2 DISTRICT NEWS #newpalproud MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT KEEP SHARING CLASSROOM NEWS! We are off to a wonderful start around the district. I am thrilled at the instruction I am seeing in all of the classrooms. It is fun to look at the #newpalproud hashtag and see the neat things our students are doing daily in their classes. To kick-off this school year, we are asking all of our staff, students, family members and community members to tag their school news to #newpalproud. This is a great place to share the innovative learning and high-level instruction happening in our district. We have much to be proud of at Southern Hancock Schools. We have a story to tell. Let's tell it. Southern Hancock Schools is the heart of the community. As the fall sports season begins, the community will rally around our sports teams. Many of you have seen the "8 Seconds: Settle Your Score" banners throughout the community. We are proud that our football team has been selected to be a part of the Russell Athletic National Advertising Campaign. 3 NPHS NEWS W R I T T E N B Y A L C O O P E R, A T H L E T I C D I R E C T O R R U S S E L L A T H L E T I C A N D N P F O O T B A L L J O I N R A N K S 8/17 District New Teacher Meeting NPHS, 4 5:30 p.m. 8/19 Football vs. Whiteland Lucas Oil Stadium, 8 p.m. 8/24 Teacher PLC Meeting Cafeteria, 2:30 p.m. Heartbreak often turns into motivation and commitment, and Russell Athletic has chosen New Palestine Football as it's national campaign program to encourage NPHS to "settle the score" from last year's lost in the 5A State championship game. "8 Seconds" haunts and motivates this year's Dragon Football team to achieve new heights and with the help of Russell Athletic, this year's edition of Dragon Football will write a new story of football tradition at NPHS. We hope you will catch the action as the 2016 season begins where 2015 ended in the season opener at Lucas Oil Stadium against sectional rival Whiteland at 8 p.m. next Friday, August 19th. T E A C H E R D C M S R A C E T O R I O With the summer Olympic games kicking off last Friday, athletes from the United States have begun to collect some medals with world class performances. Watching the different sporting events at home has been an exciting topic of discussion for students and teachers, but Doe Creek's PE students are attempting to set some records of their own. The seventh and eighth graders and their families have been challenged by Doe Creek staff and families in running, jogging, or biking the 5,125 miles to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The goal is to make it there before the games Closing Ceremony on Sunday, August 21, The challenge was introduced to parents at Back to School night during the first week of school, and students took to the track the day the games opened, logging nearly two miles per student. Brice Thompson, an eighth grade soccer player, went above and beyond the required mileage in class and completed ten track laps in one period. When asked about his motivation for the Race to Rio, he said, "It is fun to challenge and push yourself to the maximum." Using a link on the school website, participants are recording miles completed inside and outside of class using a Google form. Once data is collected online, race updates are announced and posted periodically. Several classroom teachers in Language Arts and other subject areas have joined in by researching the host city and discussing current events in the Olympics. The event ties in nicely with the Indiana Academic Standards for Physical Education which state that students should achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness and exhibit a physically active lifestyle. Eighth grader Brett Wilcher asked if the class could do this more often. She explained, "Focusing on fitness helps with extracurricular activities like sports and color guard." In addition to workouts on the track, students engage in fitness circuit training every week and are learning to figure their target heart rate and work in their optimal training zone to improve cardiovascular endurance. Mahren Lindsay, an eighth grader made a connection to how this training could help outside of class. She observed, "Circuit stations help build strength and confidence which I need in dance." Whether DCMS staff, students, and families reach Rio collectively as a school or individually as a team, for many, the event has certainly added enjoyment to the Olympic experience. 5 NPE NEWS W R I T T E N B Y K A T Y E A S T E S, P R I N C I P A L S T E M A T N P E Many teachers at NPE are exploring STEM with students. This integration of science, technology, engineering, and math is keeping our young scientists engaged in collaborative learning. These students in Mrs. Mitchell s class celebrate as they meet the goal of their STEM lab! New Staff Feature Laura Mitchell is a graduate from Hanover College and a member of our New Palestine community. Two of her children have already graduated from NPHS and her youngest daughter is currently a junior. Mrs. Mitchell began her teaching career in the 5th grade at Amy Beverland Elementary in Lawrence Township. She taught 5th grade for two years at New Palestine Elementary and has spent the last 6 years teaching 4th grade Math/Science/Social Studies in Beech Grove. She is thrilled to be returning " home" to New Palestine Elementary to teach 5th grade again. #newpalproud WEEKLY CALENDAR 8/15 School Picture Day W E E K L Y N E W S 4

6 BWE NEWS WRITTEN BY MARK KERN, PRINCIPAL BULLDOG NEWS 8/10 8/26 PTO Fundraiser 8/17 Fall Picture Day Parent Meetings were the highlight of the week at Brandywine. On Monday evening, parents of students in grades 4-5-6, met with teachers for about 30 minutes. An overview of expectations, practices, and other useful information was provided. On Tuesday evening, the process was repeated for grades K We had a great parent response each evening! Hats off to our Bulldog teachers for putting the extra time to ensure success for each student! Professional Learning Community work kicked off on Wednesday of this week. Following a review of the PLC process, the teachers broke off into their teams to work on a set of common norms for the PLC work. Teachers also identified the dates for the first round of common assessments in the area of English/Language Arts. Over the next few weeks, teachers will bring samples of student work at all levels for a team review and analysis. This collaborative project about student work will be the first steps in building a stronger learning environment and student success as a result of teacher/team work on making a difference for each student! Kindergarten s first steps to success! This year s kindergarten students are building a strong foundation of learning! They have been partnering with second graders to share some great early children s literature with one another. Strategic planning skills were being grown as the boys and girls planned on how to build the tallest towers! Getting ready for writing starts with pre-writing success, as our early learners found out this week! Our youngest students are off to a great start! 7 SCE NEWS W R I T T E N B Y K A R I S H E L T O N, P R I N C I P A L T H I S W E E K A T S U G A R C R E E K Fourth Grade Annual Egg Drop Fourth grade students participated in their annual egg drop challenge. Students learned about the scientific method and developed containers to withstand a foot drop. Although not every student ended the morning with an egg cellent drop, students were eager to make improvements for future drops at home. This was also a great time for students to build relationships with other classmates and determine how to work together as a team in the new school year. Team Building in 5th Grade The first week of school, Mrs. Knoop s kiddos spent time on various collaboration activities. In one activity, students were given the challenge of stacking Solo cups without using their hands to touch the cups. Impossible you say? Not for this group of Macgyvers. They combined their wits with a rubber band and five pieces of string for a mission accomplished!
