No Way! will take place. Bullying is a word that is used with a lot of meanings. Making sure everyone in our school shares the same definition of bullying is essential. Sometimes things that are called bullying are not really bullying at all. The national definition of bullying for Australian schools says: Bullying is an ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that causes physical and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power over one or more persons. Bullying can happen in person or online, and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert). Bullying of any form or for any reason can have longterm effects on those involved, including bystanders. Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying. Students and teachers will be engaging in lessons about the prevention and response to bullying during the day tomorrow and I will be launching our revised Dundas Public School Anti-bullying Plan via the skoolbag app. I encourage you to take the time to review our school s Anti-bullying plan and to talk with your child about the lessons they have taken part in. Teachers, students, parents and community members have a fundamental right to learn in a safe, supportive environment and to be treated with respect. Let s work together to continue making this happen! School Strategic Plan Thank you for the valuable input and ideas that many of you have contributed to the development of the School Plan. Our plan includes three strategic directions for : 1. Excellence in Learning 2. Excellence in Teaching 3. 2 Grounds Improvements As I am sure you have noticed, our school grounds are currently undergoing significant maintenance and improvement. It is important that our playground is not only a safe but inviting and exciting place for our students to learn and play. New mulch has been laid under our play equipment, in our garden beds and under our outdoor seating areas. Many of our gardens have been trimmed and pruned and necessary maintenance has taken place to ensure we have multiple outdoor learning spaces for our teachers and students to use. There is a strong body of educational research where findings demonstrate links between outdoor learning, increased student engagement levels and improvement in learning outcomes. Zone PSSA Swimming Carnival Congratulations to our very talented swimmers who competed in the Zone PSSA Swimming Carnival last week. Special congratulations to Amy S and Stephen M who have been successful at securing a place in the upcoming State Carnival. Thank you to Mr Yee for attending and officiating at the carnival last Tuesday. Bandaged Bear Day Well done Dundas Public School! We raised a total of $1200 for charity and had a wonderful time while we were at it! Special thanks to Mrs Luu and Mrs Malik, along with the SRC for organising and running such a successful event. Thank you to our parents and friends from the community who were able to attend to show their support of this important fundraiser. 3 Library News Lunchtime Library Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday 5/6 Aqua, 1/2 Amber, K Navy, 3/4 Blue 5/6 Indigo, 1/2 Orange, K Coral, 1/2 Scarlet 5/6 Steel, 1/2 Green, K Lilac, 5/6 Turquoise 3/4 Magenta, 3/4 Violet. 1/2 Teal, 3/4 Sapphire DPS Library is open at lunchtimes, straight after eating time, on Tuesdays to Fridays. Each class is allocated a day to visit without a Library Pass. Children can use a Library Pass to visit any other day. Library is a quiet space at lunchtimes for reading, board games, drawing and computers. Our wonderful library monitors are on hand to help along with teacher supervision. Encourage your child to visit on their allocated day! Premier s Reading Challenge (PRC) A note was sent home last week with details about a state wide initiative called the Premier s Reading Challenge. This challenge is supported by the NSW Government to encourage children to read quality literature for pleasure. Our school supports the Premier s Reading Challenge by awarding two silvers on completion of the challenge which are presented at stage assemblies. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the PRC, please me. alison.clarke@det.nsw.edu.au Bandaged Bear Breakfast Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Bandaged Bear Breakfast. It was wonderful to see families sharing picnic rugs and enjoying the event with their children. The SRC enthusiastically fulfilled their roles and had fun hosting the successful event. The Bandaged Bear Appeal focuses on helping kids live their healthiest lives possible. We are proud to announce that our school has raised over $1200 for The Children s Hospital at Westmead. Thank you for your support! Student Eyecare Program The Student Eyecare Program will be running in term two this year. An optometrist will be onsite during school hours to provide students with a free comprehensive eye examination that is covered through Medicare Australia. Thank you to everyone who has already submitted their form. If you wished for your child to participate in the program, please return the form by Thursday 22 nd March 2018 to the class teacher.

4 Harmony Day Students are encouraged to wear ORANGE mufti to celebrate Harmony Day on Wednesday 21 st March Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Day. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. The message of Harmony Day is everyone belongs.
