3 Agenda Item No. Main points, Discussions, Conclusions, Decisions, Next Steps 3. Vegetable Society FONBS would like to foster a close relationship with the village Vegetable Society. We feel this would be beneficial to the children, school and to the wider community. We would like to help the school in maintaining the vegetable garden within the school grounds in order to establish an interest in gardening across all ages. The School has advised that they do not want to lose the vegetable garden but they do not have time to maintain the garden. It has been discussed that FONBS could maintain the vegetable garden and work with the school to incorporate activities where the children could participate. Action No. (if appropriate) The Vegetable Society has provided pots and sunflower seeds to encourage children to grow sun flowers and enter a completion for the tallest sunflower at this year s vegetable show. Children would grow these at home during the summer holidays. Sunflower seeds will be handed out with instructions at the tuck shop on the 5 th May. The winner of the largest sunflower will be announced at the Vegetable Show. Measurements and a photo are to be put on the FONBS Facebook page before the winner is announced. 4. Summer Fayre A meeting has been held with the school and the date has been agreed for the Saturday 24th June. The Summer Fayre will be held this year at the Belper pub. The event will be run by the Belper and will be officially launched as The belper Arms Country Fayre supporting Friends of Newton Burgoland School. There will be a refreshments stall. Cakes can be delivered to the school on the Friday or to the Belper on Saturday. A full plan for the event has been put together and volunteers are being assigned. A sub-committee will be formed to manage this event. 5. Welcome Picnic FONBS have discussed an idea that instead of the Mallory Park sponsored bike ride, holding a welcome picnic in to introduce new families to the school and community. An idea was discussed to hold the event at Hicks Lodge in September. Bike riding can be organised as well as making use of the Gruffalo Spotters trail. Update: This idea has been discussed with the school and they are in favour of the event. We have confirmed with Wraggs Yard that the campout is currently planned for August, so there should be no clash of dates. It was also discussed the possibility of holding the event on the Wraggs Yard. It is proposed that the event could be held on a Friday after school. Advertising and attendance could be done through the FONBS Facebook page. This idea will be discussed with the school before taking any further
