4 National Curriculum Level Descriptors - Listening LEVEL LISTENING 1 Students understand some simple, short phrases. 2 Students understand a variety of short familiar instructions, phrases and questions when they are said clearly. They may need some repetition. 3 Students understand short spoken passages & pick out the main points & opinions at near normal speed with some repetition. 4 Students understand longer spoken passages of familiar language at near normal speed. They pick out the main points & details. 5 Students understand the main points and opinions in spoken passages made up of familiar material from various contexts, including present and past or future events. They may need some repetition. 3
5 National LEVEL Curriculum Level Descriptors Speaking - Speaking 1 Students say single words or short phrases 2 Students use a variety of short phrases to communicate. 3 Students take part in simple conversations of 2 or 3 replies, using mainly short phrases. Students express their opinion. 4 Students take part in longer simple conversations & ask questions as well as reply 3 or 4 times. Students express their opinion. Students use their understanding of grammar rules to adapt sentences they have learnt & substitute words & phrases. Students use negatives, connectives & qualifiers to improve what they say. 5 Students give a short prepared talk that includes expressing their opinions. They take part in short conversations, seeking and conveying information, opinions and reasons. They refer to recent experiences or future plans, as well as everyday activities and interests. They vary their language and sometimes produce more extended responses. Although there may be some mistakes, pupils make themselves understood with little or no difficulty. 4

Students read aloud quite accurately. Students look up meanings in their text book or vocab guide. 3 Students understand short written passages and pick out the main points & opinions. Students select texts to read. Students look up words in a dictionary.. 4 Students understand the main points and some details in a range of longer written passages containing mostly familiar language. Students use CONTEXT as well as a dictionary / glossary to work out meanings. 5 Students understand the main points and opinions in written texts from various contexts, including present, past or future events. Their independent reading includes authentic materials. They are generally confident in reading aloud, and in using reference materials. 5
