1 Singleton Heights Public School N e w s l e tt e r Te r m 1 Week 10 R E S P E C T 5 April 2018 R E S P O N S I B I L I T Y E X C E L L E N C E Principal s Report Thank you for a wonderful day last Thursday, during our annual Easter Hat Parade. The student and family creativity was just amazing, the student performances were very special and not many people criticised my hat design!! Win, win, win It was also great to see our 3-6 students engage so well in the parade. It was very special to see our Year 6 students walking around with our Kinder students, as great buddies. Congratulations to the winners of the Easter Raffle. Thank you to the P&C members, and our CLO for your efforts in creating the wonderful gift basket prizes. 2 With a shortened week this week, and last, it is now time to start winding down as we approach the April holiday break. This is normally a very exciting time, however, I have some very sad, but important news to announce and it is with regret that I have to publish this so close to the end of the term. Our community is very resilient, however, it will be a big loss for us to lose two teachers at the end of this term. Miss Jessica Allan, 1A classroom teacher, has received a permanent teaching position in a school well outside the Singleton community. She will be relocating over the school holidays and start in her new position at the beginning of Term 2. Miss Allan will be missed greatly by the students in 1A, as well as students she has had the opportunity to engage with across the school. I would like to thank Miss Allan for the enthusiasm for learning that she has created in the 1A classroom, as well as her energy and creativity in working in our school community. Good luck to her in her new endeavours. Mr Lynch will also be leaving us at the end of the term, as he has decided to pursue other interests in education. Mr Lynch has been an integral part of our school community, with his innovation and energy to engage students in his classroom and across the school. The students in 6L will sorely miss him. I wish him all the best in his future endeavours. Both of these classroom teacher positions are temporary engagements, so will be staffed by the end of term, a decision that will be made by the school executive team. The new teachers will be communicated to students and families as soon as the school executive team have made that decision. I apologise for this inconvenience to your child s education, but we hope that their new teachers will continue to create positive educational experiences for your child. If you have any concerns about these changes for your child, please contact the school to arrange an appointment with me. 2

3 ANZAC SERVICES The Hunter Combined schools Anzac Service will again be held at the Singleton Civic Centre, on Thursday, 12 th April. The school has been invited to attend, with students from Years 3 to 6, who represented their class as an SRC member, as well as our school captains and vice captains. Our school choir will also be going along to the event, to perform in the civic centre foyer for guests on arrival. Notes for these students will be sent home by the end of this week. Our school Anzac service will be held on Friday, 13 th April, from 12:30pm. Our students from defence families will have some roles to play in this ceremony. A note will also be sent home for students to participate in the Singleton community Anzac March, on Wednesday, 25 th April. Students will be able to meet staff at Bailey Park at 10.15am. Uniform Shop The P&C will be closing the Uniform Shop next week to allow them time to pack up stock ready to move in time for the maintenance being conducted during the holidays. The last chance to purchase uniforms this term will be tomorrow morning from am. PBL Rewards day All students who have had 0-2 referrals to consequence room in Term 1 will be able to participate in our PBL rewards day next Wednesday, 11 th April. Most classes will begin the rewards day after recess, with a number of activities being offered to students in their stage groups. This is a great way to reward the students who continue to follow our school values of Respect, Responsibility and Excellence. Our School PBL team meets every three weeks and has representation from staff and community, as well as two of our class SRC reps in Chloe Collinson and Logan Elliott. It was great to see these students engage in their first meeting last week. We hope that their student voice creates further momentum in our school PBL process. Coles Sports for Schools Program The Coles Sports for Schools Program is now finished. Teacher Professional Learning Our staff development day next term will be focusing on teaching Writing through a Seven Steps process, as well as engagement in technology platforms for students. This will be held on Monday, 30 th April. Students will return to school on Tuesday, 1 st May. 4 COMPETITION Due: Wednesday 9 th May to Mrs Barwick or Mrs Vern K-2: ANZAC Colouring-in page See back of newsletter - more copies available from Mrs Barwick or Mrs Vern. 3-6: ANZAC inspired artwork P Create your artwork on paper or cardboard. P Use any combination of materials or techniques: pen, pencil, collage, paint, pastel etc. P Be original and creative. P Include your name and class on the artwork. Please see Mrs Barwick or Mrs Vern with any questions or queries. This year s ANZAC competition will be school based. Please note that the Singleton Diggers are not holding their regular writing competition this year and hope to return with a new competition next year. 4

5 Easter has been done and dusted, lots of chocolate has been taste tested, next comes the holidays. Before that can happen, we have a fair amount of work to get through. Last day of term On the last day of term, we have been asked to pack up our canteen and store all our food items and equipment in the hall. This project cannot be done prior due to the hall being utilised on Thursdays. We can start to pack boxes prior but moving them will be Friday 13/4/2018. Anyone who can help with this project on Friday 13/4/2018 please contact the canteen but remember that you need a working with children s check number and lots of hands means really light work. Because of this project, we will be holding a left over menu on Friday 13/4/2018. Flexischools will be cancelled on this day. Only over the counter orders will be accepted. This way if we do run out of a particular food item, we can discuss the students second choice with them. A menu will be sent out shortly. Term 1 has been an awesome term. In fact, I would go further and say the best I have had in all my years working in this industry (which is many). Our volunteers are amazing people. They just pop in to help in any way with the canteen or breakfast club. There is no way this area of the school would run as smoothly as it does without the help and support that these people freely give. A big thank you goes to all these parents and grandparents not only from myself but also our committee. Our canteen is a happy stress free environment which we have all worked towards achieving, it is a lovely place to work and laugh. Please join us if you have anytime available. Breakfast Club Not everyone who commits to volunteering at breakfast club can do it every time which is why we need more volunteers. At 8am we start setting up tables in the back hall area whilst inside the canteen, food items are being prepared. Students arrive at 8.30am and are served breakfast until 8.50am. Then comes the cleaning and packing up the tables. In all 8am to 9.30am on Tuesdays and Thursdays are the times that we are asking for. If you can do these times, please contact the canteen.
