ABSTRACT Indah Kusumasari Translational Equivalence of Indonesia Collocations Into English. Skripsi. English Department. Faculty of Letters. Gunadarma University. Advisors: (1) Dr. Mashadi Said, MPd.; (2) Drs. Ichwan Suyudi, MM. Key Words: Translation, equivalence, collocation, politics The subject of this research is Indonesian translational equivalence of collocations into English in the field of politics. Collocation is the way which some words are often used together. The aims of this research are to find out the Indonesian collocations on politics, to find out the equivalence of identified Indonesian collocations on politics in English, to find out the direct and the indirect translational equivalence of Indonesian collocations into English in the field of politics. The sources of the data were Indonesian and English newspaper articles, websites, and 1945 Indonesian constitutions. This research uses a descriptive qualitative research method. The result of this research shows that there are 187 (88.2 %) of the collocations are direct translational equivalence of collocations and there are 25 (11.8 %) of collocations are the indirect translational equivalence of collocations. The direct translational equivalence are identified the most. 2

1. Background of the Research English is the dominant international language in communications, science, business, entertainment, health and politics. English has become a necessity in a number of fields, occupations and professions; as a consequence over a billion people speak English to at least a basic level. Approximately millions people speak English as their first language. English today is probably the largest language by number of native speakers. Because English is so widely spoken, it has often been referred to as a "world language". While English is not an official language in most countries, it is currently the language most often taught as a second language around the world. One element of improving your English is learning which words go with which words - also called collocations. A good knowledge of collocations (typical word combinations) is essential for fluent and natural-sounding English. Using collocations will improve your style of written and spoken English. Hence, the writer wants to conduct a scientific research in connection with collocation. The writer wishes to find out the translational equivalence of Indonesian collocations into English in the field of politics. The writer is interested to conduct this research in the field of politics because in recent time, billions of Indonesians are facing the democratic event to elect the eligible president. People are going to find the collocations in political field that are used during the democratic event proceed. Hence, this research is important to study for the writer herself, the translators and also the politicians to enlarge their knowledge, especially in finding out the translational equivalence of Indonesian collocation into English in the 3

field of politics. Consequently, the writer hopes that this research is useful for those who want to study about collocation and also for those who are interested in politics and want to express anything about politics. 4

2. Research Design The design of this research was a descriptive qualitative research. The use of this method was due to the problem formulation discussed in this research, which intends to find the translational equivalence of Indonesian collocations into English in the field of politics. A descriptive research refers to a method used in research that focuses on observation covering the indications, events, and actual condition in recent time. A qualitative research in general is more likely to take place in a natural setting. This means that topics for study focus on everyday activity as "defined, enacted, smoothed, and made problematic by persons going about their normal routines" (Van Maanen, 1983, p. 255) Qualitative research concerns in this research with attempting to accurately find, describe, compare, and analyze the data of collocations occurring in their normal social contexts. 5

3. Discussion The result of this study shows that of 212 Indonesia English collocations, 187 (88.2 %) are direct equivalences and 25 (11.8 %) are indirect equivalences. THE CHART OF THE DIRECT AND INDIRECT TRANSLATIONAL EQUIVALENCE OF INDONESIANN COLLOCATIONS INTO ENGLISH IN THE FIELD OF POLITICS 11.8% Direct translational equivalence 88.2% Indirect translational equivalence According to Serge Sharoff, direct translational equivalence can be found from bilingual dictionaries provide basic translation equivalents for a headword and typically limit the set of equivalents to words of the same part of speech as the headword. For example, an Indonesia collocation pemilihan umum is equivalent into English collocation with general election. Direct translation is used when structural and conceptual elements of the source language can be transposed into the target language. This translational equivalence is used direct translation because the word pemilihan is translated directly into English by the word election, and the word umumm is translated directly into English by the word general, which the meaning of the SL words and the TL 6

words are directly the same. Consequently, the writer considers these collocations into direct translational equivalence. Based on Jens Bhans (1993), indirect translational equivalence is when the native language of the learner and his target language are taken into consideration. For example, an Indonesia collocation ibu negara is equivalent into English collocation with First Lady. Indirect translation is used when the structural or conceptual elements of the source language could not be directly translated without altering meaning or upsetting the grammatical and stylistics elements of the target language. This translational equivalence is used indirect translation because the word ibu, if we translated directly into English, it will become the word mother. But here the word ibu is translated by the word Lady. And the word negara, if we translated directly into English, it will become the word nation but here the word negara is translated by the word First, which is those two words have no relation at all in meaning. This translational equivalence uses indirect translational equivalence because it is seen from the best meaning of these two equivalents of collocations from the SLT into TLT and not seen from the meaning of each word of those collocations. Consequently, the writer concludes that these collocations are the indirect translational equivalence. 7
