1 SENTENCES & How they work!
2 SENTENCE A group of words with a subject and a verb that expresses a complete thought. Ex: Last summer on my vacation, I went to Arizona.
3 FRAGMENT An incomplete thought Ex: Last summer on vacation
4 SUBJECT The word (simple subject) or word group (complete subject) that tells whom or what the sentence is about. Ex: The big black dog on the porch
5 PREDICATE The verb (simple predicate) or the verb and all the words used to modify the verb (complete predicate) to complete the meaning and tells something about the subject. Ex: barks at the yellow cat in the tree
6 INDEPENDENT CLAUSE A group of words that has a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought. It can stand by itself as a sentence. Ex: The dog plays outside.
7 DEPENDENT CLAUSE A group of words that has a subject and a verb but does not express a complete thought and cannot stand by itself as a sentence. Ex: while the dog plays outside
8 SIMPLE SENTENCE Contains one independent clause and no dependent clauses. Ex: The dog on the porch by the swing barks at the yellow cat in the tree.
9 COMPOUND SENTENCE Contains two or more independent clauses and no dependent clauses. Ex: The black dog barks, and the yellow cat runs. Ex: The black dog barked; the yellow cat ran.
10 COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS F-for A-and N-nor B-but O-or Y-yet S-so
11 MORE ON COMPOUND SENTENCES Two ways to join independent clauses to form a compound sentence Join independent clauses with a comma and a coordinating conjunction. Join independent clauses with a semi colon EX: English is the best, and I love it. Ex: English is the best; I love it.
12 REMINDER ON DEPENDENT CLAUSE Contains a subject and verb but does not express a complete thought. It begins with a subordinate conjunction. EX: When the boy gets home
13 COMPLEX SENTENCE Contains one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. EX: When the boy gets home, he feeds the dog. EX: The boy feeds the dog when he gets home.
14 MORE ON COMPLEX SENTENCES When to use a comma for a complex sentence! If the dependent clause comes before the main clause, put a comma after it. No comma is needed if the dependent clause comes after the main clause.
15 COMPOUND-COMPLEX SENTENCE Contains two or more independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses. EX: Because the game did not start on time, we got home late, and I missed dinner. EX: I had to do my homework, and I had to clean the house because my mother was sick, and she couldn t do it.
