1 Home Letter Lesson 29 BLACKLINE MASTER Look at Us Home Letter Dear Family, This has been a year of growth and change for Kindergarteners. This week, children will discuss the question How can details help me understand a main idea from a selection? In the informational text Look at Us, we will read about children from different backgrounds and their personal achievements. Children will also read The Three Little Pigs, and see how trying hard didn t help the wolf! This week s Words to Know: off, take Skills: Words with y (yard); words with qu (quick); blending words Strategy: Figurative language Skill: Main ideas and details tell important ideas and details about a topic Strategy: Question ask questions about what you are reading Writing Focus: Write to express write poems Activities to Do Together Say as many sentences as you can using the Words to Know in one sentence. For example, The plane will take off soon. I will take off my coat. Then talk about how take off means different things in each sentence. What If? Ask, What if your friend were just starting Kindergarten today? What would you tell your friend about Kindergarten? Talk about this with your child. I Like It! Talk about a favorite story your child read in Kindergarten. Ask your child what he or she liked best about that story. Then help your child write two sentences to support his or her opinion. 4 Dear Family, Home Letter This week we ll talk about celebrating the last day of Kindergarten. In the fantasy story Miss Bindergarten Celebrates the Last Day of Kindergarten, children will read about an alphabetical celebration. Children will explore the question What clues tell you what a character is thinking and feeling? They will also read an informational text comparing schools in the past and today.
