Team Gippsland Regional Winners WNPS students win Lions Club Junior Public Speaking Competition both Year 3/4 level and Year 5/6 level Principal s Report THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF SUPERSTAN Students from Years Five and Six put on two truly wonderful performances on Thursday 14th September. The children confidently danced, sang and acted throughout the musical of The Amazing Adventures of Superstan. They provided us with great entertainment and the audience chuckled and laughed throughout the performance. Well done to the students for persisting through rehearsals, they worked as a team and the fun they had performing as a group together on stage was obvious. The backstage crew did an excellent job behind the scenes and without them the show could not have gone on. A big thank you to Mrs Sue Legg, the director, co-ordinator and choreographer, Mrs Lisa Pyle, the assistant co-ordinator, Mrs Pam Vickerman, the stage manager and assistant, Ms Caroline Allen, the sound desk and assistant and Ms Jo Draisma, the set and prop construction and designer, for your efforts and dedication to ensuring The Adventures of Superstan was a fantastic production. 3 3 WNPS STUDENTS WIN BOTH SECTIONS OF THE LIONS JUNIOR PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION The dinner meeting held by the Lions Club of Warragul on Wednesday evening the 13th September was attended by students involved in the competition, family supporters and school representatives. Warragul North Primary School was represented by Jayla (3/4PL), Summer (4/5T), Acacia (5BA) and Keira (5/6P). All participants spoke on their particular topic with great expertise. Both the Year 3/4 section and 5/6 section were won by WNPS students, Jayla and Keira. The parents and school representative were thrilled and excited that our government school students had won. Top effort Jayla and Keira! Jayla, Keira, Summer and Acacia can be justly proud of their achievements as our girls spoke with confidence, excellent expression, tone and volume variation and had thoroughly researched their topics. Jayla and Summer Acacia and Keira YEAR THREE CAMP This morning the Year Three children headed to Phillip Island for their first school camp. The Phillip Island camp is a great educational experience for the children and is filled with many fun learning experiences related to nature and the environment. Best wishes to all attending the camp and we look forward to hearing all about your adventure when you return. OCTOBER WALK TO SCHOOL MONTH Warragul North Primary School has been chosen by the Baw Baw Shire and West Gippsland Healthcare Group to be part of the 2017 Walk to School campaign. They have developed four safe walking routes with specified start and end points. The aim is for children to recognise the paths and use them to get to school, rather than being dropped off at the school gate. The four colour coded walking routes are pictured in this newsletter. During the first week of Term Four a pamphlet will be distributed to families of Warragul North Primary School with the designated walking routes clearly mapped. The school will also be eligible to be awarded vouchers if our proportion of children participating across the month of October is the highest in the shire. Thank you to the Baw Baw Shire Council and the West Gippsland Healthcare Group for selecting Warragul North Primary School to be part of the Walk to School campaign. Please support the campaign and help develop the healthy habit of walking daily in our children. Representatives from the Baw Baw Shire and the West Gippsland Healthcare Group will attend our school assembly on Friday 13th October to discuss October Walk to School Month and remind children to walk to school using the routes on Monday 16th October. Representatives will also be at each walking route s starting point on Monday 16th October to launch our Walk to School campaign. They will walk with the students departing each starting point at 8.30am. The representatives would welcome any parents that would like to join them. Corinne Collins Principal

6 6 Chesterfield Farm Student reflections... I milked a cow. I held a bunny. It was cool! I slept on the bus on the way back to school. It was excellent! By Mitchell (0HE) I saw the sheep running away from the sheep dog. The sheep followed the rules and the sheep went in to the cage to get shorn. The man pulled the sheep in to the stadium to shear the sheep. By Logan (0PC) I went to Chesterfield Farm. I liked it there because of the sheep dog. I liked the man shearing the sheep. Also I liked seeing the cow being milked. The tractor ride was fun and I sat at the front. The day was fun and interesting. By Kaiden (0ME) Excursion On Monday 11th September the Foundation students donned their gumboots and boarded the bus to Chesterfield Farm. They were greeted by sheep, cows, pigs and chickens and saw a huge range of different farm animals. Highlights of the day included a tractor ride around the farm, milking a cow, and watching a sheepdog and the shearing presentation. The Foundation students were able to feed the farm animals and cuddle the baby animals in the nursery while learning about why we have farms. Even though the sun wasn t shining, all the children had a fantastic day at the farm! Miss Georgia Carter Education Support Staff On Monday I went to Chesterfield Farm. I saw a rabbit at the farm. It was fun. I liked the farm. By Elizabeth (0HE) I heard the ostrich running on the grass. I heard the horse neigh. I felt the horse, it was warm. I smelt the mud, it was wet. I felt excited! By Charlotte (0PC) On Monday I went on a tractor and I also milked a big cow. I went on a tractor again. I liked the tractor ride and I liked the farm. By Jake (0HE) I saw baby rabbits that were so cute. They felt fluffy. I saw so many animals. I went on the tractor. I saw ponies and ducks. I patted the animals. I saw lots and lots of horses. 8 8 University of N.S.W Warragul North Primary School is committed to providing opportunities for all students to be challenged and extended in their learning. In 2017, students in Years Three to Six have the opportunity to compete in the highly regarded ICAS (International Competitions and Assessments for Schools) competitions through the University of New South Wales. 9 TOURNAMENT OF MINDS Final Report 9 Warragul North Primary School s Tournament of Minds journey came to an end on Sunday 10th September at the State Finals at La Trobe University in Bundoora. The Social Science team ably represented the school. However, the best solution on the day, combined with their Spontaneous score, was achieved by Yarraville West Primary School, whose solution to the three-hour challenge was based on the amazing collective general knowledge of the group and their ability to blend their understanding of several historical figures into the solution to the challenge, which started with A tree has fallen in a forest!. All Social Science teams were required to explore two alternative pathways via making decisions that led to two scenarios, each having a different impact on society and leading back to the starting event (the fallen tree). The team members had to rely on their own interpretation of the challenge, organise their solutions as a performance to a maximum of ten minutes, as well as make props and costumes from limited materials, all without adult facilitation and within a three-hour time limit. In addition, teams had to solve a Spontaneous problem involving four minutes of brainstorming, analysing, evaluating their ideas and deciding on their most ingenious and creative responses. They then had to convey their ideas to the judges in a timeframe of one minute. Our team consisting of Ruby (6BR), Trinidy (6BR), Tiana (6KI), Haley (5BA), Ashlyn (4/5T), Summer (4/5T) and Lewis (4MA) worked cooperatively and creatively. The school is very proud of the team s achievement in winning the Regional Finals in August and representing Gippsland at the State Finals. Now we can look forward to the academic and social challenges for committed, talented and creative students (Years Three to Six) that Tournament of Minds will bring in 2018! YEAR 3 AND 5 NAPLAN INDIVIDUAL STUDENT REPORTS AVAILABLE During May students in Years Three and Five participated in the nationwide National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). Your child s individual NAPLAN results are available for collection from the school office. Parents of children in Year Five are reminded that secondary schools may request a copy of your child s Year Five NAPLAN results. It is suggested that you file these results in a safe place for future use. An administration fee will be charged if another copy of your child s NAPLAN results is requested FOUNDATION (PREP) ENROLMENTS Enrolment forms are available from the school office for families wishing to enrol a child for 2018 in Foundation (Prep). Please enrol siblings as soon as possible to ensure all children are included in the orientation program which will commence early in Term Four, and to assist with class planning for END OF TERM ARRANGEMENTS The last day of school for Term Three is Friday 22nd September and school will finish at 2.30pm. Buses will depart just after 2.30pm. The first day of school for Term Four is Monday 9th October. You will have noticed that your school account has the inclusion of a $30.00 contribution for your family s copy of our school magazine For the Record. For the Record is a fantastic record of school events; has photographs of every child at the school on photo day ; a list of every child attending Warragul North Primary School just prior to the printing of the magazine and an item from every student attending the school on For the Record submission day. Should you wish to receive a copy or copies of the school magazine, then the cost must be paid by FRIDAY 22ND SEPTEMBER. Only those families who have paid for the magazine by this deadline will receive a copy. No extra copies will be printed beyond those paid for and ordered. MELBOURNE ZOO EXCURSION The Year One and Two children are very excited about their upcoming excursion to the Melbourne Zoo. The excursion will take place over two days as follows: TUESDAY 17TH OCTOBER 1/2M / 2HU / 2JH / 2TB / 2VR WEDNESDAY 18TH OCTOBER 1BO / 1DE / 1ME / 1SP Please make sure your child s permission form and payment has been returned by the due date of Friday 22nd September (the last day of this term).

13 13 SUNSMART TERM THREE SOIREE Parents are reminded that Warragul North Primary School sunsmart hats are a compulsory part of our school uniform in terms one and four. Children not wearing a Warragul North Primary School sunsmart hat will need to play in the undercover area. Thank you! TERM FOUR UNIFORM REMINDER Children need to be in either summer or winter uniform, not a combination of both e.g. summer dress over pants or leggings. (Please note that leggings are not part of our uniform.) As children wear out or grow out of their school shoes the replacement shoes need to be plain black. A copy of the uniform dress code is available from the school office. Our uniform is available for purchase from Beleza in Williams Square, Warragul. ARE YOU MOVING? If you plan on leaving Warragul North Primary School at the end of 2017, it would be appreciated if you could notify the school office as soon as possible. This will assist us with our class planning for 2018 and also enable us to forward a transfer note to your children s new school. Thanks! SINGING LESSONS As part of the private instrumental music program at Warragul North Primary School, singing lessons are available with singing teacher, Sam Stephens. If you are interested in your child having singing lessons please complete a Request for Lessons form at the school office. A great night was had by all at our soirée on Thursday 7th September with nearly forty children performing on a variety of instruments and in a diverse range of styles. Our rock bands took part to great applause as well as a number of individuals and duets. For several children this was their first real performance in front of an audience, which is why we like to provide this opportunity at Warragul North Primary School. It is an ideal setting for a debut with the audience comprising of family and friends who are always very encouraging and supportive. It is also wonderful to see how the children progress from year to year as they develop their skills. Thank you to everyone who was involved with such a successful and enjoyable evening. Mrs Jill Binks Performing Arts Co-ordinator OUTSIDE SCHOOL HOURS CARE This week at Outside School Hours Care our theme has been the circus. The children had circus colourings to do and circus clowns to make. Other activities included creating clown hats and watching the movie Madagascar 3. Due to the weather being so cold and wet we have spent time playing games in the gym during After School Care sessions. OSHC is available on a permanent or casual basis. Enrolment forms are available from the school office or from OSHC. A waiting list is held if a session is already fully booked. It is important that the school office or OSHC is notified if your child is not going to attend a session they have been booked in for as that place can then be used for a casual booking. 14 14 Book Week Poster Competion As part of the Book Week celebrations at Warragul North Primary School, our Parent Club held a poster competition. It was fantastic to receive so many entries from all year levels across the school. After much deliberation the winners were announced at the senior assembly on Friday 8th September. Each winner was presented with a certificate and a $20.00 book voucher. The winners were: Pictured are the very talented winners of the Book Week poster competition. 15 15 Art Room News from the Monster Mayhem! Monster Mayhem struck Warragul North Primary School last week! One-eyed monsters (and other crazy creatures) infiltrated our school. It s all part of the soft sculpture theme being explored in art this term. Thanks to rich imaginations and the sewing skills of our senior students, we have some amazing monster cushions on display. The students began this project by designing Monsters and then painting these creations onto fabric. Next elements of the monster faces were enhanced with sewing and finally the creatures were stuffed and stitched up. Our next activity is 3D paper birds so be prepared for some more brilliant creations in the not too distant future. 16 16 Year Two Sleepover On Friday 8th September eighty very excited children set up camp in the BER building for the Year Two sleepover. After some construction and science activities, the children had a dance party in the gym followed by dinner before snuggling into their sleeping bags to watch Flubber. After a long night, the children had breakfast before packing up their beds and heading home for a mid-morning nap. I m sure all children had a wonderful time and are looking forward to the Year Three camp next year! Miss Georgia Carter Education Support Staff Student reflections From 2HU... 18 18 School Council Report My name is Brett Kersten and this is my fourth year on School Council as the Buildings and Grounds Convenor. I have two children at Warragul North Primary School. Ben who is in Year Five, and Claire in Year Three. It gives me much pleasure in being actively involved at the school where my children attend, and I take much pride in watching them blossom academically, socially, as well as in their selfesteem and confidence. As the Buildings and Grounds Convenor, my role is not just the monitoring of the buildings and grounds within the school boundaries, but also extends to monitoring the maintenance of the footpaths, nature strips, drainage and roads around the school. On Wednesday the 13th of September 2017, a meeting was convened at Warragul North Primary School with representatives of the Baw Baw Shire. Scott Sibley, Team Leader, Infrastructure, Planning and Growth. Haunu Suan, Senior Engineer, Infrastructure, Traffic and Road Safety and Sai Tavate, Project Engineer, Sub-Divisions, Footpaths. Also present was our school Principal Corinne Collins, Business Manager Stuart Konstanty and myself. This meeting was convened to discuss footpaths around the school, the application for an additional school crossing on Princess Street, and the need for a pedestrian crossing on Normanby Street. Also discussed was the hard surfaces along Princess Street between the footpaths and the roadside curb, and the uneven gap and drop between the footpath and curb along the staff car park running parallel to marble alley. Also discussed was the need for a Safe Traffic Plan and strategy around the school during student drop off and pick up times. This is due to the continued growth of the school and the amount of traffic congestion around the school at these times. The members of the Baw Baw Shire team were both professional and supportive to our school concerns and needs as discussed. As a result of this meeting, a request for a supervised school crossing has been submitted to the compliance committee for Princess Street, midway between Edinburgh Street and O Dowds Road. A pedestrian crossing has been requested for Normanby Street, between O Dowds Road and Stoddarts Road. A hard, concrete based surface has been offered by the Baw Baw Shire along the school side of the road and to run the length of the school on Princess Street between the footpath and the curb. A hard surface has also been arranged between the footpath and curb along the length of marble alley in the future. Footpaths are to be extended and completed along Princess Street, as well as Edinburgh, Dundee and O Dowds Road s, running all the way to Normanby Road. These works will take place, and are expected to be completed during the coming school holiday break so as to not interfere with the smooth running of the school. It is thought that the proposed footpaths and extensions will have a positive impact on the traffic congestion around the school during peak times. These footpaths will allow for parents to park further away from the school and allow for a safe and comfortable walk for the short distance to the school. A timely reminder to all parents driving to the school to drop-off or pick-up children. To be mindful of their driving when around the school so as not to endanger our children, after all, our children are our most precious people in our lives, and it is our responsibility, and duty to protect them. At all times driving carefully, remaining patient and courteous. Parents may consider arriving ten minutes after the peak pick-up time to also relieve traffic congestion. Finally, I would like to invite members of our school community to attend our next Buildings and Grounds Sub-Committee meeting, to be held on Tuesday 10th October These sub-committee meetings are not exclusive to School Council members, but are open to members of our school community who would like to raise any concerns in relation to the buildings and grounds of the school for discussion. Any parent who would like to join the Buildings and Grounds Sub- Committee is very welcome. If you have a concern, and are unable to attend a sub-committee meeting, the please leave your request at the school office and I will raise it for discussion at our next meeting. She took her first report of cyberbullying in 1994 and since then she has conducted extensive research and has completed advanced training in this area in both the USA and UK and is a sought after presenter and advisor to Schools, elite sporting bodies such as the AFL, GP s, and both State and Federal Governments. She has authored resources for the Victorian DET, writes and reviews school Policy, provides crisis management/advice to schools and is afforded expert status on the Safer Internet Programme Data Base. She is also a member of the Australian Government's Cybersafety working group and a published author. Her book 'Sext's Texts & Selfies', is the definitive parents' guide to helping their children stay safe online.
