2 Name # Date: Spelling and Vocabulary Unit Week One Vocabulary Story: Read the vocabulary story below. Complete the activities after reading the story. Davis was furious! It was the first month of school and his fourth grade teacher was already giving homework and tests! He thought it was nonsense to be given so much work when school had just begun. He asked his friends Jack and Henry if they had as much homework as he did. No way! they both replied! Davis was full of dismay because of all the work he had been given. He also thought the assignments were too difficult. Instead of reading fiction passages, his teacher was already assigning the class nonfiction reading! Davis had thought about not completing the assignments, but it would be a disgrace to him and his family. He would just have to do all of his work. Davis went to sleep with an uneasy feeling that night just thinking of all the work he would have to complete! Activities: 1. Underline all of the vocabulary words. 2. What context clues help you determine the meaning of the word dismay? 3. What is a synonym for the word nonfiction? 4. What is the prefix in the word nonsense? What is the root word? 5. Which vocabulary word fits into the sentence below? We found the biography of Abraham Lincoln in the section of the library. Name # Date:
