1 From our Principal Dear Parents, Students and Friends of Cheltenham Primary School, I am delighted to announce that following the completion of a state-wide merit based selection process, Robert Ridgeway Acting Assistant Principal (Kingston Heath Primary School) has accepted the position of Assistant Principal at Cheltenham Primary School. Robert is a substantive Leading teacher at Dingley Primary School. He holds a Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Education. Robert has a passion for student engagement and has led whole school improvement in Mathematics and Digital Technologies. Robert will commence his position at the start of Term 3. We look forward to starting his transition into Cheltenham Primary School, following the provisional appointment period. Student Led Tours Foundation 2019 Our senior student leaders conducted student led tours and presentations for groups of prospective Foundation families on Wednesday. We were expecting around 20 families and well over 45 turned up! Our leaders were not fazed; they demonstrated confidence, pride, engagement and connectedness to our school which was a joy to witness. Leading up to the tours, they practiced with due diligence and overcame any natural reserve with courage. Jessica Coles Foundation Learning Leader and I received so much positive feedback about their efforts from staff, parents of the school and prospective families. Poppy and Olly our School Captains, were amazing in their leadership and support to their peers. Congratulations children, you exceeded all our expectations and we are immensely proud of you! 2 REPORTING YOUR CHILD S ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL All students are required to have their attendance recorded by the school. If your child is absent you are asked to notify the school from now on via the Konnective app via Tools & Resources. We have created a form on Konnective for parents to fill in and submit to the school. The absence should be reported via Konnective by 9am for the teacher to correctly mark the roll. If you have not added the Konnective app to your phone please contact the office and we will assist you. Hello everyone! Congratulations to Ben W 2B, Freya R 5/6C and Argentina M-J FA, for completing the Premier's Reading Challenge. Awesome reading! The registrations for the PRC have now closed. Remember that children from Foundation-Gr 2 need to read 30 books (10 of their own choice) and Gr 4 - Gr 6 need to read 15 books (5 of their own choice). 3 2018 House Cross Country On Wednesday 9 th May, the Year 3 to 6 students walked to Cheltenham Park to participate in the Annual School Cross Country Carnival, and what a fantastic afternoon it was. The 9/10 age group ran 2 kilometres and the 11, 12, 13 age group ran 3 kilometres. Everyone put in an enormous amount of effort, earning points for their house and cheering on their peers. As exhausted as they were, the students still managed to cross the finish line with smiles on their face. You should all be extremely proud of your efforts. Congratulations to the following students who were the champions on the day: 9/10 Boys: Toby P 3/4A 9/10 Girls: Milly N 3/4B 11 Boys: Gus D 5/6E 11 Girls: Mia U 5/6A 12/13 Boys: Andy G 5/6E 12/13 Girls: Tamsyn H 5/6C These students, along with the other top eight finishers from each age group, will represent Cheltenham Primary School in the Cheltenham District Cross Country Carnival which will be held on Tuesday 22 nd May. Good luck to all students involved, I know you will represent our school proudly. The House Carnival results were in 4 th place Courtney (Blue), in 3 rd place was Wilden (Yellow), in 2 nd place Cullen (Red) which means Le Page (Green) were the winners of the 2018 House Cross Country Carnival! Congratulations to all teams on their outstanding performances, with a special mention going out to Le Page House. The House Captains were nothing short of amazing during the event, having the responsibility of recording results, marking laps, handing out ribbons and photographing some fantastic moments of the afternoon. A massive thank you to all parents who assisted at the event, who were stationed around the course and on the finishing line cheering on all the children and offering support when needed. It definitely made the children feel far more confident and motivated knowing that your support was there. Another huge thank you to the staff, students and all those who came along and supported the children at the carnival, it greatly added to the success of the afternoon. 7 Lord Somers Camp (LSC) - Senior School Parent reflections It was truly a privilege to see the "behind the scenes" of camp. The few snippets of detail we get as parents when the kids return can in no way compare to what we see and get to appreciate by attending. The two things that really stuck out for me as a parent were: - The sheer joy the kids experienced at different points of time (playing foxholes! Paddle boarding, jumping into the ocean, mucking about with their teachers and camp staff (spontaneous water fights), and even simply hanging out in the cabins with their friends, free to enjoy their down time as independent little people) and -The maturity and organisational skills they showed all day, every day. The way they organised themselves for four days with little to no drama, few lost items, the way they organised their things and were always ready on time for activities, punctual for meals, even early at times, was just incredible. As a parent, we see some of this at home but to stand back and see this kind of responsibility and organisation in a new setting, over several days, and even as they started to get tired, was just so impressive. We really have a great bunch of kids, but underpinning that and making it possible, are all our warm, caring, attentive teachers that do everything they can to get the best out of the kids, and that quite clearly, are committed to understanding and developing each child in the best possible way. This warmth and care was always on display at camp and goes well beyond what we parents expect. The teachers were always doing more than what their job requires, enjoying and nurturing the children, and comforting them as needed. As parents, we can't ask for more than that. So, thank you so much for the opportunity to attend. It was a truly wonderful experience and a memorable one. I saw many great examples of friendship, resilience, respect and support for your fellow school friends. We were blessed with good weather, yummy food, an awesome camp and activities and a really cool bunch of teachers to go away with. 8 Student reflection by Ella Year 6A Sun, sand and beach...could it get any better? Well, the answer is yes. Lord Somers camp was the best! On Monday 1st of May, the year 5s and 6s said their goodbyes and headed off to camp. The camp was in Somers, an hour away and located not only next to the beach, but also a big bush area. Imagine that! The camp leaders were also really nice, there was Alex, who ran the camp, Hannah, Mia, Emily, Sunny, Josh, Rowan and Steph, who arrived on the last day. They all taught us really funny dances! There was one where we ended up looking like chickens in the end! The chefs were great too. They cooked the most excellent food and the best desserts. The activities were amazing! There was stand-up paddle boarding in the ocean, team initiatives in the bush, the Coolart visit at an old house, screen printing near the basketball court, kayaking in the river between the camp and the ocean and beach games, at the beach! After every meal, there was duty group which was based on which activity group you were in. (eg. group 1 girls or group 3 boys) Alex put on music and we danced around clearing the tables and washing the dishes. We also got a bit wet from everyone washing the dishes and spraying us with the tap or dumping water jugs over our heads. Overall, everyone who attended camp loved it and had a great time. I definitely think that the next kids who go will have just as much fun as we did. It was AWESOME!
