The focus is on basic grammatical structures, punctuation and sentence skills. ADVISORY: ESL 510B or ESL Assessment Test recommendation. Recommended concurrent enrollment in ESL 521 and ESL 522. 2 1. Write simple sentences utilizing correct structure, word order, and punctuation. ILO: 1, 7, 2 Measure: written classwork and homework, written 2. Manipulate sentence forms (yes/no questions, information questions, affirmative and negative statements). ILO: 1, 7, 2, 4 Measure: written classwork and homework, oral interaction, written 3. Read and recognize the following verb tenses in sentences and paragraphs: simple present, present progressive, simple past, future and past progressive. ILO: 2, 7, 1 Measure: written and oral classwork, homework, and written 4. Express ideas by writing original simple sentences and short paragraphs using the above mentioned tenses. ILO: 1, 7, 2 Measure: written classwork, homework, journals and 5. Demonstrate a basic understanding of parts of speech by constructing sentences using nouns (singular/plural, count/noncount), pronouns (subject, object, possessive, indefinite, demonstrative), adjectives, articles, quantifiers, and simple time clauses. These assignments will remain consistent throughout the semester. WEEK 1 6 HOURS CONTENT: Introduce PRESENT TENSE of BE, DEMONSTRATIVE PRONOUNS, and the form and punctuation of simple sentences. affirmative and negative simple sentences using the present tense of the BE verb. Use the demonstrative pronouns (this, that, these, those) in simple sentences. Make contractions with the subject and BE verb. 10/27/2015 2
3 *** See out-of-class assignments which will remain consistent throughout the semester. *** WEEK HOURS CONTENT: Introduce SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE. affirmative and negative sentences using the simple present tense. Spell and pronounce simple present tense verbs (especially those requiring the "third person S " ). Use frequency adverbs. Practice with prepositions of time and location. Create sentences using 'there is' and 'there are'. Read a model paragraph in simple present tense. Write a short paragraph to express ideas on a simple topic and to practice simple sentence form, punctuation, and simple present tense usage. WEEK 5-6 CONTENT: Introduce PRESENT PROGRESSIVE TENSE. affirmative and negative simple sentences using the present progressive tense. Spell the "ing" form of basic verbs. Contrast the meaning and usage of simple present tense with present progressive tense. Identify non-action and action verbs and use either the simple present or present progressive accordingly. Read a model paragraph in present progressive tense. Write a short paragraph using the present progressive tense to describe action occurring in the moment. WEEK 7-8 CONTENT: Introduce NOUNS and ADJECTIVES. STUDENT PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES: Identify nouns and adjectives in a sentence. Write sentences using adjectives and nouns in proper word order. Spell and pronounce singular and plural forms of common regular and irregular nouns. Use appropriate articles (the, a, an). Identify and use possessive nouns. WEEK 9-10 CONTENT: Introduce PRONOUNS. STUDENT PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES: Identify subject pronouns, object pronouns, possessive pronouns, possessive adjectives, and indefinite pronouns. Use WH question words (who, whom, whose). Compare and contrast their meaning, usage, and spelling. Substitute an appropriate pronoun for a noun. Read a model paragraph and identify pronouns and their referents. Write original sentences using pronouns. WEEK HOURS CONTENT: Introduce SIMPLE PAST TENSESTUDENT PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES: Construct yes/no and WH questions and affirmative and negative sentences using the simple past tense of the BE verb and common regular and irregular verbs. Spell and pronounce regular past tense verbs using the proper "ed" form. Spell common irregular past tense verbs. Use "when", "after", and "before" in time clauses. Punctuate according to position of time clause and main clause. Read a model paragraph in the simple past tense. Write a short paragraph in simple past tense. 10/27/2015 3
4 WEEK HOURS CONTENT: Introduce FUTURE TENSE. STUDENT PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES: Compare and contrast the form and usage of WILL and BE GOING TO. Construct yes/no and WH questions and affirmative and negative sentences using the future tense. Use an "if/time clause" within a future sentence and punctuate correctly according to position of the if/time clause and main clause. WEEK 17 6 HOURS CONTENT: REVIEW various parts of course content depending upon student need. COMPARE and CONTRAST the verb tenses studied through a variety of exercises. WEEK 18 2 HOURS FINAL EXAM Included in content section. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION: Students are taught English grammar through a variety of activities that include: lecture, pair work, small and large group activities, written and oral textbook exercises, sentence and paragraph writing in controlled and free contexts, journal writing, reading and analysis of model paragraphs, and grammar and writing exercises utilizing ESL software.
