Payment timelines are very important during Term 4 as we need to close our books and finalise our budget so that we can prepare for While we try to accommodate the occasional late payment so that students don t miss out, we will need to stick to timelines for upcoming events. Thank you for your support with this. Student Free Day: Monday, October 16th is a designated Student Free Day which is used for Staff Professional Development. Our office will be open but all teaching staff will be off campus participating in a Professional Learning Day. No students should be attending school on this day. Thank you to our P&C: Over the holidays our P&C organised a working bee and transformed the garden behind the library to a Rainbow Garden in acknowledgement of the work of June Rainbow over her time here at Waterford. It is an amazing space which the children are enjoying utilising once again. A big thank you from all of us! Years 3 and 4 Day of Challenge: Our students recently enjoyed a session of interesting Science activities where they rotated through an organised set of activities. These days take a lot of planning so a big thank you to Ms Elicia Atkins and the teaching team for making this event happen. The students had a wonderful time and are still talking about the day. Prep 2018: It has been wonderful meeting all of our new Prep enrolments for 2018 and watching them participate in our transition program Learning In Our New School (LIONS). If you, or anyone you know have a child that is starting Prep in 2018, please contact our office so that they can be included in these valuable transition activities. Student Achievements: On September 2017, Mathew J, Biarnka J, Kingston N, Isobella N, and Ocean N, participated in an Indoor Netball Federation of Queensland Junior State Championship held out at Ipswich Indoor Sports Centre. The tournament ran for 4 long hot days, with the team playing against 8 other teams across Queensland in the U10 mixed division. Overall the team placed 4 th and just missed out on finals. For some children this was their first ever tournament. At the end of the tournament the children had the opportunity to be selected for the U10 mixed All-stars team for Queensland. I am very proud to say Mathew J was selected, for the 2 nd time, for the state team. He will participate in a 2 day tournament in January 2018 alongside 9 other children from across Queensland. All five students played exceptionally well, and did themselves, their families and region proud. Congratulations to all of the students who participated. At Waterford we are SAFE: Hot weather! As the days are now getting very hot, please remember to supply your children with a wattle bottle for use in the classroom and for outdoor activities. Students are permitted to bring water bottles into the classroom so that they keep hydrated without continually leaving the classroom to use the bubblers. A hat is also an essential item at school. Even if students don t wish to play on the oval at lunchtimes, a hat is required for PE and outdoor activities. Linda Knight Principal

2 FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL PREP TO YEAR 2: Warm Greetings to All, I hope this newsletter finds you well. The weather is certainly heating up for Term 4. I have noticed that some of our students are coming in warm clothes to school. If they are feeling the cold in the morning, can you please ensure that they have a change of clothes in their bag, especially shorts, to change into during the day. It is also really important for them to have water bottles, so they can stay hydrated and a hat so they can go out safely to play. As we are getting closer to the end of the year, the Prep classes are practising a new morning routine in preparation for Year 1. This involves the Preps sitting in the Undercover Area before school and waiting for the Prep teachers to pick them up to take them to their class. We appreciate your support in dropping them to this area in the morning to help them learn their now routines. LIONS Program: Just a reminder that the LIONS Program is starting this week. LIONS has been developed to support the transition to Prep. We look forward to seeing you there. Dates and times are outlined below. It was a fantastic night that recognises the amazing work that Chaplains do in our schools. We had a great night supporting our own fabulous Chappy Rhanee. Team Waterford was very fortunate on the night, with each of us winning a prize in the raffle and our table winning Movie Quote Trivia. All money raised from the evening is reinvested back into the chaplaincy program. Congratulations to Chappy Rhanee and the team for a wonderful night. 3 FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL YEAR 3 TO YEAR 6: Year 6 Graduation: Year 6 Graduation will be held on Monday 4 December. Invitations with details are being sent home this week. There is a limit of 4 guests per graduating student to allow us all to fit in the hall. Please complete the RSVP and return to the office as soon as possible. There is no charge to families for attending graduation. Year 6 Celebration Day: An end of year celebration has been arranged for our graduating Year 6 students on Wednesday 6 December. This year students will be going to the movies and enjoying a special end of year luncheon. Students will travel by bus to Logan Hyperdome and attend Event Cinemas (movie yet to be advised) and then enjoy a special lunch at Sizzler. Students will be required to wear their school uniform on this day. Invoices will be sent home in the next few days so payment can be finalised as soon as possible. We are subsidising the cost of the celebration so it is an affordable excursion as we would love to see all Year 6 students attending. Year 5 Student Leadership : This week I am meeting with the Year 5 students to outline the student leadership application process for 2018 positions. Students may apply for the positions of School Captain or House Captain. Shortlisted students present a 1-2 minute speech to Years 3 5 students who then vote. For School Captain, the top 2 students will become School Captains and the next 2 will be Vice Captains. The top 2 in each House will become House Captains. Later in the term there will be other opportunities such as Prep-2 Leaders, Sound & Lighting Crew and Flag Raisers. Year 6 Camp 2018: In 2018, Year 6 students will experience an exciting new camp at Emu Gully. The activities at Emu Gully are purpose built for developing teamwork and leadership qualities and are typically based around epic events in our history. Emu Gully is located at Helidon and has dormitory style accommodation. The camp will be held in Term 2 Week 9, Monday 11 June to Wednesday 13 June. The cost of the camp will be approximately $280. No payment is required this year however we do require an approximate number of students who will be attending. An EOI form for Year 6 Camp 2018 will be sent home in the next few days. Please complete the form and return to your class teacher as soon as possible to indicate if your child will be attending the camp Planning: To assist us in being fully prepared for 2018, we are sending home a green Return of Students form to all students from Prep to Year 5. We already know that the Year 6 students are moving on to high school but we also need to know accurate numbers of students who will be returning to Waterford SS in We would like a form filled out for each student. Any considerations for class placements must be written on this form. The forms are due back to the office by Friday 27 October. 4 SPORT: Congratulations to Ivan A, Ethan E & Koopah G who competed at the State Track and Field Championship Competition held at QSAC on 10 & 11 October. Ivan performed outstanding with a new personal best in the 11yrs Shot Put with a massive throw of 11.30m, placing him 9th best in the whole of Queensland. Ethan ran a fabulous 100m but his 4x100m relay team effort placed 2nd. Koopah had a bigger program with his 100m and 200m both with excellent times for his classification in the AWD. We are yet to find out whether Koopah has been selected for the QLD team. With the outstanding performances showed, Waterford State School is incredibly proud of these boys. Congratulations! Yours In Sport Rebecca Robinson SUNSHINE GARDEN: Wow! Our garden has an abundance of fruit, vegetable and flowering plants. Did you know that we supply our Tuckshop with lettuce and beetroot? Our Sunflowers are growing beautifully and we have just harvested green cherry tomatoes. Take a look at our vibrant Hippeastrum! CHAPLANCY: Hello, it s Chappy here, So we are off to a good start to Term 4 with our Chappy Fundraising Dinner being held on Wednesday, 11 Marsden State High School. I had some great support from some of our school staff and community members. The funds raised from this dinner will be shared among the schools involved. Volunteers: I am still looking for some volunteers who may be interested in helping out with Brekky Club. Our lovely YMCA volunteers are retiring at the end of the year and we really want to be able to continue delivering our Brekky Club to our students. Local Chaplaincy Committee: Chappy Rhanz rhaneet@chappy.org.au phone: Our LCC meeting was held on Thursday, October 12 from 3:00pm-4:00pm in the School Library. If anyone is interested in joining in or getting involved with Chaplaincy at our school, please contact myself on the details provided. LIBRARY: Our yearly Book Fair will be held on Tuesday 31 October through to Thursday 2 November. This is a great opportunity to stock up on some good reads and keep our library book shelves full.

5 TUCKSHOP: Volunteers Needed: There is a high demand for Tuckshop orders and unfortunately without volunteers the P & C will have to consider the possibility of reducing the amount of days the Tuckshop is open. We are calling upon our WSS community to contribute any amount of time that you may have to help with various duties in our Tuckshop so we can continue to support our students and families and remain open for the whole week. If you are able to volunteer, please leave your contact details with our office staff and we will have one of our convenors contact you. Uniforms: Due to manufacturing costs, some of our uniform prices will increase from 4th Term (3 October, 2017). Uniforms can be purchased at the Tuckshop on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:15am-9:00am. P & C: Membership is free and forms can be collected from the Administration office. Next Meeting will be held on Tuesday 17 October. STUDENT LEADERSHIP TEAM: National Bandanna Day is Friday 27 October, Annually hosted by CanTeen, Bandanna Day provides an AWESOME opportunity for our community to support young people living with cancer. The Student Leadership Team will be selling CanTeen Bandannas for the low price of $5.00 outside the Administration Office during 1 st break, from Tuesday 17 October until Friday 27 October, unless sold out earlier. Although the bandannas will be sold prior to National Bandanna Day, they are only to be worn on this day.

6 COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS: School Crossing Supervisor Position: The Department of Transport and Main Roads is currently seeking applicants for the position of School Crossing Supervisor. An application form can be obtained from the Waterford State School Office for prospective applicants. Multicultural Health Day: Come on down for a fantastic day on Saturday 28 October at the Hope Centre in Logan AFTER SCHOOL CARE: At WSS we have before and after school care run by Camp Australia in our school Hall.
