2 Dear Nazareth Guild Supporter, I am pleased to share with you a brief overview of Nazareth Guild s progress and accomplishments in this community report. Nazareth Guild unites a community of people who are passionate about Catholic education and believe in the opportunities provided by this rich tradition of academic excellence and faith formation. Our community s generosity over the last seven years has supplemented our school s efforts to be affordable and accessible to any family who chooses Catholic education. This year Nazareth Guild increased its efforts to support individual teachers by offering grants for classroom materials and continuing education. It is with your financial help and faithful partnership that Nazareth Guild is empowered to support students and Catholic schools. 3 About the Nazareth Guild NAZARETH GUILD BOARD OF DIRECTORS In 2010 Blase Cardinal Cupich and Don Herak gathered together interested and committed individuals who cared deeply about the future of Catholic schools in the Diocese of Spokane. Catholic schools in the Diocese of Spokane had reported budget deficits, as a result of declining enrollment and increasing operating costs. Nazareth Guild Board of Directors identified it was time for action and began its commitment to financially support the schools in our diocese. In 2018 Nazareth Guild, under the leadership of Bishop Thomas Daly and in partnership with the Diocesan Office of Education, supports the Catholic schools in eastern Washington in their efforts to provide an excellent academic education based in the Catholic tradition. Nazareth Guild offers tuition grants to cannot afford the full cost of tuition and supports academic excellence by offering school partnership grants and teacher initiative grants Lifetime Achievement Award winner Donald H. Herak Don Herak served our Catholic community for more than 64 years, and was a passionate supporter of Catholic schools. Whether it was the founding of a library in honor or his wife, Carol, purchasing computers for schools, or building a new football field, Don s commitment to Catholic schools was always apparent. One of Don s lifelong mottos was, if you are going to do it, do it right. This report shares what Nazareth Guild has done right: it has given 4.2 million dollars to our schools. 5 Nazareth Guild s 2018 Grant Programs TUITION ASSISTANCE Nazareth Guild strives to ensure access to Catholic schools in eastern Washington by providing tuition grants to children and families based on family income and other special circumstances. Tuition grants help fulfill the promise of a Catholic education in partnership with the family and with their Catholic school. All grants are awarded directly to the school to provide much needed financial relief to their overall operating budgets. All Catholic school students (K-12) in the Diocese of Spokane are welcome to apply for this grant program. SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP Nazareth Guild strengthens and revitalizes Catholic schools in eastern Washington through grant programs that fund immediate school needs and support the success of the school. These grants are made in partnership with the Catholic Foundation and by donors who are committed to the mission of Catholic education. All Catholic schools in the Diocese of Spokane are welcome to apply for this grant program. PRINCIPAL & TEACHER INITIATIVE* The Principal & Teacher Initiative Grant Program promotes innovation in Catholic school education by supporting a teacher s creative project or initiative for the classroom or school. Grants funded through this program are intended for innovative projects or initiatives that benefit students, classrooms, multiple grade levels, have a long-term impact and foster spiritual growth. All principals & teachers (K-12) in the Diocese of Spokane are welcome to apply to this grant program. CONTINUING EDUCATION* Grants to provide college credits towards endorsements, certification, and administrative credentials were made available for our Catholic school teachers. All principals & teachers in the Diocese of Spokane are welcome to apply to this grant program. *program introduced in 2018 BISHOP BRIGADE Catholic schools in eastern Washington facing an immediate need for capital repair and improvement projects are eligible to apply for funding & towards enhancing the physical plant of their school. All Catholic schools in the Diocese of Spokane are welcome to apply for this grant program.

Our Catholic schools meet this need by integrating religious truth and values with quality academics. The values found in a Catholic education are far-reaching and every community in our Diocese benefits from the strength and health of our Catholic schools. As you may know, I attended Catholic schools my entire life. My goal of supporting and strengthening Catholic education flows from this experience as well as over two decades of priestly service as a Catholic high school chaplain, teacher, and administrator. These realities continue to affirm my commitment to strengthening s throughout the Diocese of Spokane. the importance of catholic education National High School Graduation Rates 99.3% CATHOLIC SCHOOLS 97.8% OTHER RELIGIOUS 95.2% NON-SECTARIAN Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed. * 82% PUBLIC SCHOOLS This past year, working closely with the Nazareth Guild and the Diocesan School Office, we introduced the availability of grant funds for our teachers. The Continuing Education Grant offered a partial scholarship for teachers wishing to receive college credits or endorsements. The Teacher Initiative Grant helped support a teacher s project for their classroom or the school. Your prayers and generosity are a sign that Catholic education will flourish and be available for future generations.
