Domigpe Supplementary Book (optional): Ramos, Teresita V., Conversational Tagalog: A Functional Situational Approach Elementary Tagalog: Tara, Mag-Tagalog Tayo! Come On, Let's Speak Tagalog! Workbook by Jiedson R. Domigpe Resource: Tagalog English, English Tagalog Dictionary Prior to class, please order the required textbook through and the required Tagalog-English/ English-Tagalog dictionary. If the cost for textbooks are expensive, you can partner up with someone and just make copies. I m using Google Docs on all of my communications (sharing files), so it is most helpful if you have a gmail account or create a gmail account. You can also look for used books. $20 fee to register for FACC members, $25 for non-members. Funds go to FACC Scholarship Fund. Course Description: Conversational Tagalog is designed to give practice in speaking, listening, reading, and writing the language with an emphasis on culture. The target language will be integrated with specific cultural contexts to gain awareness and understanding about the Filipino society in general. The course work includes activities and practice which support the following components: vocabulary building, familiarization with the basic everyday expressions, construction of response patterns and simple sentences for oral and written communication, and appreciation for Philippine culture. Learning Outcomes : At the end of the course, the students should be able to demonstrate a holistic understanding of Philippine society and culture as

2 complemented by their competency in the following language skills and communication whether it would be for fun and pleasure or business. Speaking- Express self clearly through basic expressions, introducing self and others, exchanging greetings, asking basic information, answering simple questions, buying, or requesting something. Listening- Understand and respond to sentence length utterances by sharing information, following simple directions, and reacting to spoken expressions. Reading- Recognize a number of vocabulary and signs such as Filipino songs, menus, public signs, etc. Understand simple written instruction. Comprehend short texts like dialogues and communication situations. Writing- Write a simple sentence or filling out forms about personal information, short skits, and short messages. Course Outline Week One (Before coming to class, read the vocabulary that we re going to use that day) Ako si.what s in a Filipino Name Prior to class please read the introduction of each unit and familiarize the vocabulary. A brief history on Filipino Language ( ) Cover Unit 1 Lessons 1 and 2 pages 3-44 Greetings page 3-8 (Elem. Tagalog) including practice A short read about self, Tungkol sa Sarili page 9-10 (Elementary Tagalog ) Song: Abakada by Florante Ang markers used as Pronouns, Interrogative Pronouns, Identificational Sentence, Predicational Sentence page (Elementary Tagalog ) Asking questions using Sino and Ano (Elementary Tagalog page 18-22) Assignment: Write a short introduction of yourself to share next week. You can use pictures to express your message across.
