The Bishop of Hereford s Bluecoat School Exam Information For Year 11 A Vibrant Christian learning community

Welcome to the Year 11 Exams Information Evening The purpose of this evening is to explain the revision and preparation framework to support students in achieving success in their GCSE examinations. This will be shared with students in a dedicated Year 11 assembly towards the end of term. We firmly believe that each student can maximise their results if home and school are working in partnership together. To this end we will also be discussing what you can do to help. The booklet is aimed at both parent/carers and students to allow you to work together to ensure the best results. The evening will cover the following areas: Exam Entries Exam Timetables Exam Regulations and Expectations What to do in the event of an illness Revision Results Thank you for attending. Martin Henton Deputy Head (Achievement)

INTRODUCTION This booklet contains information related to examinations. Further information can be found on the school website under Teaching and Learning/Examination Information. The information on the website must be read by all students. NON EXAMINATION ASSESSMENT (NEA)/ CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT Some GCSE qualifications include NEA or Controlled Assessment. Where this is this case students will be informed of their NEA/ Controlled Assessment mark before the mark is submitted to the exam board. Students will be able to request an internal review of their mark. The procedure can be found on the school website. THE EXAMINATION DAY Check that you have all the necessary equipment. Do not take any unauthorised papers or equipment into the examination room. Also pagers, mobile phones and digital storage devices (e.g: Ipod, Smart Watches) are not allowed. Following instructions from the Examination Boards, mascots are NOT allowed either. CONDUCT Inspectors from the Examination Board may visit the school at any time. Examination Rules Must Be Followed At All Times BEFORE THE EXAMINATION 1. You are expected to arrive in the exam room in full uniform. Any unauthorised items or clothing will have to be removed and left outside the exam room. You remain a student at the school until the end of the exam period. 2. Check your timetable or the seating plan outside the exam room so that you can find your place quickly. 3. Arrive a minimum of 10 minutes before the scheduled start of the exam and wait outside quietly. 4. You will be told when you may enter the exam hall. 5. School will contact parents/carers straight away if you are missing from the exam. DURING THE EXAMINATION The examination rules apply as soon as you walk into the examination room. 1. You must not talk to, disturb or communicate with another candidate.

2. When seated you must face the front of the hall at all times. 3. If you have a problem, feel ill, or need more paper, put up your hand and wait. 4. Listen to the invigilator and do what you are asked to do. LEAVING THE EXAMINATION ROOM 1. At the end of the examination the Invigilators will dismiss candidates in an orderly fashion. 2. You must not talk until you have left the room. 3. You may not leave until the full time has elapsed because frequent movement will disturb other candidates. ILLNESS Sufferers from hay-fever, migraine or similar ailments should take advice from their doctor now. If you are ill on the day of your examination, tell the school immediately, fill in the self-certification form, JCQ/ME Form 14 (available from reception and on-line from JCQ)and if possible get a doctor s note and and give it to the Examinations Officer as soon as possible. In most cases even if you get a doctor s note, the Examination Board will be unable to award you a grade unless you have done over 25% of the components of the examination. Try to attend the written examination, even if you are quite ill. The Board will use the doctor s note and/or self-certification form as evidence to make allowance for a poor performance. IF YOU DON T TURN UP FOR THE EXAM School will contact parents/carers if you are missing from the exam. If you still don t turn up you will not be awarded a mark for that exam. You will not be allowed to sit the paper at another time. You may be charged by the examination board for failure to sit the exam. EXAM CLASH If you have two examinations scheduled for the same time slot, you will receive a letter explaining your alternative arrangements. If you feel in any doubt please check with the Examinations Officer.

TIME Double check the day before the exam, whether it is a morning examination or an afternoon examination. Arrive 10 minutes before the examination starts. Unless otherwise stated (see time table) morning exams will start at 9.00a.m. and afternoon exams at 1.00p.m. VENUE Make sure you know where the exam takes place. This could be the Sports Hall, Main Hall or any other room. ACCESS ARRANGEMENTS Access Arrangements are pre-examination adjustments for candidates based on evidence of need and normal way of working. Access Arrangements fall into two distinct categories: some arrangements are delegated to centres, others require prior JCQ awarding body approval. Access Arrangements allow candidates/learners with special educational needs, disabilities or temporary injuries to access the assessment without changing the demands of the assessment. For example, readers, scribes and Braille question papers. In this way Awarding Bodies will comply with the duty of the Equality Act 2010 to make 'reasonable adjustments'. SPECIAL CONSIDERATION Special Consideration is a post examination adjustment to a candidate's mark or grade to reflect temporary injury, illness or other indisposition at the time of the examination/assessment. Please let the Examinations Officer know of any circumstances that you feel may have had an adverse effect on exam performance e.g. temporary illness or accident/injury, bereavement, domestic crisis. RESULTS DAY Results will be available on Thursday 23 rd August 2018 from am. The student must collect their results in person or give written permission for another person to collect them on their behalf. Alternatively, results can be sent home if a stamped, addressed envelope is supplied in advance.

The Bishop of Hereford's Bluecoat School APPEALS POLICY Procedure for Students Following Release of Marks from the Awarding Bodies Enquiries About Results Upon issue of results, any student with a query or concern about an examination grade should contact the Examinations Officer who will advise on what options are available and the associated costs. 1. Students should be aware that Enquiries about Results (EARs) can result in marks being raised, confirmed or lowered. Students will need to sign a consent form to confirm that they understand the consequence of an enquiry. 2. The Curriculum Team Leader for the subject will review the marks and discuss the way forward, taking into account the breakdown of marks and grade boundaries. 3. If there are reasonable grounds for believing there has been an error in marking an EAR may be requested by the Curriculum Team Leader, it will also need to be supported by the Deputy Head (Achievement). The student s consent form will need to be completed and forwarded to the Exams Officer before 13 th September Students wishing to request an EAR without the support of the relevant Curriculum Team Leader may proceed with the EAR but all costs will need to be paid by themselves when the student consent form is submitted. This will also need to be completed and forwarded to the Exams Officer as above. If the outcome of the EAR is successful and leads to an increase in GCSE grade the fee will be reimbursed to you from the Examination Officer. 5. After the release of results, candidates may ask the Examinations Officer to request the return of examination papers. 6. If examination papers are requested by the school for investigation or for teaching purposes, the consent of students will be obtained. 7. Outcomes following an EAR will be made in writing by the Exams Officer to the student as soon as they are received from the Awarding Body. 8. Appeals against the outcome of an EAR can only be made by the Headteacher and must be made within 14 days of the schools receipt of the outcome of the EAR. INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES The following information explains what may happen following an enquiry about the result of an examination. If the school makes an enquiry about the result of one of your examinations after your subject grade has been issued, there are three possible outcomes: Your original mark is lowered, so your final grade may be lower than the original grade you received.

Your original mark is confirmed as correct, and there is no change to your grade. Your original mark is raised, so your final grade may be higher than the original grade you received. In order to proceed with the enquiry you must sign the form below. This confirms that you have understood what the outcome might be, and that you give your consent to the enquiry being made. Centre number: Candidate number:.... Candidate name:... Details of enquiry (Awarding Body, Qualification level, Subject title, paper/unit) I give my consent to the Head of my Examination Centre to make an enquiry about the result of the examination(s) listed above. In giving consent I understand that the final subject grade awarded to me may be lower than, higher than, or the same as the grade which was originally awarded for this subject. Students signature:... Date:.. COSTS AND DEADLINES Before considering a clerical check or review of marking please get advice from the Curriculum Team Leader for the subject. Then check with the Examinations Officer before submitting a request to ensure which services are available for the unit, and the cost involved for the service. Costs range from to per unit depending on exam board. The Examinations Officer will be available to deal with enquiries on Friday 24 th August 2018 from 9am to 1pm on Deadline for submitting your completed form and payment to school is 13 th September 2018.

What do you need for a written exam? Students Should Arrive At Exams With The Appropriate Equipment Black Pens HB Pencil Calculator Sharpener Ruler Highlighter Coloured Pencils Clear pencil case/clear bag Rubber Compass/Protractor Arrive in the exam room with all equipment that you will require for your exam. Check with your subject teacher if you are not sure. DO NOT bring mobile phones or any kind of digital storage device into the exam hall. You may bring a drink but all labels must be removed from bottles before entering the exam hall. Wrist watches must be placed on the desk in clear view of the invigilator.

Six things you need to know about the new 9 to 1 GCSE grades GCSEs in England are being reformed and will be graded with a new scale from 9 to 1, with 9 being the highest grade. New GCSE content will be more challenging. Fewer grade 9s will be awarded than A*s. The new grades are being brought in to signal that GCSEs have been reformed and to better differentiate between students of different abilities. Another 20 subjects will have 9 to 1 grading in 2018, with most others following in During this transition, students will receive a mixture of letter and number grades. In the first year each new GCSE subject is introduced, broadly the same proportion of students will get a grade 4 or above as would have got a grade C or above in the old system. You can see how the 9 to 1 grades compare with the A* to G scale in the following table.
