3 THE SCHOOL Mill Hill School Founded in 1807, Mill Hill School is an independent co-educational boarding and day school with 715 pupils aged between 13 and 18, of whom 275 are in the Sixth Form. The School is one of four in the Mill Hill School Foundation, which comprises Pre-preparatory, Preparatory and Senior Schools as well an on-site International School. Boarding is integrated between Mill Hill School and The Mount, Mill Hill International. We are situated in a magnificent 120-acre parkland campus on the edge of the North London Green Belt, providing a wonderful environment in which to work. The School is very much a community, particularly given the central importance of boarding: we are unusual for a London school to be offering full and weekly boarding, with over 180 boarding pupils. The Mill Hill School Foundation Ethos The Mill Hill School Foundation educates boys and girls from 3 18, seeking to equip them for life, both now and in the future. Our stimulating academic environment and numerous activities outside the classroom encourage learning and personal growth. We are committed to the development of every pupil and believe that our friendly and supportive community helps this to happen. We seek as a Foundation to instil a love for learning which will last a lifetime whilst balancing this with a readiness to embrace change. We are committed to the on-going professional development of all our teaching and support staff as well as the full induction and training of all new staff.

4 BOARDING AT MILL HILL At Mill Hill there has been an evolution in boarding education over the past decade; emphasis is now firmly placed on the development of the whole individual and the many advantages of a boarding education are widely recognised. Boarding pupils learn how to utilise time effectively and how to manage their commitments; this in turn affords them a clear academic advantage as they are able to establish a strong work ethic and routine within a structured environment. They are able to experience a vast array of extra-curricular activity, which takes place outside the School day, as the School site is their home and as such, a flexible and exciting space, full of possibilities. As part of an international cohort, they undergo a unique preparation for university life in a multicultural environment. When pupils board at Mill Hill, they don t just join a School: they become part of an extended family; they have a sense of belonging and know that they are accepted as individuals, that problems will be shared and triumphs celebrated. Living and working within a genuine community, provides a safe training ground within which to develop critical life-skills, such as the importance of communication, consideration and compromise, lessons which cannot be taught as powerfully or meaningfully in the classroom. With a grading of outstanding attributed to Mill Hill by the ISI Inspectors during the last Integrated Inspection for the excellent pastoral work undertaken by the School, our reputation for the highest standards of pastoral care is well deserved; to us, every child does indeed matter, hugely. Overview St Bees is a small Boarding House for boys aged who are members of Mill Hill School and The Mount, Mill Hill International. The maximum capacity is 14. The overriding aims of the House Parent should be to ensure that every pupil is safe and well cared for and to encourage every pupil to achieve his or her full potential in all aspects of School life. This is a non-teaching role with the focus entirely on pastoral care and management of the House. At the same time, the successful candidate will need to demonstrate an empathy for academic requirements, from the perspectives of pupils, teachers and the School s senior management.

5 KEY AREAS Safeguarding, care and welfare of pupils > To prioritise the safeguarding, welfare and safety of pupils and have good knowledge of statutory safeguarding requirements, as well as the School s policy and other pastoral policies > Have knowledge of the National Minimum Boarding Standards > Maintain up-to-date and comprehensive Risk Registers and Pastoral Care Plans for the most at risk or vulnerable pupils, working closely with the Foundation Director of Boarding > Monitor patterns of absenteeism, lateness, unacceptable and unusual behaviour and liaise with the relevant member of SMT and other staff at Mill Hill School (MHS) and The Mount, Mill Hill International (MMHI) > Attend Houseparents /Housemasters / mistresses meetings, Head s and Common Room meetings, the weekly shout, weekly MMHI staff meeting as required > Attend BSA and other relevant courses, e.g. First Aid, to develop pastoral skills and knowledge > Nominate a Head of House, School Staff and appoint and train House Prefects > Organise regular minuted House Councils and ensure pupil participation in School Councils > Implement a programme of House events and contribute to Cross House activities programme > Be sensitive to pupils culture and promote a positive approach to language use in the House > Ensure that pupils clothes and belongings are stored securely and tidily in their dorms Support the Academic tutor attached to pupils in the House > Discuss grades and progress with each pupil s Academic Tutor both at MHS and MMHI Manage the pastoral team of staff within the House > Liaise with the School Medical team to ensure that pupils medical requirements are met > Manage the Tutor team, ensuring they have appropriate standards with regard to pupil care > To ensure pupils are adopting a healthy lifestyle, eating well and attending School meals > Be involved in the appointment, induction, support and appraisal of the House Matron Manage and develop the pupils within the House (both collectively and individually) > Have overall responsibility for the welfare and progress of pupils in House, monitor commitments and maintain pupil files to a high degree of accuracy > Play an active part in ensuring successful induction and mentoring of all new pupils > Liaise as appropriate with the Domestic Bursar regarding cleaning and catering issues > Arrange a rota to ensure appropriate levels of staff cover at all times during the day and evening > Run daily House assemblies for pupils and staff disseminating information, ideas and values > Prepare an annual Development Plan for the House after consultation with pupils and staff

6 Be responsible for the House s administrative, regulatory and health and safety compliance > Update appropriate Risk Assessments and maintain an overview of PAT testing procedures > Identify areas of necessary repairs and report potential dangers to the appropriate staff > Manage the House budget effectively and liaise with the Finance Department > Co-ordinate administrative tasks specific to boarding such as exeat and passport forms > Ensure that fire procedures are followed and that effective termly fire practices are held > Support Matron in operating a termly key audit to ensure sufficient lockable space in all rooms > Adhere to systems in place to monitor visits to House from routine callers or unknown visitors Promote boarding to parents and prospective parents > Work with the Admissions Department to promote boarding and support recruitment of new pupils > Send a termly newsletter to parents and update the House Handbook annually for new pupils

7 PERSON SPECIFICATION Knowledge and Experience Personal Qualities and Skills > Experience of working within a boarding school environment essential, or with children in a professional setting > A genuine interest in the personal development of young people and their welfare > An Honours degree (desirable) > Strong communication skills in oral and written English and ability to relate to others > Working knowledge of Child Protection (Safeguarding), the National Minimum Standards for Boarding > Flexibility, energy and perseverance > Experience of managing a team successfully > Excellent organisational, decision-making and time-management skills > BSA training desirable > International experience and multi-cultural understanding useful > Current First Aid certificate desirable > Current clean driving licence > Ability to work under pressure and to respond and deal with emergency situations > Empathy and patience in dealing with complex situations > Confidence and willingness to try new approaches and ideas > Good IT skills
