1 HPISD FLES Curriculum First Grade UNIT NAME ESTIMATED DURATION 9 WEEK PERIOD UNIT 5: LA FAMILIA Y LAS MASCOTAS (AP Theme: Families and Communities: Family Structure) 4 WEEKS Unit Overview In this unit students review basic language skills and vocabulary needed to name and introduce their immediate family members. They learn about Mexican family traditions and celebrations. They ask and respond to questions about how many people are in their family, including pets. Students practice using previously learned vocabulary to describe pets and farm animals. They use action words to describe how animals move. Students revisit pet s needs and how to take care of them. They expand their knowledge of math skills by extending by comparing quantities using the appropriate language. They revisit the seasons of the year and ask and tell the current day and date.
