2 Dear Parents, Caregivers and Friends, Welcome to Term 2. After speaking to several children it seems that although they enjoyed the holidays and the free time they were ready to come back and are full of enthusiasm for what lies ahead this term. Liz Meaker and Alison Smith are both on leave but will return next week. New faces Welcome to Lisa Rowntree and Martes Micalleff who are on placement. Lisa is working in the 2/3/4 class and will be with us for 3 weeks. Martes, who is from Sydney, is in Yr 5/6/7 and will be here for nine weeks. They are both energetic and are making a wonderful contribution to our school community already. Please make yourself known to them as they are very much part of your child s learning journey while they are here. New Director of Catholic Education Our congratulations go to Helen O Brien who has been appointed as the new Director of Catholic Education SA and Chancellor in the Archdiocese of Adelaide. Helen has been Acting Director since Paul Sharkey left at the end of last year and has been at the CEO for a number of years and certainly has a strong knowledge and vision for our sector. We look forward to working under Helen s direction in these challenging but exciting times. Tour de Cure and Sunrise We have certainly had an exciting return to school. Well done to those families who braved the cold and early morning to participate in Tour de Cure and Sunrise. The focus was on the bike ride and the raising of funds to fight cancer. Each child received a health pack following a presentation by the bike riders about keeping fit and healthy through eating the right foods, exercising and following healthy practices such as using hats and sun screen. The children also enjoyed seeing what happens on the other side of the camera and being seen on TV by other family members. Footage taken will be in a documentary that will be released later in the year. ANZAC Day Anzac Day has been commemorated well on this special anniversary. Several of our children marched in the parade and participated in other activities such as putting out the flags at the cemetery and laying a wreath on behalf of our school at the Anzac Day Service. Food Revolution Day Friday May 15th is Food Revolution Day which is a global day of action where schools around the world connect with the legendary British chef, Jamie Oliver, and all cook a healthy recipe together. It is a fantastic initiative that included nearly 8000 schools from 121 countries last year! Parent helpers are needed for this day for about 1-2 hours. Please let me know if you would like to be involved. You will be helping children make their own sandwich which this year is called the Squash It Sandwich. Changes to Report and Interview Dates Following discussion with staff it has been decided that Reports will be sent home on Wednesday 17th June (Week 8) and interviews with children and parents will be conducted in Week 9 this term (week beginning Monday 22nd May). Further information about the process for the interviews will be sent home in the coming weeks. Having children present will involve them in a meaningful way and help them understand that they are responsible for their learning. I remind parents that they may make an appointment to see their child s teacher at any time to discuss aspects that affect their learning and wellbeing. Winter Uniform Just a reminder about the winter uniform. Science Week is coming later this year. We are looking for parents or members of the community who have a science degree who would like to talk to the children about their work. 6 R/1 Liturgy The R/1 Liturgy that was advertised last term for May 15th has been cancelled. Children will join in the Whole School Mass on Tuesday, May 12th. Girls Night Out Invitations went home with students on Tuesday, looks like a great night out at Wild Ginger in Mt Gambier. Can you please get your RSVP to Nerys on by tomorrow, Friday May 1st or Monday at the latest. NetSetGo NetSetGo begins this Friday at 4.30pm. To register your child please go to and search for the Penola program. Follow the prompts from there. You are able to use your sports voucher for this. To do so you need to attach your child s name and Medicare number (including their individual number) with your $10 payment. This can be paid to me on the night.
