2 Curriculum links and notes to examiner Part 1 Part 2a Part 2b Part 3 The purpose of this section is to assess candidates ability to listen and respond (Lr/E1.4b ) to requests for personal information and to articulate the sounds of English to be comprehensible to a sympathetic native speaker. Candidates are expected to be able to recognise and discriminate between Wh- (E.g. When/What?) and Yes and No questions. Candidates are expected to be able to answer either type of question with minimal response, short form of the verb or fuller answers. To assess candidates ability to listen and respond (Lr/E1.4b ) to requests for personal information, to articulate the sounds of English to be comprehensible to a sympathetic native speaker. Candidates are expected to be able to recognise and discriminate between Wh- (E.g. Pronunciation Sc/E1.1a, b Candidate can make him/herself understood through articulating the sounds of English and uses the correct stress & intonation to make speech comprehensible to a sympathetic native speaker. Performance pertaining to pass with merit can contain minor inaccuracies with some hesitancy that do not impede communication expected at Entry 1. Adequate performance can contain inaccuracies with some hesitancy that can occasionally impede communication and require a sympathetic Inadequate performance contains inaccuracies with large gaps in flow and a large degree of hesitancy (below the level of Entry 1) that is impeding and requires significant effort from the listener to understand 2. Grammatical accuracy 3. Use of vocabulary Sd/E1.1a,b,c Sd/E1.1a,b,c Candidate can be understood in simple exchanges and everyday contexts, when making requests, asking questions to obtain information, expressing likes and dislikes through making statements of fact, using the correct sentence structure in relation to subject-verb agreement, interrogatives, negatives and short forms, word order, correct tense appropriate to the time reference used, question forms using modals etc pertaining to Entry 1 (see breakdown of Language competency in ESOL Entry 1 CC pages for a more comprehensive overview of language features expected for grammatical accuracy). Candidates who achieve pass with merit (more than adequate performance) show confidence at their level with minimal hesitancy expected at E1 level, a wider range of structures that stretch beyond E1 language features and ambition to produce more complex structures, beyond E1 level. The candidate may make mistakes when attempting this but will not be penalised as it lies beyond E1 structure. Adequate performance can contain inaccuracies with some hesitancy that can occasionally impede communication and require a sympathetic Inadequate performance contains inaccuracies with large gaps in speech and sentence flow and inaccuracies impede communication and require significant effort from the listener to understand Candidate demonstrates an appropriate range of general and topic based vocabulary. Candidates performing within adequate performance bracket may use simple structures with related vocabulary, use connectives but not all of the time and with some hesitancy. Sentences can also contain inaccuracies that can occasionally impede communication and require a sympathetic Candidates performing within Inadequate performance bracket do not construct sentences but rather nouns and verbs that do not connect to make a sentence, large gaps in speech are also present. Speech patterns contain structural and vocabulary related inaccuracies that are impeding and require significant effort from the listener to understand that would be expected below the level of Entry 1. Candidate can recognise the context & predict general meaning, listen for gist in short explanations, narratives, conversations and respond in face to face situations. Candidate can follow single step instructions, follow directions, listen and respond to requests for personal information, recognise a speaker s feeling and attitude, take part in social conversation, take part in more formal exchanges, follow a simple discussion on a familiar topic Candidates who fall into the above adequate performance bracket may need occasional paraphrasing and repetition in order to understand. Responses are appropriate in most exchanges. Adequate performance at this level equates to the candidate needing the examiner / pairing candidate to paraphrase and root for clarification in order to understand, although responses are appropriate in most exchanges at the required level. 4

5 Candidates performing within inadequate performance bracket equates to the candidate not responding appropriately in most exchanges expected at Entry 1, despite frequent paraphrasing, repetition and clarification from examiner. Lr/E1.2a,b,c,d,e Lr/E1.3a,b; Lr/E1.4a,b; Lr/E1.5a,b,c,d Detail Candidate can listen for detail in short narratives & explanations; listen for detail and respond in face to face situations and extract key information, listen to phonological detail. Candidate can follow single step instructions, follow directions, listen and respond to requests for personal information, recognise a speaker s feeling and attitude, take part in social conversation, take part in more formal exchanges, follow a simple discussion on a familiar topic 6.
