Birkenhead High School Academy was founded in It is situated in a pleasant conservation area of Birkenhead and the entire academy is accommodated on one extensive campus. Students are drawn from socially diverse areas across the Wirral. In September 2009, Birkenhead High School became a girls 3-19 all ability state funded Academy, sponsored by the Girls Day School Trust. The Academy is a lively, friendly community which extends beyond students and staff to include an active Parents Association and a variety of community lets, and in October 2015 Ofsted graded BHSA as OUTSTANDING in all categories. There are 1092 students aged from 3 to 19; BHSA Junior School is an integral part of Birkenhead High School Academy, with 365 full time pupils in F2 to Y6 and 25 on roll in Nursery. In the Junior school we operate a 2 form entry from Reception, offering a wide reaching curriculum, with specialist teachers in PE and Music. In the Senior school we operate a 4 form entry from year 7. Our pupils make full use of the fantastic onsite facilities, including the swimming pool, with lessons from Y3 upwards. We have recently undergone a massive building and refurbishment programme giving an enhanced learning environment. We pride ourselves on providing stimulating learning experiences, encouraging independence in an outstanding environment. The behaviour of our pupils is second to none; we place high expectations on each and every one of them, both pastorally and academically, and they consistently rise to the challenge. We have a talented, dedicated and hard-working staff team who are committed to fostering high expectations and improving the outcomes for every pupil. 2 Sixth Form students make an important contribution to the academy s community, undertaking administrative duties, running clubs and societies for younger students and organising a number of school committees. Nearly all Sixth Form students move on into higher education. The academy has a deserved reputation for academic excellence and public examination success. The A Level pass rate in 2016 was 99.5% and 25% were at an A* - A grade. At GCSE, the overall pass rate was 89% and of these passes 76% gained at least 5 A* - C grade, with a KS2-4 Progress 8 measure at Throughout the academy, heed is paid to the requirements of the National Curriculum but GCSE options extend beyond it. At Key Stage 4, students take a core of English, Mathematics, and either Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Science, with an expectation that they will pursue a Modern Foreign Language. Students then choose additional subjects from History, Geography, Religious Education, Classics, Drama, Dance, Computer Science, Media, Technology, Art, Music, Physical Education and Business Studies. Students may also choose to study a second Modern Language or a Classical Language. There is an equally wide range of subjects offered in the Sixth Form in both A Level and BTec qualifications. The Academy has an excellent library and enjoys the services of a full-time professional librarian. There is an ongoing programme of development in the provision of ICT to support teaching and learning, including a 4D pod, radio station, green screen and inflatable planetarium. The academic progress and general welfare of students are monitored through the pastoral care system, which is based on the form teacher. In the Senior School, form teacher teams are supported by year Progress Leaders. The school has a full-time Student Welfare Lead Professional and Mentor both contribute to the PSHE programme. Whilst emphasis is placed on intellectual development, students skills and abilities in all fields are developed through a wide range of activities. Drama is a popular curriculum subject and extra-curricular activity, and there is a major production each year. Speech and drama, ballet and Spanish are available in the Junior School as extra-curricular activities. Students enjoy the use of the excellent sporting facilities, which include an indoor swimming pool, fitness suite, sports hall and an all weather pitch. They excel at a wide range of sporting activities including hockey, lacrosse, netball, volley ball, gymnastics, aerobics, archery, trampolining, tennis, swimming, athletics and badminton. Our first specialism Music, along with Mathematics, is an equally popular activity in addition to concerts, in and out of school. A major academy event is the Music Festival when about 200 students achieve a high standard in over 300 individual and group classes. Music pervades the whole Academy.

3 The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is very strong in school and over 3000 awards have now been presented. There are a number of charity fund-raising events and students undertake a wide range of community service, often as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Scheme commitment. BHSA, which is in its seventh year as an academy operating on a completely refurbished site, offers employees a number of additional benefits; a free lunch is available during school term time, use of the pool and fitness suite, and shorter terms than maintained schools. 5 Birkenhead High School Academy Role Job Purpose Accountable to: Accountabilities General requirements Review and Amendment Catering Assistant To help deliver the School s aims and objectives by assisting in the preparation and serving of attractive, healthy, varied meals for students, staff and visitors. Catering Manager Assist Chefs/Cooks in food preparation and other related duties. Undertake service of the correct portions of food and beverages at the designated times to staff, pupils and visitors in a professional, polite and efficient manner. Assist with service at Academy functions and events. Wash up crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils, ensuring a high degree of cleanliness is maintained. Undertake daily and periodic cleaning of catering areas and equipment, ensuring accurate records are maintained where necessary. During Academy Inset days, undertake more thorough cleaning of all catering areas as directed by the Catering Manager. Assist with the unloading and movement of goods and stores. Report defects, maintenance requirements, damage or other concerns immediately to the Catering Manager to ensure that they can be dealt with promptly. Update catering skills and knowledge through appropriate in-service and external training as required. Adhere to safe working practices and ensure that instructions given by the Catering Manager, manufacturers, suppliers etc are adhered to. Support and contribute to the Academy s responsibility for safeguarding students.
