3 Rhyming Names Phonological Awareness Activities Foster phonological awareness by producing and practicing rhymes. chart paper and markers collection of classroom items (e.g., marker, paper, hat, bag) 1. Write the words to The Rhyming Game song on chart paper. 2. Collect familiar items in the classroom that children can easily rhyme. For instance, the word marker can produce other words such as barker, darker, and harker. Paper could be rhymed to form vapor, caper, or baper. 1. Gather children together. Use items in the classroom to review how to rhyme. Explain that in this game, the words they make can be nonsense words as long as they rhyme. 2. Tell the children that they are going to learn a song that they can sing to the tune of Jack and Jill. Have children hum that tune a few times to become familiar with the melody. 3. Point to the words on the chart as The Rhyming Game It s just a little rhyming game, It s all about your first name. Tell us what your first name is, And then a word that rhymes with it. everyone sings, moving from left to right and sweeping back again. Model your name and a rhyming word. Have one child at a time say his or her name and then a word that rhymes with it. Help children who have trouble with this by suggesting a rhyming word. Remember, most words will not be actual words, since rhyming is the focus. 4. Continue rhyming practice using the collection of classroom items. Hold up one item at a time and see how many rhyming words children can make. Have children practice by using the names of their family members. 4 Rhyming Chain Phonological Awareness Activities Foster phonological awareness by producing and practicing rhymes. Alphabet Picture Cards (pages 56 62) 1. Copy and cut apart the picture cards. 2. Remove all picture cards that have more than one syllable. 1. Gather children together. Teach or review how to rhyme. Remind children that to rhyme, you say a word that has the same ending sound as the original word. 2. Hold up one picture card and identify the picture. (e.g., Use the picture of the cat and say cat. Tell children that one rhyming word for cat is hat. Both words end with the same sound, in this case the sound is /at/.) 3. Have children raise their hands and give additional words that rhyme with the pictured word, such as bat or mat. Monitor for understanding. 4. Hold up another card. Name the picture. Have the child next to you say a word that rhymes with the picture word. Have the child next to that child say a different rhyming word. 5. Continue to go around the circle using the same card, with each child trying to come up with a different word that rhymes with the initial card. Nonsense words are allowed. 6. Once a child cannot come up with a new rhyming word, offer the child a new picture card and begin again. 5 Phonological Awareness Activities Children Everywhere Foster phonological awareness by breaking children s names into syllables. chart paper and markers Write the words to the song Children, Children, Everywhere on chart paper. 1. Gather children together in a circle. Using their names, teach or review how to break words into syllables. Teach or review what a syllable is a small part of a word. Monitor for understanding. 2. Tell the children that you have a song that can be sung to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. Have children hum the tune a few times to become familiar with the melody. 3. Point to the words on the chart as everyone sings the words to the song. 4. Have children take turns saying their names, breaking them into syllables. If a child has trouble doing this, model it. Once everyone has had a turn saying his or her name, sing the song again. Instead of singing the children s names, ask each child to use the name of a parent or sibling, and then repeat slowly, breaking it into syllables. 6 Phonological Awareness Activities Guess My Favorite Foster phonological awareness by engaging children in a game involving rhyming, syllables, and letter-sound associations. index cards pencils large whiteboard with markers and an eraser blue green yellow red orange 1. Choose five to eight words to focus on for this lesson. Think of categories, such as your favorite things, animals, food, colors, games, etc. 2. Write the words on index cards. Over time, develop a collection of cards for different categories. 1. Gather children together and tell them that they are going to guess some of your favorite things. Tell them that they need to listen carefully to the clues that you will give them. Explain that you will give three clues for each favorite item on your list: a letter-sound clue, a syllable clue, and a rhyming clue. 2. Try using the word pizza to begin. Tell children that your favorite food begins with the letter p, and it makes the /p/ sound. Next, tell them that this favorite food has two syllables, and clap twice to demonstrate the syllables. Finally, share that the word rhymes with mizza. 3. Ask children to raise their hands when they think they know what your favorite food might be. (pizza) Once the correct answer is given, record the word on the whiteboard. Have children repeat the word and hop, tap their feet while sitting, or clap the number of syllables. 4. Continue the activity by following the same procedure using other categories. My Favorite Things ice cream pizza Let children take turns choosing a word and giving three clues for that word.
