2 Grammar: Irregular Past Tenses Regular past-tense verbs end with -ed. Irregular past-tense verbs do not end with -ed. The past tense of some irregular verbs is formed with an internal spelling change, such as run and ran. The past tense of some irregular verbs is spelled the same as the present tense, such as read and read. The past form of an irregular verb that often ends with -n or -en, such as known or eaten can be used with a helping verb to tell about the past (have known, have eaten). Read each sentence. Some irregular verbs have a different form when they are used alone than when they are used with a helping verb to tell about the past, such as did and had done.
