Introduction MFL is a non-core subject of the National Curriculum for all children in Key Stage 2. The National Curriculum declares that Teaching may be of any modern or ancient foreign language and should focus on enabling pupils to make substantial progress in one language (National Curriculum, 2014). The consistent language taught within this school is French. This Policy outlines the purpose, nature and management of any MFL taught and learned at Bengeworth CE Academy. The teaching of French throughout our School will be undertaken by class teachers in Key Stage 2. These may take the form of discrete MFL lessons or may be linked to a wider topic if appropriate and applicable. Year 6 teachers from The De Montfort School will teach Year 5 children French for an hour each week. Key Stage 1 teachers will be encouraged to use conversational French, games and songs with their classes. 2

3 Aims and Purposes of MFL 1. To provide an opening to other cultures 2. To foster a sense of curiosity within the children to deepen their understanding of the wider world. 3. To enable children to express their thoughts and feelings in other languages. 4. Prolonged teaching of languages should help equip children with the skills and confidence to study and work in other countries. Expectations By the end of KS1 some children will be able to: Appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in French Respond to simple classroom instructions such as Levez-vous s il vous plait. By the end of Year 5 most children will be able to: Appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in French Respond to simple classroom instructions such as Levez-vous s il vous plait. listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding engage in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions and respond to those of others; seek clarification and help speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words and phrases* present ideas and information orally to a range of audiences* read carefully and show understanding of words, phrases and simple writing 3

4 Values and Attributes It is our aim to provide children with the opportunity to: consider the lives and culture of others; acknowledging similarities and differences develop respect for other countries, cultures and customs gain confidence when communicating with peers Features of Progression Progress can be seen by: an increase in the efficacy of Bengeworth Academy pupils when speaking French an increase in the amount of French being spoken within classes an increase in the structure of the phrases/sentences used (from simple words to grammatically correct full sentences). development of skills conversational skills such as turn taking a greater understanding of the beliefs, attitudes and values of other cultures Content KS1 MFL is not a statutory requirement for Key Stage 1. However, Key Stage 1 children at Bengeworth Academy will be exposed to French songs and basic classroom language in order to facilitate the appreciation of another language. This will not be assessed or taught in formal, discreet French lessons. 4

5 Content KS2 (Taken from National Curriculum 2014) listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes and link the spelling, sound and meaning of words engage in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions and respond to those of others; seek clarification and help speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words and phrases present ideas and information orally to a range of audiences read carefully and show understanding of words, phrases and simple writing appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in the language broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words that are introduced into familiar written material, including through using a dictionary write phrases from memory, and adapt these to create new sentences, to express ideas clearly describe people, places, things and actions orally and in writing Languages understand basic grammar appropriate to the language being studied, including (where relevant): feminine, masculine and neuter forms and the conjugation of high-frequency verbs; key features and patterns of the language; how to apply these, for instance, to build sentences; and how these differ from or are similar to English. ICT Programs: 2Simple French available on all classroom computers. This comes with a range of games, vocabulary prompts and printable activities.
