Founded in 1753, Fulneck is fortunate to be located in one of the most beautiful and tranquil settings in England. The School can boast the best of both worlds: a rural location, overlooking the Tong Valley, in the heart of West Yorkshire, yet just ten minutes away from the bustling and vibrant city of Leeds. Fulneck School is a very special community, committed to developing every aspect of our pupils education. We offer a nurturing environment for pupils aged 3 to 18. With 450 pupils it is large enough to offer an inspiring curriculum with excellent examination results, abundant opportunities for sport, performance and creativity, yet small enough to ensure that we know all of our pupils personally. 4 AGE 3-5 Fulneck Nursery & Reception In our Nursery and Reception Classes we create a warm and secure environment in which each child has the freedom to develop their skills and potential. We lay the firm foundations upon which all further knowledge can be based. In the Foundation Stage we have a strong commitment to parents as partners and aim to involve them in all aspects of their child s care and education. We recognise that parents significantly affect their child s achievement and we develop a climate of shared responsibility, understanding and mutual respect. We provide a broad and balanced curriculum, which takes into account individual needs. Our emphasis is on developing a child s personal, social and emotional abilities, as well as early English and Mathematical skills, all of which contribute to a child s knowledge, understanding and skills in other areas of learning. 10 AGE Sixth Form We believe that the Sixth Form years are a very special time in the lives of our young adults, when personalities can flourish and crucial decisions are made about the future. A well-qualified team of tutors working in collaboration with the Head of Sixth Form supports, monitors and encourages the personal and academic development of each student. Emphasis is placed on the guided development of independent study skills in preparation for university life. Teamwork and leadership, qualities so valued in today s employment market, are also nurtured. 11 AGE 9-19 Boarding It is guaranteed that in boarding your child will make friendships that will last a lifetime; the very special community spirit, mutual support and fun and laughter they will share with each and every fellow boarder will stay with them forever. It is a privilege to be entrusted with the welfare of our boarders and we greatly value open communications with parents and guardians. Families are able to contact the Boarding staff at any time to discuss the welfare and happiness of their children. The school s proximity to the motorway network, main rail lines and Leeds Bradford airport makes it a convenient location for boarders coming from anywhere in the UK or abroad. 12 AGE 9-19 Boarding The Boarding Houses are run by experienced, caring staff who understand the needs of young people living away from their families. They play a vital role in the life of your child during their time at Fulneck, linking academic life and home life, offering praise, support and guidance in loco parentis. At Fulneck, there is an excellent system of pastoral care which ensures the happiness and well-being of each individual. Boys and girls have separate Boarding Houses and boarding is offered on a full, weekly or flexible basis, reflecting the needs of the modern family. When your child decides to board at Fulneck, their eyes will be opened to a fantastic world of opportunities. Our activity programme includes a balance of culture and recreation for our boarders, ensuring that they feel fully integrated into British culture. Recreational visits include trips to theme parks, the theatre and cinema and ice skating. In-house activities include film nights, pizza making, cookery, crafts, games and much, much more. During the week there is also a full and varied extra-curricular programme within school, which includes forensic club, jewellery making, art, drama and a range of sporting activities. 13 Tailoring Education We embrace individuality and understand that your child s needs are unique. To ensure the best possible education for all our pupils, we provide a number of opportunities and a wide range of facilities. Whether a pupil has an exceptional talent that needs nurturing or requires extra guidance with learning, we have the resources in place to give them a first-class education. Comenian Programme Extending the high achievers The Comenian Programme is designed to enhance the curriculum, in order to support our highest-attaining and creatively-talented pupils. We help individuals realise their full potential by nurturing their aspirations and guiding motivation. All subject areas throughout the school differentiate according to ability, thereby challenging and extending the development of all pupils. Pupils who take part in the Comenian Programme have access to a wide range of activities delivered through a year-round programme. This programme includes bespoke activities, as well as providing access to local, national and international events and courses. Learning Support Unit (LSU) There is no barrier to success The aim of the LSU is to support those with special learning needs, by providing teaching programmes and strategies to allow access to the curriculum at a level commensurate with intellectual ability. Our LSU has been awarded one of the highest special learning needs accolades by CReSTeD (Council for the Registration of Schools Teaching Dyslexic Pupils). As a category DU registered school offering a Dyslexia Unit, Fulneck School offers specialist one-to-one tuition within the school as well as support for dyslexic pupils in all areas of the curriculum. The pupils can take advantage of individual and small group tuition from experienced specialist teachers, multi-sensory teaching methods and continuity of teaching and support throughout their school career. Our pupils have access to specialist computer software in a dedicated unit to ensure a relaxed, safe and secure learning environment. In-class support is also provided if required. 14 Admissions Policy The application process follows three easy steps and you are not obliged to make any decisions until we have made an offer of a place for your child. Owing to the demand for places at Fulneck School, it is recommended that all pupils register early. Pupils will then be added to our waiting list and called for Entrance Assessment. 1 Registration If you are considering Fulneck School for your child you should complete and return the registration form, together with the registration fee. Where available, we ask that you include a copy of your child s latest school report with your registration. 2 Entrance Assessment & Taster Day Once you have registered, your child will be invited to spend the day at Fulneck School with his or her year group. Buddies will be allocated to look after your child and guide him or her throughout the day. Younger pupils will join their peers for a few hours for an informal play-based assessment rather than a full taster day. During the day your child will sit an Entrance Assessment. Fulneck School uses this assessment as a guide to a pupil s ability to ensure that on entry to school the education is tailored to their needs. Younger children will be observed in the classroom environment rather than sit a formal assessment. During this time children may meet with the Principal or a senior member of staff for an informal interview. We also carefully consider the behaviour record of prospective pupils and when they are transferring from another school, we seek reference from their Head Teacher. 3Offer You will be notified as soon as possible regarding an offer of a place for your child.
