1 Welcome to the FREE Morphologic ESL E-Course Part 1: Learn how to become a fluent English speaker Thank you for participating in the free Morphologic ESL English e-course. My name is Chris Wong, the founder and creator of Morphologic ESL. This course was designed to help you become more fluent in English by giving you an exclusive look into the minds of native speakers. The purpose of this course is to force you to think and speak like a native speaker. My goal is to have you speaking more fluently and with confidence in just 4 days, which you will do if you follow all the strategies in this course and continue to work on your own. I ve taken only the best of my teaching methods Page 1

2 and have applied them in this course to give you the best learning experience possible. What makes this course special is its unique focus on increasing fluency using strategies not found in any English learning textbook. As a teacher, I ve seen a lot of students struggle with the English language, but with proper instruction, was able to guide them towards achieving fluency, which is what most language learners want. If you ask any native speaker to tell you how to speak like they do, they probably won t be able to. The fact of the matter is most native speakers have no idea how they are able to speak the way that they do because they were already fluent before they even knew what the word fluent meant. If you are anything like me, then you have a very inquisitive mind that wants to know every Page 2

3 little detail about learning how to speak more naturally in a foreign language. There are, in fact, secret strategies that native English speakers use when they talk, and in this course, I am going to show you those secrets. Textbooks and typical English classes in school will never tell you what I m going to tell you, which is why these strategies are so powerful. I will introduce 1 new strategy each day for the next 4 days. Take your time to go over each strategy again and again until you are able to use them on your own. The idea is to get a deep and full understanding of each strategy by repeating each lesson multiple times until you understand it fully. I will break down each strategy in easy-tofollow lessons and tell you exactly when native speakers use them so that you can too. Page 3

4 However, before I show you these strategies, I believe that in order to learn a language, we must first start by learning the basics of pronunciation. You re probably wondering why you need to know the basics if you ve already been studying English for many years. Many English learners get stuck at an intermediate level, and are never able to get to a higher level because they are missing some key basic principles of pronunciation. This happens because learners at an intermediate level lack the materials and resources needed to take their English to the next level required for fluency. Textbooks don t teach learners what they need to know because there s simply not enough feedback available in a textbook. Eventually, learners become frustrated with their progress and either give up trying to be fluent or seek out help in the form of private lessons. Page 4

5 I am here to give you access to those resources that will not only help you become more fluent, but will change the way you look at approaching learning the English language. When students come to me, the first thing they ask is, how can I become more fluent? I always tell my students when and why they are making a mistake so that they can self-correct in the future without me having to be around. This method of self-correction works better than traditional textbook learning that emphasizes memorizing a ton of grammar rules, which are too impractical and too many to remember. This is especially true once you reach an intermediate level of English. I ve taught many students who were able to tell me every grammar rule in the English language and performed wonderfully on scholastic testing, however, still had difficulties putting sentences together in normal conversation. 6 Why does this happen? Morphologic ESL 2015 To answer that question, we must look at how native language learners acquire their mother tongue. Infant learners acquire language by mimicking the sounds and speech patterns they hear every day. This is the basis of all future communication. However, when learning a second language, most people learn from textbooks and from their local teachers, but never reach the same level of immersion as infants do, so fluency never comes. To fix this, we must look at the language from a more fundamental level and fix the mistakes that are more deeply rooted in memory. The most common mistakes I hear with English learners happen in their pronunciation, followed by their sentence construction. When I point out the mistakes to my students, they are less likely to make them again in the future. I want Page 6

7 to help you identify those common mistakes as well so that you don t make them again. By doing so, you will become more fluent when speaking in English. In this e-course, I will show you the techniques native teachers employ that you can use to make your English sound more natural. When you speak, you will notice the difference right away, because you will be using the same techniques that native speakers use. Since these lessons are aimed at the intermediate learner, I will assume that you already have a basic understanding of English grammar and can understand most of the words presented here without much difficulty. Each lesson is recorded in a separate audio file. It is important to read the lesson AND listen to each lesson recording so that you develop both your comprehension and listening skills. I suggest re-listening to each recording (starting with this one) as many times as it takes until you Page 7

8 can repeat the words in the same way. At certain moments in the lessons, I will change the speed and rhythm of my voice to make it sound more natural. After all, the goal is to be able to understand and be understood by everyone who speaks English. For the remainder of the week, I want you to listen to as many different English programs and native speakers as you can. You ve started a process that will give benefits for the rest of your life. You can achieve your goal of becoming fluent if you put forth the effort and make a commitment to yourself to study every day. I am both happy and privileged to be able to embark on this journey with you to acquire a higher level of fluency in English. I know that you will succeed in your goals to become more fluent so long as you commit to learning and to practice. I encourage you to re-read through this lesson as many times as needed until you have a good understanding of the material. Page 8
