1 Year 11 Newsletter #everymarkcounts You re now a matter of weeks away from the most important exams in your life so far. I m sure your teachers are telling you this in every single lesson, and every assembly talks about that final push, so you can get the results you deserve! Even if you were disappointed with your mock exams, it really does not matter. The past is in the past. Every year so many students improve by at least two grades between the mock and the actual exams because they learn from their mistakes and start to focus more. I think this quotation sums up our message to you: There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure. Colin Powell, retired American general This newsletter contains some great advice to help with final preparations, as you all aim to reach your full potential. Remember a few marks can be the difference between one grade and another, so it s worth identifying your weaker areas for each subject and making these a real priority for revision #everymarkcounts! 2 #everymarkcounts English GCSE preparation English Pre Public examination The next year 11 pre public exam will take place on March 5nd and will be an English Literature Component 2 paper featuring An Inspector Calls, A Christmas Carol and unseen poetry. We will be running pre-exam briefings on the day of the examination. English is on a Tuesday after school and has recently involved pupils who did not reach their target grade in the previous English Language examination. This will soon broaden out to focus on groups of pupils who struggled with specific questions or skills, before becoming key Language and Literature revision sessions aimed at the whole class. We have started our programme of Walking Talking Mock sessions aimed at larger groups of pupils who underachieved in the English Language examination. Certain pupils will be asked to attend these sessions on either a Tuesday after school or on a Wednesday Week B at 2pm. The sessions will last around an hour and a half and are designed to focus on the timings and techniques required to be successful on the English Language papers. They will usually be run by the Team Leader of English (Mr Ashworth) and the Assistant Head of English i/c of KS4 (Mr Walsh). Revision support All year 11 pupils will be receiving revision materials for each part of the English Language and English Literature examinations. Every year 11 pupil can access the PiXL Literature revision APP using their username (surname and then first name all as one word: PEARCESTUART) and the password which is ROUNDHAYENGLISH1. Pupils are regularly being set homework on the set texts or key skills on Doddle and it is important that this is always completed and pupils aim to get 100%. Examinations The dates for the English GCSEs are as follows: 22 nd May: English Literature Component 1 (Shakespeare and Poetry Anthology) 25 th May: English Literature Component 2 ( An Inspector Calls, A Christmas Carol and unseen poetry) 5 th June: English Language Component 1 (Fiction paper) 8 th June English Language Component 2 (Non Fiction paper) All of the English GCSE exams are in the morning and we will run pre-exam briefings from 8:10am. In addition to this we will also be running two university style Literature lectures aimed at pupils with targets of 6+ and focussing on key set texts. These will also take place on a Wednesday Week B at 2pm. #BeRemarkable

3 #everymarkcounts Maths GCSE preparation Maths Pre Public examination The next year 11 pre public exam will take place on Tuesday March 6th (non calculator paper) periods 1 and 2 and Friday March 9th (calculator paper) periods 1 and 2. The time for each paper is 1 hour 30 minutes. There will be only two papers instead of 3. Pupils should be acting on the topics for development as shown on their Smith Proforma (given to pupils on 5th Jan following the mock exam) in preparation for the March mock examinations and in lessons, all subject content is being reviewed at the moment and all content on this mock will have been covered. Please use Mathswatch, the PIXL APP and Doddle to get access to a wide range of resources to help with revision, Maths is on a Monday or Thursday after school for targeted students. These sessions are running until the mock examinations and will be reviewed after the March mock examinations. For pupils involved in these intervention classes it is compulsory that they attend and texts will be sent home as reminders and also when they do not attend. The intervention will soon broaden out to focus on other groups of pupils. However, for pupils not in compulsory intervention until the March mock, there is a drop in session for Higher pupils on Mondays with Mr Carroll in F26 3pm-4pm and for Foundation pupils on Thursdays with Mr Madarasz in F22 3pm-4pm. 4 Revision support PIXL Maths APP Using the PIXL APP, if pupils go to gap analysis, this will allow pupils to see their Smith Proforma and the APP will then direct them to resources to help with the insecure topics they need to address. The app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store, Google Play Store or the Amazon App Store. Just search the topic or tier of entry and it will filter the required resources. Pupils are regularly being set homework where they are required to complete an exam paper. A different one is issued each Friday to be completed for the following Friday. 5 #everymarkcounts Science GCSE preparation The dates for the Science exams (PPE) are as follows: Biology Wednesday 7 th March Sets 2 5: Set 1: Chemistry Thursday 8 th March Sets 2 5: (Hall) Set 1: (Gym) Physics Monday 12 th March Sets 2 5: Set 1: Triple Exams will be 1 hour 45 minutes long. Trilogy (double science) exams will be 1 hour 15 minutes long. We will be providing revision sessions running up to these PPEs.
