1 AASD WORLD LANGUAGES CURRICULUM #2710 Latin I Description Latin 2710 is an introductory course which provides a beginning understanding of the culture, history, art, religion, lifestyle and language of the Ancient Romans. Knowledge of the Latin language increases understanding of English grammar and vocabulary. This course emphasizes reading in a continuous story line. Students follow the adventures of Caecilius and his family in Pompeii, 79 A.D., and later in Britain. Understand and interpret a language other than their own in its written and spoken form on a variety of topics. Present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics in a language other than their own. Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the cultures studied. Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of the cultures studied. Reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through a language other than English. Acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are available only through a language and its culture. Demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparisons of the language studied and their own. Demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons of the cultures studied and their own. Use the language both within and beyond the school setting. Presentational Speaking and Writing A. Carry on a short conversation about personal needs including what you have done, are doing, and are planning to do. B. Ask and answer questions about yourself and others, including biographical information and topics discussed in class. C. State personal preferences and feelings. D. Express personal survival needs such as hunger, thirst, fatigue. E. Ask for repetition and repeat to ensure understanding. A. Understand simple, authentic written materials such as magazines, newspapers, and/or short stories on ageappropriate topics. B. Begin to derive meaning from simple, authentic materials through the use of a dictionary, prediction, prefixes, suffixes, root words, cognates, contextual clues, and word order. C. Understand spoken language that has strong visual support or incorporates familiar vocabulary and structures. D. Comprehend the main idea of personal discussions and conversations on everyday topics. A. Dramatize student-created and/or authentic songs, short poems, skits, or dialogues. B. Write and present a short narrative about their personal lives. C. Give simple commands to and make simple requests of another person or group. D. Tell a simple story. E. Write personal journals and/or brief messages to friends (postcards, letters, ). IV. Culture - Practices A. Interact with respect, imitating appropriate patterns of behavior (i.e. greetings or gestures) used with friends and family in the cultures studied. B. Participate in and learn about age-appropriate cultural activities such as games, songs, holiday celebrations, and pastimes. C. Identify some common beliefs and attitudes within the cultures studied (e.g. social etiquette, role of the family) and compare them to the students own beliefs and attitudes. V. Culture - Products A. Identify and compare objects and symbols such as monuments and emblems that are used day-to-day and represent other cultures. B. Identify some major contributions and historical figures from the cultures studied that are significant in the U.S. C. Identify some historical and contemporary influences from other cultures that are significant in the U.S. such as exploration, colonization, music, sports. D. Provide service to the school and community through such activities as tutoring, teaching, translating, interpreting, and/or assisting speakers of other languages. B. Participate in activities where the ability to communicate in a second language may be beneficial, including such things as business internships, exchange programs, and sister city projects. C. Exchange information with people locally and around the world through avenues such as pen pals, , videos, speeches, and publications. A. Use various media in the language studied for study, work, or pleasure. B. Investigate careers where skills in another language and/or cross-cultural understanding are needed. C. Deepen the understanding of other cultures through various avenues such as cuisine, sports, theatre, dance, and art. D. Take advantage of opportunities to learn more about languages and cultures. E. Become aware of opportunities and take advantage of opportunities whenever possible to travel to communities where the language studied is spoken, and/or host someone from a country where the language studied is spoken.
