1 Wolmer s Boys School 5th Form English Language Course Outline Primary Text: English For All CSEC; English A for CSEC; SBA Workbook RATIONALE: This unit will pay keen attention to: Speaking, Reflective Writing, the Argumentative Essay, Summary Writing and Letters of Complaint as the main topics for the term. These will contribute significantly to the completion of their School Based Assessment (SBA) and coverage of topics in the CSEC English Syllabus. In addition, construction shifts, sentence fragments, visual extract comprehension and vocabulary development will be covered as a means of preparing them for the CSEC Examination. Additionally, at this point in students academic life, the study of English Language is aimed at exposing them to the diversity of the language by means of honing their skills in the various grammatical, organizational and mechanical underpinnings. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Participate in oral speaking activities. Determine the task of a writing prompt. Write effective letters and essays abiding by the specific formatting and organizing features. Use appropriate argumentative techniques to organize argumentative essay. Practise reading from various sources to collate and collect information for a particular topic. Use organizers for prewriting and organizing ideas. Provide specific evidence to support claims. Write well-constructed letters of complaint. Expand vocabulary through reading, listening, and discussing. Use appropriate analysing, synthesising and evaluating techniques to answer multiple choice comprehension questions. 3 REFLECTION RUBRIC The assessment of this component will be based on the following: 1. Theme factors critical knowledge related to theme, how material shaped thinking. 2. Language factors analysis of language, good organization. 3. Process factors personal value, benefits clearly identified. Reflection on topic/issue/theme, use of language, process and its effects Candidate produces a reflection that integrates the treatment of the issue in the three pieces, with excellent analysis of language and discussion of the process and its effect. 5 ARGUMENTATIVE WRITING RUBRIC Content Argument and Comment a) The selection of information/details must be relevant to the focus of the argument. b) The argument must show a clear sense of the writer s awareness of audience (for example, the writer may take the position that the audience: (i) knows nothing about the topic or (ii) shares basic information about the topic). c) The writer must use register and tone appropriate to the audience selected. d) The writer s purpose must be clearly linked to audience needs ( in (b) (i) and (ii), for example, a. to inform, persuade and convince of a point of view (ii) to persuade/convince). e) The supporting details that are used to develop the argument must fulfil one or more of the following functions: (i) expand, (ii) explain, (iii) illustrate (for example, by means of anecdotes, etc.) the main argument(s). f) In illustrating, explaining or expanding the argument, the writer must make use of a range of strategies, for example, defining, showing causes and effects, making meaningful comparisons. g) The writer must argue from a consistent point of view, this means the writer may anticipate the opposition s arguments but must not contradict his/her own argument(s)/position. Organization Logical development and reasoning (a) The writer must present the details in a logical sequence that maintains the focus of the argument. (b) The logical sequence of ideas/details must be clear within sentences, across sentences in paragraphs and between paragraphs. (c) The conclusions the writer draws must arise naturally and logically from the arguments presented. Expression 1. Correct use of structures of the language: - Sentences must be complete (for example, subordinate clauses chosen must be of the appropriate type). - Sentences must be clear. - Sentences must be meaningful. - There must be effective and appropriate transitions between sentences and between paragraphs. - Subjects and verbs must agree. - Pronouns must agree with their antecedents. - There must be consistency in the use of tense. 2.
