3 Assessing Sudens This secion provides guidelines for assessing your sudens using he Word Warm-ups 1 Suden Assessmen. The subsequen wo secions describe how o place sudens and build exercise packes using he assessmen resuls. The Word Warm-ups 1 Suden Assessmen evaluaes a suden's abiliy o make leer sounds and decode words wih common phonics paerns a an auomaic level. Resuls of he assessmen help you o do he following: Deermine if a suden can benefi from he Word Warm-ups 1 program Correcly place a suden in he Comprehensive Program, he Cusomized Opion, or he Correcive Opion Build packes of exercises for each suden according o his/her individual needs Assessmen Overview The examiner should be knowledgeable abou he assessmen before adminisering i. The examiner should be familiar wih he forma, read he procedures, and review he correc pronunciaion of he words in he assessmen. (See he Pronunciaion Guide for examples of correc pronunciaion.) The Word Warm-ups 1 Suden Assessmen is organized so ha he leer sounds and phonics paerns are presened in he same sequence as hey are in he Word Warm-ups 1 program. Each page in he Suden Assessmen corresponds o a secion in he Word Warm-ups 1 program. The secions and heir feaured paerns are lised below. Par I Blue Assessmen Secion A: Sounds of he Consonans and Shor Vowels Secion B: Words Wih Shor Vowels Secion C: Words Wih sh, ch, h, wh, or ng Secion D: Words Ending Wih Two Consonans Secion E: Words Beginning Wih Two or More Consonans Par II Green Assessmen Secion F: Words Wih Long Vowels and Silen e Secion G: Words Wih Long Vowels Wih Vowel Pairs Secion H: Words Wih One Vowel Followed by r Secion I: Words Wih he Less Common Sounds of Consonans Secion J: Words Wih Oher Sounds of Vowels Secion A of he assessmen has a lis of he leers of he alphabe. Each remaining secion (B hrough J) has a lis of 10 words. Mos of he words are uncommon firs or las names. Using unfamiliar names decreases he possibiliy ha he suden already knows some of he words in he assessmen. The examiner is beer able o assess he suden's abiliy o decode he phonics paerns. Each word in he assessmen corresponds o a specific Word Warm-ups 1 exercise. For example, he word Jep in secion B of he assessmen ess he paern augh in Word Warm-ups 1 Secion Copyrigh 2017 Read Naurally, Inc. 3 Word Warm-ups 1 Suden Assessmen
4 B, exercise 9: Words Wih Shor e. The exercise color and number corresponding o each word in he assessmen are lised on he Assessmen Scoring Workshees. This informaion is helpful when you build exercise packes. Adminisering he Assessmen This assessmen has wo pars: he Blue Assessmen and he Green Assessmen. You should assess a suden on as many secions of he assessmen as possible. If a suden shows frusraion, sop esing ha secion and coninue on o he nex secion. Disconinue he assessmen if he suden exhibis frusraion in wo or more secions or you hink s/he canno coninue. Do no indicae o he suden wheher a response is correc or incorrec. Tip: If a suden uses he shor vowel sounds when decoding he firs few words in secion F, sop he suden and poin ou ha in he previous secions all he words had shor vowel sounds. Tell he suden ha, beginning wih his secion, he words are no shor. Ask he suden o begin again. If s/he coninues o use shor vowel sounds, mark he words as errors. Geing Sared You need he following maerials o adminiser he assessmen: The Word Warm-ups 1 Suden Assessmen Assessmen Scoring Workshees The Pronunciaion Guide Assessmen Procedures 1. Si across from he suden, and place he Suden Assessmen in fron of him/her. 2. On he Suden Assessmen, poin o secion A and say o he suden, "Look a he leers in his secion, and make he sound of each leer for me." 3. Lisen o he suden make he sound of each leer. The suden should make he mos common sound of each consonan and he shor sound of each vowel. On your Assessmen Scoring Workshee, make a check under each leer for which he suden makes he correc sound. If he suden self-correcs, wrie SC (self-correced) on he line below he leer. If he suden makes a sound slowly, wrie SD (slowly decoded) on he line below he leer. If he suden makes he sound incorrecly, wrie he suden's incorrec response on he line below he leer. 4. If he suden makes he long sound of a vowel or he less common sound of a consonan, ask he suden if s/he knows any oher sound for he leer. The suden mus be able o make he mos common sound. (See he Pronunciaion Guide for more informaion.) 5. Poin o secion B of he Suden Assessmen, and say o he suden, "Look a he words in his secion. Mos of he words are he firs or las names of people. The names are unusual. You may no recognize hem. Read each name o me." Copyrigh 2017 Read Naurally, Inc. 4 Word Warm-ups 1 Suden Assessmen
5 6. Lisen o he suden read each word. On your Assessmen Scoring Workshee, make a check under each word he suden reads correcly. If he suden self-correcs, wrie SC (self-correced) on he line below he word. If he suden decodes a word slowly, wrie SD (slowly decoded) on he line below he word. If he suden decodes he word incorrecly, wrie he suden's incorrec response on he line below he word. 7. If he suden uses a less common sound for some leers in a word, ask he suden if s/he knows any oher sounds hose leers can make. The suden mus be able o decode using he mos common pronunciaion. (See he Pronunciaion Guide for more informaion.) 8. Coninue he assessmen for secions C hrough J using seps 5 hrough 8. Scoring he Assessmen Use he following guidelines o deermine a suden's errors, self-correced, and slowly decoded words on he assessmen. Noe: The scoring sysem for he assessmen is differen from he scoring sysem for ho imings on Word Warm-ups 1 exercises. When lisening o a suden read each secion of he assessmen, mark he following: Errors Coun he following as errors: Sounds of leers pronounced incorrecly (Secion A) Words read incorrecly Omissions Self-Correced (SC)* If he suden says a sound or decodes a word incorrecly and hen self-correcs he error, mark he word self-correced (SC). Slowly Decoded (SD)* In Secion A, if he suden pauses before saying he sound of a leer, mark he leer slowly decoded (SD). In Secions B hrough J, if he suden has o carefully sound ou a word in order o read i, mark he word slowly decoded (SD). *You will mark self-correced and slowly decoded sounds or words in he assessmen because hey indicae ha he suden lacks auomaiciy in producing he sound or decoding he paern. 6 Calculaing he Toal Scores Afer compleing he assessmen, calculae he suden's oal score for each secion. The oal score is he sum of he number of errors, he number of self-correcions, and he number of slowly decoded words he suden had in ha secion of he assessmen. To calculae he suden's oal score for a secion, mark he Assessmen Scoring Workshee in he following way: 1. Wrie he number of decoding errors he suden made on he line marked Errors. 2. Wrie he number of self-correced words on he line marked Self-Correced. 3. Wrie he number of slowly decoded words on he line marked Slowly Decoded. 4. Add he number of errors o he number of self-correced and slowly decoded words o calculae he suden's oal score for he secion, and wrie his number on he line marked Toal Score. Tip: As you look a a suden's oal score on a specific secion, consider how many slowly decoded words and self-correced words were par of he oal score. As eachers, we wan o recognize ha he suden did finally ge he righ word; bu remember, he purpose of Word Warm-ups is o build auomaiciy in decoding skills. If many of he suden's errors were self-correced, s/he is no firm in ha paricular decoding skill, and s/he needs pracice o build auomaiciy. Use wha you know abou an individual suden o decide if s/he should be placed in a secion in which s/he had a high level of accuracy bu self-correced words. If mos of a suden's errors were slowly decoded words, s/he has he skill necessary o decode ha ype of word, bu s/he needs pracice o build auomaiciy. Use wha you know abou an individual suden o decide if s/he should be placed in a secion in which s/he had a high level of accuracy bu merely decoded he words slowly. 7 Placing Sudens Afer assessing sudens and recording heir oal scores for each secion on he Assessmen Scoring Workshees, analyze he daa o decide if and how each suden can benefi from he Word Warm-ups program. The following informaion is inended as a guideline. Use your knowledge of your sudens in conjuncion wih his informaion o deermine how o bes use he program wih your sudens. To decide if a suden needs Word Warm-ups 1, look a he oal scores you recorded on he Assessmen Scoring Workshees. If a suden has a oal score of hree or higher on any secion of he assessmen, s/he can benefi from Word Warm-ups 1. Once you've deermined which sudens can benefi from Word Warm-ups 1, coninue o analyze he assessmen daa o decide wheher s/he should use he Comprehensive Program, he Cusomized Opion, or he Correcive Opion. Noe: A suden who has fewer errors bu sruggles wih decoding may benefi from using he Correcive Opion of Word Warm-ups 1 (see below) or may be assessed using he Word Warm-ups 2 Suden Assessmen o see if s/he needs insrucion in decoding muli-syllabic words. (The Word Warm-ups 2 Suden Assessmen is available on he Read Naurally websie, Comprehensive Program The Comprehensive Program is for sudens who need insrucion on mos or all of he sounds and phonics paerns feaured in Word Warm-ups 1. Mos primary grade sudens, and occasionally older sudens who sruggle wih decoding, will benefi from he Comprehensive Program. If a suden scores hree or higher on one secion of he assessmen and coninues o score hree or higher on mos subsequen secions of he assessmen, assign he Comprehensive Program. Cusomized Opion Some sudens may no require he Comprehensive Program bu sill need srucured and sequenial insrucion in he sounds and phonics paerns hey have no ye masered. These sudens should use he Cusomized Opion. If a suden has a oal score of hree or higher on jus some secions of he assessmen, s/he should use he Cusomized Opion. Correcive Opion Some sudens may no require he Comprehensive Program or he Cusomized Opion bu sill need argeed insrucion on some of he sounds and phonics paerns hey have no ye masered. If a suden has a oal score of less han hree on all secions bu has some errors on he assessmen and sruggles wih decoding, s/he should use he Correcive Opion.
