3 Standards and Benchmarks: 3A, 3B, 3D Categorizing Nouns At the primary level, children are required to use nouns for simple objects, family and community members, and categories. Help your children identify nouns as people, places, and things with this activity. Goal Children will classify nouns as people, places, and things. Objectives 1. The child will determine whether a given noun is a person, a place, or a thing and contribute in creating a class noun scrapbook. 2. The child will classify nouns by completing a work sheet and participating in a learning center. Materials hole puncher sheets of construction paper three-ring binder felt pens glue and tape Categorizing Nouns Lessons 1 and 2, pages 9 and 10 Categorizing Nouns Cards, page 11 category cards, page 8 Procedure 1. Begin the lesson by explaining to the children that a noun is a word that represents a person, a place, or a thing. Name people, places, and things in the classroom, such as a student, a desk, the reading corner, etc., and have the children classify them. 2. Assemble a scrapbook by punching holes in sheets of construction paper and placing them in the three-ring binder. Divide the scrapbook into three sections, labeling each section with a dif ferent category person, place, thing. Have the children cut out or draw pictures to be glued to the appropriate pages. Invite the children to bring in pictures or small objects from home to be taped into the scrapbook. Display the scrapbook and encourage the children to skim the pages to identify the types of nouns included. 3. Introduce Categorizing Nouns Lesson 1. The children are asked to underline the noun in each sentence and then write person, place, or thing to categorize it. For an added challenge, have the children complete Categorizing Nouns Lesson 2, identifying words that are nouns in a list of nouns and verbs. 4. Provide follow-up practice for the children by creating a learning center. Duplicate and cut apart the Categorizing Nouns Cards. Place the Person, Place, and Thing category cards in a row on a table. To participate, the child places the word cards below the correct category. 5. Writing Application: Have each child write a short letter to a friend and underline the nouns used. 4 Categorizing Nouns (cont.) Publishing Project 1. Create a bulletin board with the labels Person, Place, and Thing along the top. Invite the children to write nouns or draw pictures of nouns on squares of construction paper and attach them below the correct category. 2. Computer Connection: Create a document, using a word-processing program, with an extensive list of nouns (people, places, and things). Show the children how to highlight a word and change its color. Then have each child make the people words red, the place words blue, and the thing words green. If desired, print a copy of the completed page for the child to keep. Evaluation 1. Lesson Objectives: Measure each child s progress and mastery by reviewing participation in the noun scrapbook, lesson work sheets, and ability to complete the learning-center activity. 2. Writing Applications: Check each child s written work to see if nouns were correctly identified. Use your choice of rubrics from pages to evaluate each child s written work. Based on the rubric score, determine the need for reteaching or further practice. Record skills mastery on the checklist on pages 140 and 141.
