2 by Isabel Johnson Build Background Read the title to children and ask them what they see in the cover photo. Help children use their knowledge of puppies to think about the book. Build interest with questions such as this: What do puppies like to do? What do puppies need? Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, helping with unfamiliar words so they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that this book tells about things puppies need. Suggested language: Turn to page 2 of this book. What does the puppy need in this picture? Yes, the puppy needs a toy. The book says: See the toy. Say the word the. The has three letters and it starts with a t. Find the word the and put your fi nger under it. Page 3: Remind children that they can use information in the pictures to help them read. What do you see in this picture? Yes, it s a bowl for food or water. So the book says: See the bowl. Say the word see. What letter would you expect to see fi rst in the word see? Find the word See and put your fi nger under the letter S. And you can see that See starts with uppercase S because it comes at the beginning. Page 4: What will the book say on page 4? Page 5: Turn to page 5. What will the book say now? Now go back to the beginning and read to fi nd out all the things a puppy needs. Have children turn to the at the back of the book. Read the word aloud and then together. 3 Read Now have children read softly while pointing under each word. Observe children as they read. Respond to the Text Personal Response Ask children to share their personal responses to the book. Begin by asking what they liked best about the book, or what they found interesting. Suggested language: How do you think the puppy will use all the new things in the book? Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, make sure children understand these teaching points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text A puppy can use a toy, a bowl, a leash, and a house. Puppies need certain things to be well cared for. The writer uses the same sentence pattern on every page: Every sentence starts with See the _. Choices for Support Concepts of Print Practice early reading behaviors, such as pointing under each word, and reading from left to right. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Listening Game Have children listen for words that begin with the same sound. Have children raise their hands if the words begin with the same sound and keep their hands in their laps if the beginning letter is different. Say pairs of words, emphasizing the beginning consonant sound: toy and top; bowl and bike; house and mouse; puppy and dog; leash and leaf, etc. Rhyming Game Have children listen for words that rhyme. Have children raise their hands if the words rhyme, and keep their hands in their laps if the words do not rhyme. Say pairs of words, for example, toy and boy; see and me; bowl and bat; house and mouse; leash and beach. Finding Letters Have children recognize letters by name and loe them quickly in words. 4 Writing About Reading Vocabulary Practice Read the directions and have children complete the Vocabulary questions on BLM 3.1. Responding Have children complete the vocabulary activities on page 7. Building Vocabulary Things Pets Need Build on the words that show different things puppies or other pets might need. Suggested language: In the book we read about things we need to take care of a puppy. Let s think of other things puppies might need. We can think of things other kinds of pets might need, too. Do some pets need a crate? Do some pets need a cage? As children suggest different things pets need, write their words on the board or on a large strip of paper. Begin the list with: See the. (Possible suggestions: ball, collar, fish bowl, food, cage, tank, etc.) After children have made their suggestions, read the list aloud together, pointing to each word. Look at all the things pets might need! Writing Prompt Read aloud the following prompt. Have children draw and write their response, using the writing prompt on page 6. 5 English Language Learners Cultural Support Some cultures do not keep animals in the home as pets. Explain that many people in this culture take care of dogs in their homes.
