Identify action verbs (transitive vs. intransitive); distinguish between action & being verbs, helping & linking verbs; identify and understand verb tense (including present, past, future, progressive, perfect); identify verb phrases; use correct subject-verb agreement in sentences. Identify and understand the uses of adjectives. Use and punctuate adjectives correctly. Understand that adjectives modify nouns. Identify adverbs. Understand that adverbs modify verbs, adjectives or other adverbs. Understand that a predicate adjective describes the subject; distinguish between pronouns that modify nouns and those that stand alone. Ensure that pronouns are in the proper case (subjective, objective, possessive)..b Use intensive pronouns (e.g., myself, ourselves)..c Recognize and correct inappropriate shifts in pronoun number and person..d Recognize and correct vague pronouns (i.e., ones with unclear or ambiguous antecedents). Identify and write compound subjects. Identify and use multiple verbs in compound sentences or sentences with compound predicates. Understand subject-verb agreement with verbs of being. Use correct verb agreement with singular/plural/ compound subjects, collective nouns, and in inverted sentences. Identify simple, compound, & complex sentences. Identify 2 complete thoughts in a compound sentence and 2 clauses in a complex sentence. Identify the subject and verb in sentences. Distinguish among the 4 sentence types: declarative, interrogative, exclamatory, and imperative. Use context (e.g., the overall meaning of a sentence or paragraph; a word's position or function in a sentence) as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase. Use common, grade-appropriate Greek or Latin affixes and roots as clues to the meaning of a word (e.g., audience, auditory, audible). Consult reference materials (e.g., dictionaries, glossaries, thesauruses), both print and digital, to find the pronunciation of a word or determine or clarify its precise meaning or its part of speech. L.6.5.a Interpret figures of speech (e.g., personification) in context. L.6.5.b L.6.5.c Use the relationship between particular words (e.g., cause/effect, part/whole, item/category) to better understand each of the words. Distinguish among the connotations (associations) of words with similar denotations (definitions) (e.g., stingy, scrimping, economical, unwasteful, thrifty).
