While on tour the students learnt about Australia s history, culture, heritage and democracy. Students visited the Museum of Australian Democracy at old Parliament House, Electoral Education Centre, National Museum of Australia, Australian Institute of Sport, National Capital Exhibition at Regatta Point, Parliament House of Australia, Mount Ainslie Lookout, Australian War Memorial, National Gallery of Australia, Royal Australian Mint, Questacon - The National Science and Technology Centre and Telstra Tower. No doubt they all slept well each night after such busy days! 2 2 Principal s Report continued Year Six Canberra Tour continued I would like to acknowledge the commitment of the Year Six teachers, Miss Cummings, Mrs Brentwood and Mr Prokopiwskyi who accompanied the children on the five day Canberra tour. Also a big thank you to Mrs Purcell who offered to go to Canberra in place of Mrs Kingsley who then stepped into Mrs Purcell s Foundation class. Their dedication to their students is most appreciated. I also acknowledge and thank the parent volunteers, Mark Faith, Danny Gorman, Karen Boardman and Justin Brook, who gave up their time to take part in the trip to assist the teachers and students. I hope you enjoy viewing the photos from the Canberra tour. The Year Six teachers returned elated with the behaviour and good manners of our students. Well done Years Sixers! Buildings and Grounds Sub-Committee The Buildings and Grounds Sub-Committee of School Council meets twice each term to discuss any issues relating to the school s buildings and grounds. The sub-committee plans and co-ordinates each term s working bee. The definition of numeracy states that a numerate person should understand the ways mathematics can be used for communication, and this requires the possession of two attributes 1. being at-ease with all those aspects of mathematics that enable a person to cope with the practical demands of everyday life. 2. the ability to understand information presented in mathematical terms. Students become numerate as they develop the knowledge and skills to use mathematics confidently at school and in their daily lives. Numeracy involves students recognising and understanding the role of mathematics in the world and having the dispositions and capacities to use mathematical knowledge and skills purposefully. In a nutshell Numeracy means the ability to use mathematical knowledge in a range of situations. GETTING ALONG - Year Three Riley (3BC) LITERACY - Year Four Lahni (4MA) ENGAGEMENT - Year Five Tyler (4/5T) ACHIEVEMENT - Year Six Ella (6BR) School Values medals were awarded at assembly on Friday 19th May to Jordyn (from 21st April), Ella, Lahni, Riley and Tyler. Congratulations!

4 4 Year 6 Canberra Tour The Australian Government recognised the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the National Capital as part of their civics and citizenship education. To assist parents in meeting the cost of the tour, the Australian Government contributes funding under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (P.A.C.E.R.) programme toward the travel expenses incurred. This contribution will be paid directly to the school now the tour has been completed. We would like to thank the Australian Government for their support of this program and we trust that the tour was a rewarding experience for our Year Six students. Wall of Fame Every week in Physical Education one student from the Junior (Years 1/2), Middle (Years 3/4) and Senior (Years 5/6) school is rewarded with being named the P.E Wall of Fame champion for that week. Term Two - Week 4 Champions The P.E Wall of Fame champion is a student who has shown great determination, effort, encouragement, sportsmanship and resilience during their Physical Education class. The National Gallery of Victoria is presenting Van Gogh and the Seasons exhibition exclusive to Melbourne until 9th July, Inspired by the Van Gogh exhibition the Year Three and Four students have explored landscapes, adding trees that show their understanding of creating perspective in art. 8 8 FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE INFORMATION FOR PARENTS Every Victorian child should have access to the world of learning opportunities that exist beyond the classroom. The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund helps ensure that no student will miss out on the opportunity to join their classmates for important, educational and fun activities. It is part of making Victoria the Education State and the Government s commitment to breaking the link between a student s background and their outcomes. CAMPS, SPORTS & EXCURSIONS FUND (CSEF) School camps provide children with inspiring experiences in the great outdoors, excursions encourage a deeper understanding of how the world works and sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership. All are part of a healthy curriculum. CSEF will be provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities. HOW TO APPLY Contact the school office to obtain a CSEF application form or download from MORE INFORMATION For the CSEF application closing dates and more information about the fund visit If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child. The annual CSEF amount per student is: $125 for primary school students $225 for secondary school students. 1

9 9 Hello from the Acorn Room Mighty oaks from little acorns grow What a privilege it is to work with young people. People who, like little acorns, are only small at the moment, but have such potential for immense growth. With the right conditions, good soil, sunlight and water, the acorn grows into a one of the most magnificent trees, the oak tree. It is my hope that the children of this school find themselves in that optimal growth environment too. That their unique gifts and abilities might be nurtured and grown in them such that they can be their best, unique selves. But life brings seasons. Life is not just sunshine and happy times. There are times of sadness, of struggle, of pain. Such seasons don t last forever, but need to be journeyed through from time to time. The Acorn Room is a place where children can be supported in their journey if needed. These occasions are great opportunities for our students to showcase their musical talents. Soirées (music recitals) are a regular event at the school and both teachers and children alike look forward to the evening, where families and friends make up the audience. We encourage all the children who take part in private lessons at school, to present an item at a soirée during the year. For some children it will be their first real performance. If you are interested in your child being part of the Private Performing Arts program in 2017 I would like to invite you to our first soirée for the year on Thursday 8th June in the BER Building (Prep Learning Centre) at Warragul North Primary School from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. This is a great opportunity for you to see how the program works while being entertained by our current students. The teachers will also be happy to have a quick chat with you afterwards. ROCKFEST (BATTLE OF THE BANDS) Loud music, guitars, drums, amplifiers and excited students are the order of the day when three Rock Bands from Warragul North Primary School take part in the Gippsland heat of Rockfest formerly known as Battle of the Bands, at Trafalgar Primary School on Wednesday, 31st May, Two of the bands performed at our senior assembly last Friday to an enthusiastic audience. Senior students from Year 4 6 make up the bands, The Rainbow Penguins, Hightide and Chamomile Tea. This is a great experience for our students and for most children it will be an extension of their Private Performing Arts lessons. If our bands are successful they will go on to compete in the next heat in August. Mrs Jill Binks Performing Arts Co-ordinator

11 11 OUTSIDE SCHOOL HOURS CARE Activities at OSHC have continued to focus on allowing the children to use their imaginations with box construction and projects using the craft materials. Lego and Mobilo construction has been enjoyed by some while others have fun playing charades. The regular activities of computer games, the Wii and sometimes a DVD keep all busy. Ashlee has brought her little Jack Russell puppy in some afternoons which delights a lot of the children. Friday the 19th May was Walk Safely to School Day and it was great to see so many Warragul North families walking to school. All children who walked to school received a sticker. OSHC is available on a permanent or casual basis. Enrolment forms are available from the school office or from OSHC. A waiting list is held if a session is already fully booked. It is important that the school office or OSHC is notified if your child is not going to attend a session they have been booked in for as that place can then be used for a casual booking. Once you have a permanent booking you will be billed for that placement whether your child attends or not. 12 12 Division Athletics On Tuesday 16th May, 37 students from Warragul North competed at the Division Athletics that were held at the very sunny Joe Carmody Track in Newborough. It was fantastic to see that Warragul North had one of the largest contingents of students being represented. Through great skill, effort and athleticism we were lucky enough to win many ribbons throughout the day in a wide range of events from 1500m to discus. To cap off a great day, all our 12/13 age group relay teams finished off strong to finish first in their respective race. The students who came home with a well-deserved ribbon will now look forward to competing in the Regional Athletics at the beginning of Term Four. Mr Callan Fisher Physical Education Teacher
