The PPVT-III is an achievement test of receptive vocabulary that measures listening comprehension of spoken words for children and adults. The Expressive Vocabulary Test (EVT), which was conormed with the PPVT-III, is an individually administered norm-referenced assessment of expressive vocabulary and word retrieval for children and adults. Word retrieval is evaluated by comparing expressive and receptive vocabulary skills using standard score differences between EVT and PPVT-III. The PPVT-III ASSIST is designed to aid in the scoring and interpretation of the PPVT-III. The PPVT-III ASSIST also will provide interpretation of the Score Comparison between PPVT-III and EVT. She was 4 years 9 months old and in preschool at the time of testing. Talia also was administered the Expressive Vocabulary Test (EVT) on June 14, The PPVT-III is an individually administered norm-referenced assessment. The test measures Talia's listening comprehension of spoken words in standard English. Talia obtained a standard score of 80 on the PPVT-III. The chances are about 90% that the range of scores from includes her true score. Her percentile rank of 9 means that Talia scored as well as or better than 9 percent of examinees her age. Her test-age equivalent is According to the PPVT-III classification system, Talia's receptive vocabulary functioning is in the moderately low range. The EVT is an individually administered norm-referenced assessment. The test measures Talia's expressive vocabulary and word retrieval. The EVT was standardized on the same normative group as the PPVT-III. Talia obtained a standard score of 83 on the EVT. The chances are about 90% that the range of scores from includes her true score. Her percentile rank of 13 means that Talia scored as well as or better than 13 percent of the examinees her age. Listen for the Word SUGGESTED EXERCISES Objective: Talia will demonstrate the ability to recognize a specific vocabulary word in the context of a story or poem. Exercise: Tell Talia that the special word is "after." Say, "Every time you hear the word 'after' in the following story, touch your ear to let me know that you heard it." Read the following short story: There once was a puppy named Skippy who liked to play. When Jennifer rolled a ball over the floor, Skippy would run AFTER it. Skippy also liked to chase AFTER birds. But most of all, Skippy liked to lie in the sunshine AFTER the children had left for school. AFTER all, puppies need their rest, too. Repeat the exercise picking a word from the list below. Use any short story or poem appropriate for preschool children. Choose only one special word to listen for during each reading. The special words should be words that cannot be represented by pictures or objects (cannot be learned by a labeling activity). 5 Page 5 A2. Face Game Objective: Talia will demonstrate an understanding of adjectives used to describe facial expressions. Exercise: On the table arrange pictures of facial expressions depicting emotions, such as those in The Picture File from AGS. Ask Talia to identify the emotions, one at a time, by pointing to the person who is [adjective]. Suggested adjectives for facial expressions: afraid happy mad proud sad
6 Page 6 A3. Colors Objective: Talia will recognize and group common items by color. Exercise: This is an ongoing project that can be continued through several lessons or during the course of a preschool term. Lay out five large sheets (at least 11" by 17") of construction paper or poster board colored red, blue, green, yellow, and brown or black. (Always have all five sheets available throughout the project.) From old magazines and catalogs, have Talia cut out items that match any of these five colors. Then have her paste the items on the appropriate color of paper. For example, a red apple can be pasted on the red paper. Every time a new picture is added, name all the items on the paper and have Talia point to each one as it is named. At the end of the project or when the sheets are covered with pictures, Talia should be able to point to all the items as you name them.

Exercise: Play a game of "Simon Says" by having Talia touch the correct body part only when Simon says to do so. Say, "Simon says 'Touch your [body part].'" Occasionally give the directive without using the words "Simon says." Suggested body parts: ankle finger leg arm foot lips back forehead mouth cheek hair neck chest hand nose chin head shoulder ear heel stomach elbow hips teeth eye jaw thumb eyebrow knee wrist

Exercise: Using The Picture File from AGS or a similar set of animal pictures, lay out the following pictures of animals. Have Talia point to each picture as you name it. Then explain the similarities and differences between a hoof (a curved covering of horn that is like a nail or a claw) and a paw (a foot that has claws). Ask Talia to divide the set of animal pictures into two piles: animals with hooves and animals with paws. Suggested picture list: Animals with hooves: cow donkey goat horse pig sheep Animals with paws: cat dog rabbit
