1 SENIOR PREP Edition: March 2017 Weekly Newsletter of St Peter s Boys Prep School FROM THE RECTOR Academic success Our 2011 leaver group did us proud in the matriculation exams, garnering a total of 125 distinctions. In the following configuration: 1 distinction 17 boys 2 distinctions 2 boys 3 distinctions 5 boys 4 distinctions 3 boys 5 distinctions 7 boys 6 distinctions 2 boys 7 distinctions 2 boys 8 distinctions 2 boys We are especially delighted with their results given that it has never been school policy to select boys only on academic ability at entry. We do not need for our Old Boys and Girls to become famous public figures. Our only hope for each child that passes through our school is that, as adults, they are contributing citizens, wonderful parents and the best that they can be in any career they choose, hopefully bettering the lives of those around them. Our first crop of girl leavers matriculates this year. I have no doubt they will do us equally proud! Questions for the Rector: If anyone wishes any further information on any topic, please feel free to contact me at school or at (dradloff@stpeters.co.za) Greg Royce FROM THE HEADMASTER Yesterday was Ash Wednesday. This day marks the beginning of Lent in the Anglican Church Year. Lent lasts for 46 days in the lead up to Easter Day, when we celebrate the rising of Jesus Christ from the tomb after His crucifixion. During Lent we typically try to give up something we enjoy doing and/or take up a practice that will help us to reflect on our Christian life. Sundays during Lent are regarded as mini-easters and we are free from these undertakings on these days. Thus, the actual number of Lenten days is 40. Father Richard s sermon yesterday reflected on the similarity of the ashes after a fynbos fire, which is essential for some of the plant seeds to germinate and begin new life, and the Lenten ashes. During this time we are prepared for a fresh, new Christian life after the festival of Easter. Please discuss this concept with your sons if they mention yesterday s service. I am sure that Father Richard will be happy to answer any questions you may have on the Easter Season. He can be contacted on fatherrichard@stpeters.co.za. This has been a busy week for the school and we have been happy to welcome visitors from the International School of Lusaka, who came to observe our educational practices and share their knowledge with our staff. 2 addition, we are hosting the Anglican Board of Education of Southern African Schools conference on Thursday and Friday. These links with other African schools form an important aspect of the St Peter s growth mindset strategic imperative and we find that we always come away richer from our interaction. I wish the St Peter s community a meaningful time of Lent and a happy week ahead. Rob Macaulay INTER-HOUSE CHAMPIONSHIP GALAS The Intermediate and Senior Inter-House championship galas will take place on Friday, 10 March. Boys are to wear: house shirt, blue shorts and slops or white socks and white takkies to school. Grade 3s and 4s will have a normal academic day until 10:00. Intermediate Gala (U9 s and U10 s) 11:00 to 12:30 boys may then go home. Grades 5, 6 and 7 will have a normal academic day until 12:30. Senior Gala (U11 s, U12 s and Opens) 13:30 to 15:30 boys may then go home. Pupils may not leave until the end of the prize giving for their gala. Pupils are required to wear either a plain black speedo costume or the school team costume. Please ensure that your son has the correct costume. Requests for permission to be excused from swimming in and/or attending the gala should have been received by the relevant Housemaster by Friday, 17 February. 3 YEAR OR THE WOMAN Prof. Carol-Ann Benn addressed the parents on breast cancer in the Royce Hall last week. This was an informative talk focusing on screening, early detection, treatment and living with cancer. She encouraged conversation with our girls, family members, nannies, domestics and work mates. Mammograms and regular checks are important. Medical aid members should make their annual visits to hospitals of their choice. Helen Joseph Hospital does not turn away non-medical aid members. The Year of the Woman (YOW) steering committee thanks Colleen Hayward-Butt for arranging the talk that left us positive and hopeful! MAKE-UP REQUIRED It is Staff Variety Show time and we want to look fabulous for you! If any parents have make-up that they do not use or have a connection to a make-up house for discounted goods, please could you donate or contact Sister Gail Brent. Boys can deliver any donations to her. LATEST EDITION OF AWSUM NEWSPAPER We are on page 6: primary_-_hi 2016 SCHOOL MAGAZINE Your son should have brought home a School Magazine. The cost is R165 and will be debited to your account. If you do not want the magazine, please return it to either Boys SP or JP Reception areas by tomorrow Friday 03 March, together with a slip of paper with your son s full name and class.
