1 Massachusetts State Standards correlated to Merit Software Mechanics- Grammar Programs This English Language Arts Curriculum Framework, completed in 001, is one of seven documents created to advance educational reform in Massachusetts. It reflects the work of PreK 1 educators and consultants throughout the state in collaboration with staff from the Massachusetts Department of Education. The ten Guiding Principles articulate a set of beliefs about the teaching, learning, and assessing of speaking, viewing, listening, reading, and writing. The English language arts are organized into four Strands, or content areas: Language, Reading and Literature, Composition, and Media. The 7 General Standards broad statements that outline what students should know and be able to do in English language arts are separated into Learning Standards for PreK, 3 4, 5 6, 7 8, 9 10, and General Standards for vocabulary (4), reading (7 and 8) and for composition (19 and ) have been further divided into PreK K and 1 clusters. Merit s Mechanics-Grammar programs address the following Massachusetts State Standards: Grades 3-4 pg. 1- Grades 5-6 pg. 3 Grades 7-8 pg. 4 Grades 9-10 pg. 4-5 Grades 11-1 pg. 5 Grades Recognize that names of things can also be actions (fish, dream, run). 5.3 Identify correct capitalization for names and places (Janet, I, George Washington, Springfield), and correct capitalization and commas in dates (February 4, 001). 2 5.4 Identify appropriate end marks (periods, question marks). 5.6 Identify the four basic parts of speech (adjective, noun, verb, adverb). 5.7 Identify correct mechanics (end marks, commas for series, capitalization), correct usage (subject and verb agreement in a simple sentence) and correct sentence structure (elimination of sentence fragments) Identify correct mechanics (apostrophes, quotation marks, comma use in compound sentences, paragraph indentations) and correct sentence structure (elimination of sentence fragments and run-ons). GENERAL STANDARD : standard English conventions in their writing, revising,.7 Use additional knowledge of correct mechanics (apostrophes, quotation marks, comma use in compound sentences, paragraph indentations), correct sentence structure (elimination of fragments and run-ons), and correct standard English spelling (commonly used homophones) when writing, revising, Massachusetts Language Arts Mechanics - Grammar
3 Grades Identify the eight basic parts of speech (noun, pronoun, verb, adverb, adjective, conjunction, preposition, interjection) Identify verb phrases and verb tenses. 5.1 Recognize that a word performs different functions according to its position in the sentence Identify correct mechanics (apostrophes, quotation marks, comma use in compound sentences, paragraph indentations) and correct sentence structure (elimination of sentence fragments and run-ons). 4 Grades Recognize the makeup and function of prepositional phrases Recognize appropriate use of pronoun reference., Grammar Fitness Sets 1,, 3, Grammar Fitness Sets 1,, Identify correct mechanics Grammar Fitness Sets 1, (comma after introductory structures),,3, Write it Right Set 1 correct usage (pronoun reference), and correct sentence structure (complete sentences, properly placed modifiers). GENERAL STANDARD : standard English conventions in their writing, revising,.8 Use knowledge of types of sentences (simple, compound, complex), correct mechanics (comma after introductory structures), correct usage (pronoun reference), sentence structure (complete sentences, properly placed modifiers), and standard English spelling when writing Grammar Fitness Sets 1,,3, Write it Right Set 1 Grades Identify rhetorically functional sentence structure (parallelism, properly placed modifiers). 5 5.8 Identify correct mechanics (semicolons, colons, hyphens), correct usage (tense consistency), and correct sentence structure (parallel structure). GENERAL STANDARD 1: Revising Students will demonstrate improvement in organization, content, paragraph development, level of detail, style, tone, and word choice (diction) in their compositions after revising them. 1.8 Revise writing by attending to topic/idea development, organization, level of detail, language/style, sentence structure, grammar and usage, and mechanics. GENERAL STANDARD : Standard.9 Use knowledge of types of English Conventions clauses (main and subordinate), verbals (gerunds, infinitives, standard English conventions in their participles), mechanics (semicolons, writing, revising, colons, hyphens), usage (tense consistency), sentence structure (parallel structure), and standard English spelling when writing and editing.
