This course consists of a variety of exercises that provide practice of the listening, reading and writing skills you will need for the TOEFL exam. The course is divided into five units and 14 syllabus items. There are seven syllabus components: listening, reading, grammar, writing development, pronunciation, language support and notes for students UNIT 1 Short s This syllabus item helps you practice the listening skills you will need for the TOEFL. You listen to a series of short s and answer a question about each one. Listening Focusing on the interpretation of meaning in listening exercises. The s in the TOEFL will be much longer than in the exercises here. These exercises are good practice of the question types you will encounter in the TOEFL. Listen carefully and make sure you are happy with this section before moving forward. 2 Texts This syllabus item helps you practice the skills you need to complete the reading section of the TOEFL. You read a series of texts and answer questions which practice your general understanding and ability to find specific points in a text. Reading In the TOEFL, you will be expected to read three passages and answer a range of questions about these. It is therefore important to practice your reading comprehension skills on as many texts as possible. There are 30 texts in this course, but you should also be reading English newspapers, magazines and web pages. You can bookmark useful web pages using the 'My Web Links' area of your 'My Profile' page. Understanding general points in a text. Reading for detail. The questions will test your understanding of these and your ability to use them in written and spoken English. support Remember that there may be other grammar reference units that can help you with these grammar points. Practice the use of adverbial phrases with or without inversion. Check your knowledge of balancing connectors. Practice linking words to connect ideas. Practice comparative adjectives and adverbs. Check your knowledge of 'in spite of', 'despite', 'for all' and 'with all.' Practicing fixed prepositional phrases in relative clauses. Practicing phrasal verbs. This syllabus item includes 10 s plus multiple-choice questions. Remember to look up any words you don't understand in the Macmillan English Dictionary Online. 6 UNIT 4 Pronunciation This syllabus item helps you practice advanced pronunciation and listening skills in preparation for the TOEFL speaking section. It revises intonation, register, sentence stress, connected speech and different word sounds. Pronunciation support Identifying the purpose and feeling of speakers. Identifying the speaker's feelings about accepting a job offer by listening to his intonation. Distinguishing between questions that ask for information and questions asked when the speaker already knows the answer. Practicing identifying the changing syllable stress in nouns and their corresponding adjectives. Practicing word stress. Practicing identifying stressed words within sentences. Focusing on connected speech. Focusing on formal and informal responses. Contrasting the different sounds for words spelled with 's.' Practicing distinguishing between words that contain a diphthong and words that don't. The TOEFL ibt includes a compulsory speaking test. Before taking this, it is important to do as much listening and pronunciation practice as possible. The exercises collected in this syllabus item should help you with difficult listening and pronunciation skills, but you should also speak aloud whenever you can and use a voice recorder if possible.
