1 Faculty of Business Management and Social Sciences Module Descriptions Language Modules Visiting students shall decide on their choice of modules for their study stay at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences (OS UAS) by means of the modules listed in the online learning agreement: The language course offer can vary in the winter and summer terms, and not all levels are offered in every, either. At the beginning of the lecture period, you can gather from the portal OSCA (the Intranet and campus management system of OS UAS) which languages with which levels will actually be taught. The language modules require a minimum or maximum number of participants resp. Therefore you must be flexible enough to switch to alternative modules at the beginning of the lecture period. No guarantee can be given that the modules at our faculty may not be altered, cancelled or otherwise amended on short notice. The information listed here is also subject to changes. They are able to communicate in simple and everyday situations, when it is about a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and common things (e. g. the own background and education, shopping, the direct environment etc.). 4 The students who have successfully studied this module have an active vocabulary of ca 600 words and can read and write ca. 660 Chinese characters. They are able to talk easily and coherently about familiar topics (experiences, incidents, hopes, aims etc.) and personal areas of interest. They can understand the core statement of a dialog or text if a clear standard language is used and when familiar topics from work, school, leisure time. are concerned. 5 English 2 (Advanced Course) / CEFR A2/B1 Previous knowledge English CEFR A1 or equivalent knowledge, appropriate level Deepening the knowledge of grammatical structures. Extending communicative competencies in everyday life and professional situations (Business English). Analysing and reproducing texts on regional studies. Reflecting cultural peculiarities and differences. 1. Different topics from society, politics, economy with relevance for the students of all study areas 2. Reading of didactic and easy authentic texts 3. Deepening communication exercises 4. Oral and written text reproduction 5. Discussions, short seminar papers 6. Exercises for grammar, idioms, lexis and syntax 7. Introduction to business language Individual work, partner work and teamwork, seminar papers, role-plays, discussion, e-learning Winter : English Summer : English English 3 (Language for Specific Purposes) / CEFR B1/B2 This module comprises ONE course with a total of 4 contact hours/week (= 180 min. = 3 hours), usually held on two days by two different teachers. Only one of the courses listed in OSCA must be selected, but both classes of both teachers have to be attended to get full 5. The course deals with Business Management and general English in one class and focuses on subject-specific English in the other class. Repetition of grammatical and idiomatic structures in a professional context The contents for the single study areas vary. More specific descriptions can be found in the OSCA portal, access via the link at English language modules. Seminar, teamwork, role-plays, exercises, discussions, independent work Winter : English Summer : English English 4 (Language for Specific Purposes) / CEFR B2/C1 This module is subdivided into TWO courses with a total of 4 contact hours/week (= 180 min. = 3 hours), marked with part 1 and part 2. Two parts must be chosen and attended to get full 5. Please observe any given restricted combination, the other parts can be freely combined. If you are unsure whether you have chosen a proper combination, ask the teachers at the beginning of the lecture period. Part 1 (1.5 hours): Marked with degree program, e. g. IBM1 (= B.A. International Business and Management) or all (= all degree programs), deals with general and Business Management English and grammar, incorporating advanced topical issues and vocabulary. Part 2 (1.5 hours): Marked with degree program, e. g. IBM1 or all or Business Simulation, deals with subject-specific English focussing on topical issues in the designated fields. Reading, analysis and discussion of authentic business texts about social and economic affairs in English-speaking countries 3. Consolidation of topics in seminar papers, discussions and project papers 4. Exercises in text layout and presentation of complex contexts 5. Consolidation of grammar, syntax and communicative skills 6. Case studies on intercultural differences The topics of the second part of this course usually deal with different subject areas (see below not all of them are offered every though, more information will be given to you by the teachers at the start of the lecture period). The basic teaching material are videos and original texts from different media. One focus is put on political economics regional studies, and the following geopolitical areas are covered: European Union (EU) United Kingdom (UK) United States (US) United States and Canada (US/CA) Australia, New Zealand (AU/NZ) Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa (BRICS) Business and Economics (BusEco): deals with different business management and economic topics, of basic kind or everyday politics Business Simulation: combines work on a business simulation with a variety of business language practice as required in a company context. Topics here are inter alia the following central aspects: history national characteristics political and legal systems media foreign affairs relationship to other countries current affairs The contents for the single study areas vary. LVMH, PPR, Cartier, Chanel, Hernès, Dior, L'Oréal: All these names stand for beauty, elegance and for objects which made the reputation of the French luxury industry famous in the world. Even though the turbulences in the financial markets have affected this branch, experts for luxury goods assume that the demand for status symbols will increase again soon. This means that, in the medium term, the demand for managers in these firms, satisfying the dreams of luxury, will grow.
