Alternative Sort: Odd One Out Show sets of three pictures in which two items can be categorized as similar, but one is very different, such as bear, monkey, scissors (two things are animals). Have children explain which picture does not belong and why. Familiarize children with the pictures by doing a concept sort prior to sorting by beginning sound. can be sorted according to shapes, colors, living/nonliving things, and so forth. Individual sets of picture cards made from card stock or posterboard can be easily banded together and kept in children s desks to use for practice. Use paper clips or other small objects to demonstrate the number six. Count the small objects aloud and have the class repeat after you. Demonstrate how to sort tire, goose, nurse, and pig. Help children Read aloud the directions on Student Book p. 8. whose names begin like top, goat, nest, and pin. Game Allow time for children to play Match!, which is Alternative Sort: What Is Alike? Show sets of ten pictures at a time, and have children take turns finding two or three pictures that show things that are alike in some way without revealing to the class how they are alike. Classmates can guess the similarity. If children have difficulty pronouncing words from the sort, model using each word in a sentence. Have children repeat the sentence or use the word in a new sentence of their own. To help children keep picture cards separate from different sorts, have them attach together each sort s cards with a paper clip before storing them. Show children the goose picture card. Ask them what other bird it looks like. Explain that a goose is a swimming bird that is like a duck but it has a larger body and longer neck. Little Book Read On the Farm with children. Then they can further sort into animals with four legs and other animals. Model how to correctly pronounce the beginning sound of c as in cup. Teach children how to exhale and squeeze abdominal muscles in order to emphasize the sound. Encourage children whose names begin with c, h, f, and d to play the Bingo! game. If children are unfamiliar with the word cape, explain that it is a type of coat with no sleeves that is fastened at the neck. Ask children where they have seen capes. If a child is having trouble pronouncing a particular sound, watch the child s mouth to be sure his or her lips and tongue are positioned correctly. Tell children that some words have more than one meaning. Explain that a watch is a small clock you wear on your wrist. The word watch can also be an action word.
