2 Part 1 The Level of Messages 1 This level of Messages takes students from level A1 and into level A2 of the CEFR. The table below describes the general degree of skill achieved by learners at this level. Skill Listening Reading Speaking Learners will be able to: recognise familiar/high frequency words and phrases related to areas of the most immediate personal relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment), when people speak slowly and clearly. read short simple texts, including short, simple personal letters and s. communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar topics and activities; ask and answer simple questions in areas of immediate need or on very familiar topics; Writing Communicative language competence use a series of phrases and sentences to describe in simple terms their family and other people, where they live and people they know. write short simple postcards, letters or s; write a series of simple phrases and sentences about familiar matters. use basic sentence patterns and phrases, groups of a few words and formulae in order to communicate limited information in everyday situations; use some simple grammatical structures correctly; pronounce learned words and phrases in a way that can be understood by many expert speakers; Communication strategies establish basic social contact by using simple every day polite language. initiate, maintain and close simple conversations, able to ask for clarification or repetition 2
3 Part 2 How the goals of the CEFR are realised in Messages 1 Listening At A1, learners are expected to be able to understand speech that is very simple. As they progress to A2 they can understand more complex speech as long as it is clearly articulated and concerns predictable everyday matters. OVERALL LISTENING COMPREHENSION Can follow speech that is very slow and carefully articulated, with long pauses to assimilate meaning. 4 Reading At A1, learners can understand very short, simple texts a single phrase at a time, picking up familiar names, words and basic phrases. By A2 they can understand slightly longer texts on familiar topics which use high frequency vocabulary. 5 Speaking: Overall Spoken Interaction At A1, learners can interact in a simple way. They can ask and answer simple questions, initiate and respond to simple statements in areas of immediate need or on very familiar topics addressed carefully and slowly to them. By A2 they can exchange ideas and information on familiar topics in predictable everyday situations and handle short social exchanges and transactions. CONVERSATION Can make an introduction and use basic greeting and leave-taking expressions. Can participate in short conversations in routine contexts on topics of interest. Can express how they feel in simple terms. Can make and respond to invitations, invitations and apologies. Can indicate time by such phrases as next week, last Friday, in November, three o clock. 6 Speaking: Overall Spoken Production As learners progress from A1 to A2 they move from being able to produce simple, mainly isolated, phrases about people and places to being able to link these into short, simple presentations about everyday things.
