1 Revise and Practise Grammar (Pack 1) This pack has been created to help your child improve their grammarr skills. Many children need to practice their grammar. By the end of Primary school, children s grammar and punctuation skills need to be at a high level. They need to have a good grasp of nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, prepositions etc, in order to structure their sentences in interesting and grammatically correct ways. Punctuation such as commas, apostrophes, capital letters, colons etc, must be used correctly within sentences. How to Use This Pack Your child can work through this pack at their own pace. When a page has been completed, work can be marked using the answers sheets. Tracking Progress Keep track of progress using the Progress Tracker. Your child can think about how they found the work and colour in the appropriate face. I am confident with this. I found some parts hard. I found this difficult, I need more practice. 1

3 A or An When do you use the word a? When do you use the word an? A grammatically correct sentence uses a and an in the right place. a bag an umbrella If you use a word that begins with a consonant, a is used. If you use a word that begins with a vowel, an is used. 1) Write a or an before each noun. apple cat fire owl strawberry 2) Choose 2 vowels and 3 consonants from the alphabet, write them below: Write a fruit or animal that begins with each letter. Write a or an before each word, e.g. an ostrich, a banana 3) Write a or an in front of each adjective. Write a noun to go with each one. a) green b) old c) new d) interesting e) ugly f) clean 3

4 Adjectives An adjective is a describing word. Adjectives help build a picture in the readers mind. Using a variety of adjectives builds interest. Adjectives can be comparative and superlative. 1) Choose an adjective to describe each object. a) The table was. (enormous, wooden, square) b) The star was. (bright, twinkling, shining) c) The forest was. (dark, gloomy, scary) d) The fairy was. (kind, tiny, magical) 2) How many of these adjectives can you put into one sentence? a) furry huge hungry black tasty b) white creepy thin round plastic 3) Comparative adjectives are used to compare two things. Complete these sentences using a comparative, then finish the sentence. a) My brother is richer than the Queen of England. b) The ice-cream was than c) Her teeth were than d) My car is than e) My dad is than colder taller faster richer whiter 4) Complete these superlative adjectives. The first one has been done for you. a) fast, faster, fastest b) funny,, c) crunchy,, d) bright,, e) safe,, g) lonely,, f) creamy,, h) dull,, 4

He spread out a blanket and put the cheese and tomato, he had brought with him, on top. He sat down to eat. Suddenly he heard a loud purr. It was Tom the cat. Re-written paragraph: answers will vary.
