There were 3 other schools in attendance and our students worked with them to think about and discuss issues around the needs of people in under developed countries. The students were challenged to think about ways that they can take action in their own schools to develop a strong social justice culture with in their community. We look forward to the children putting into practise what they learnt and become strong student leaders at St Michael s. Daniel Barr Parking Regulations We ask parents to adhere to parking regulations in and around the streets which surround St MIchael s School. Please remember that the area directly in front of the school in Brougham Street is a drop off zone at the beginning and end of the school day. It is not ok to park your car and come into the school. if you are parking in this area you may receive a parking fine as officers are always patrolling

3 3 Welcome Back BBQ Thank-you to all who attended our Welcome Back BBQ. It was a great chance for all to catch up and meet your child s teacher as well as our new Principal Denise. Thank-you to all who brought the delicious salads to share, the Le Do Family for helping set up, Daniel for cooking the BBQ and the staff for helping on the night. Term 1 No hat, no play, no fun today!!! All children should be wearing a hat when out in the yard.

4 4 St. Michael s Primary School OSHP Our services offer a range of supervised, age appropriate activities in a safe environment for children to have fun, learn, play and make new friends every day. Before School Care in school hall: 7.00am-8.30am. After School Care in OSHP room: 3.30pm-6.00pm (Monday to Friday) except on Wednesday: 3.00pm-6.00pm. Contact Susan Mooney or school office Our sessions are held in the OSHP (below school library). With the daily activities: games, sport, drama, painting, reading, playground Also children can choose to have quiet time or finish homework. CANTEEN REMINDER The canteen is open every Monday. Order forms are available from the office or classroom teacher. For those who would like to volunteer please contact Susan Mooney on Canteen volunteers would need to be available from 11:30am-1:40pm.

6 6 Media Statement from Bishop Vincent Long ofm conv, Australian Catholic Bishops Delegate for Refugees regarding the High Court s decision on offshore processing Following the High Court decision, the Australian Government s response to people seeking asylum, including babies born in Australia and their parents, should focus on protecting them from harm and respecting their human dignity. I urge the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Minister for Immigration Peter Dutton to show compassion and mercy towards these families and not act in a way that will cause even more harm than has been done already. The Catholic Church is prepared to collaborate with other community organisations to provide support for asylum seekers. I urge the Australian Government to ensure that no child is subject to an unsafe and harmful environment and that no-one is returned to where they may face physical, psychological and sexual violence and harm. The Catholic Church opposes mandatory detention and offshore detention because these policy responses do not respect the dignity of people seeking our help. Governments have a responsibility to manage migration flows, but the Australian Government s current approach is harsh and should change. Bishop Vincent Long is the Australian Catholic Bishops spokesman on refugees and a former refugee.
