4 Weekly Experience Spelling Every Wednesday *Please take note that Spelling would be held every Wednesday. Should a public holiday fall on Wednesday, Spelling will be scheduled on the next school day in the same week. 8 The STELLAR curriculum is very comprehensive. Integrates all language skills Skills are enhanced through daily practice. Key language items are explicitly taught to children.

9 STELLAR Language Learning Shared Book Approach (SBA) Modified Language Experience Approach (MLEA) 9

10 Shared Book Approach (SBA) The teacher uses a Big Book in class to engage children and model reading aloud. Through questioning techniques, the teacher will get the children to respond to the books while also teaching grammar, vocabulary, punctuation and concepts of print. 10

11 The teacher organises a learning experience for the children. Modified Language Experience For example, she might have the class make sandwiches for a character in a story they have read together. This experience will act as a springboard for writing. Approach (MLEA) The teacher models writing using children s language. Children engage in writing together and in writing independently. 11

16 Term 1 (P1 EL Weighting: 0%) Diagnostic Reading (Pre-test - Week 5) High Frequency Word List (100 words) Refer to the checklist - Practise reading the words with your child daily Try 5 words/day and build on it, for e.g., Monday (5 words), Tuesday (5 words + the previous 5)

17 Focus: Writing - Penmanship Clear distinction between capital and small letters, clear punctuation marks namely full-stops, commas and apostrophes Tip for parents: Refer to the STELLAR Handwriting book for examples of good handwriting

18 Show & Tell (Week 10) (Zoo experience) Focus: Basic presentation structure i.e. - Introduce oneself - Describe their favourite animal in 2 or 3 sentences - Closure Teaching of skills and sentence structure for script to be done in class Focus: Delivery - voice projection & confidence

19 Term 2 (P1 EL Weighting: 30%) Listening Comprehension Spelling (10 words out of 15 words) Word Order Total for Term 2: 30%

20 Reading Post-test High Frequency Word List (same list as pre-test) Pupils who scored 100% in the pre-test in Term 1 will still be given a post-test consisting the same words to check on their retention. In addition, such pupils will also be given a short passage to stretch and move them up to the next level, which is on fluency.

21 Spelling Test Focus: 10 words out of 15 words will be tested Tip for parents: Take time to ensure that your child has mastered the weekly Spelling lists. Look out for your child s performance at the weekly Spelling tests on Wednesday and revisit the words periodically. Word Order Test Focus: The sequence of words in a sentence; to build correctly ordered sentences in English.

22 Listening Comprehension Focus: - Questions on beginning sounds - Questions on ending sounds - Questions on picture-matching based on vocabulary learnt. Tip for parents: Look out for Sounds and Listening Booklet and reinforce the skills taught in class

24 Show & Tell Presentation - Introduce oneself - Describe their favourite storybook in 5 to 8 sentences - Closure Teaching of skills and sentence structure for script to be done in class

25 Language Paper - Grammar - Vocabulary Tip for parents: Look out for the STELLAR worksheets and additional worksheets, reinforce skills taught.

27 Oral Assessment Reading Aloud Picture Conversation Focus: The ability to describe and give personal responses for a given picture, in grammatically correct sentences. Tips for parents: - Refer to the practice examples used for class discussions. - Discuss pictures in books/newspapers

28 Writing Assessment Picture Composition Guided writing with picture prompts and helping words (about 2-3 sentences per picture) Focus: Punctuation and Sentence construction Tip for parents: Look out for the Composition Writing exercises and reinforce the skills that have been taught.

29 Language Paper Focus: Grammar MCQ and Cloze Vocabulary MCQ and Cloze Comprehension MCQ Comprehension Open-ended Tip for parents: Look out for the STELLAR worksheets and other resources used daily, reinforce skills taught.

30 Parents Support Home support help your child learn English by providing English language reading materials at home. Activate child s interest show your child that you believe learning English is both enjoyable and useful in your daily life. 30
