1 Newsletter for Students and Parents Friday 18th November 2016 Learners of today, Leaders of tomorrow. The Principal writes To reinforce the messages that we regularly give students about the need to look after their own safety at all times, and especially on the journey to and from school, we welcomed visitors from Transport for London this week to speak to students in assemblies, in particular about the dangers of railways and at stations. Whilst only a minority of students use the train regularly to come to school, the messages were applicable to other forms of transport and served to highlight this important issue. Today, students have been generously donating to Children in Need in a range of ways. Some have been making a donation in order to guess the number of sweets in a jar or the number of inflated balloons in Mr Foney s car all in the hope of winning a small prize! Others have taken part in a Baby Photo Quiz in which they have tried to match baby photos to the adults (teachers) who they have grown up to become. Meanwhile, a group of College VI students have been washing cars all day (and it has been quite cold today!) for 5 donations. A number of students brought in cakes for sale, also, one of which we have decided to auction. See below a picture of a very impressive Pudsey cake, baked by Rhianna Cork 7SEA Phoenix College. We would like to invite bids for this cake the highest bid already received is 50! If you would like to enter the auction, please your details with the amount you wish to pledge to admin@riddlesdown.org by 10.00am on Monday 21 st November. Thank you to everyone who has donated and special thanks to the College VI students who organised today s fundraising activities. Students and parents have also shown their generosity in donating to the Love in a Box charity for Children in Distress. Thank you to everyone involved and details are featured later in this newsletter. We are looking forward to welcoming parents of Year 11 students to our GCSE Preparation Evening next Wednesday, 23 rd November at 6.00pm. This will be an opportunity for parents to develop their understanding of how they might best support students in this crucial year as they prepare for GCSE exams next summer. We are also looking forward to welcoming lots of visitors to the Friends of Riddlesdown Collegiate Christmas Shopping Event next Thursday, 24 th November 2016, pm. 2 Netball National School Tournament Sunday 13th September saw our 11A Netball team take on schools all over Surrey for the National Schools Tournament. The girls battled through 7 difficult matches and were able to showcase their ability and strength to work together as a team, even though we were missing one player! Next step for these girls, Surrey Schools Finals in the New Year! Spanish Club Spanish club is now starting and will meet every Wednesday lunch from 1:00pm to 1:40pm. This is open to all Year groups. Year 8A Netball Team Well done to the Year 8a Netball team who played Wallington on Monday night and won Congratulations Ani Broom who was the player of the match. Year 7 Football Team Croydon Schools Champions The Year 7 football team were crowned Croydon Schools Champions on Wednesday after some excellent performances. They kicked off with a 3-0 win against Harris Purley and then beat Oasis Shirley Park 2-0. We then drew with Tenison s 1-1 and lost to Thomas More 1-0, but that was enough to go through the group stage as champions. In the semi-finals Riddlesdown faced a strong Harris CP team but battled through to win 2-0 and put themselves in the final where we met Tenison s again. Only one goal separated the teams, with Riddlesdown winning 1-0. Well done to all the boys involved, who now go on to represent Croydon in the South East of England Championships.

3 Love in a Box Thank you to everyone who took part in the Love in a Box Project. At am today the Children in Distress charity collected 108 boxes for boys and girls of all ages and some boxes for the elderly from the playground The next part of their journey to Romania starts on Tuesday. Your generosity and kindness is so appreciated by the charity. A special thank you to Emily Speed, Chair of the Charity Society who led this Sixth Form Project together with Emily Wright, Emily Bloomfield, Megan Deefolts, Martha Littlehales and Lucy Shardlow who covered and sorted new boxes yesterday and this morning. The winner for the form with the most boxes was Mr Bocking s class, with an impressive 14. Sharon Woodworth School Librarian

4 Duke of Edinburgh Reminder that the new date for the Duke of Edinburgh Parents Information evening is Monday 28th November at 6.30pm in the Main Hall. Apologies for the cancellation of the original date. Also a reminder that payment for D of E is due via Parentpay by Wednesday 23rd November 2016, 65 for bronze and 85 for silver. If you do not have a Parentpay account and wish to pay by cash or cheque (made payable to Riddlesdown Collegiate) this can be handed in at student services addressed to Mrs White. The form that was sent with the acceptance letter asking students to choose activities for their three sections (volunteering, physical, skills) should have now been completed if this has not been done please can it be done urgently and returned to Mrs White in Student Services. If for any reason students no longer wish to participate in the D of E Award please can you let Mrs White know immediately.
