10 PSLE - a placement examination Need to reflect the relative achievement level of pupils among their peers. Places pupils into different courses according to their academic ability Enables posting to secondary schools by merit and as far as possible into a school of their choice.

11 What is PSLE Aggregate Score? It is a sum of scores. What are these scores? Are they raw scores?

12 The PSLE Aggregate Score incorporates performances of pupils in all 4 subjects allows pupils to be ranked fairly

13 Can raw scores be used? NO!

14 Why not? Different subjects have different levels of difficulty The spread of marks from the average mark differs across subjects (spread = standard deviation)

19 EL 85% T-Score MT 85% ave = 60 ave = T-Score converts average mark of each subject to a common score of 50 points. It also converts other marks taking into consideration the extent to which they differ from the average and the size of spread of the marks around the average

20 What is T-Score? It gives the relative position of a pupil s performance as compared to the performance of all the other pupils in that subject. The raw mark obtained in the exam only shows how good the pupil is in that subject, not how good he is as compared to others.

21 How is T-Score calculated for each subject? (X - Y) T = Z where X: pupil s mark for the subject Y: average mark (mean) scored by all pupils Z: spread of marks around the average mark (standard deviation)

23 How is the Aggregate Score calculated? By adding the T-Scores of the 4 subjects

35 (3) S1 Posting Exercise PSLE students (Non-DSA) and Unsuccessful DSA candidates will participate in S1 Posting Exercise to opt for secondary schools S1 Option is from 7 calendar days after release of PSLE results (including Sat & Sun) if submit online OR 5 working days after release of PSLE results (excluding Sat & Sun) if submit via school Take note of the important dates and assign proxy if you are not in Singapore during the exercise.

36 Course Option for borderline cases Option Bands Students in the E/NA or NA/NT Bands are allowed to indicate the course of preference Students who are in option bands must indicate a course of preference in the option form.

37 (2) Direct School Admission (DSA) First introduced in 2004 To promote holistic education by giving the participating schools greater flexibility in selecting students via their own selection criteria which can include diverse academic and non-academic achievements and talents. Own criteria by schools contact schools or visit their websites Refer to MOE website for actual dates, list of participating schools and application procedure

38 Pre-Selection Stage Read through the information note issued by the school Go to the DSA-Sec website to check on the profile of the participating schools and their admission criteria. Consider carefully child s strengths and select schools that best meet your needs. Do take note of the school s selection exercises which may incorporate tests, trials or interviews according to their published selection criteria. You could approach the school directly for further clarifications.

39 Selection and Exercise School Preference Stage Secondary school will select students based on their own admission criteria. Secondary schools will also issue letters informing applicants whether they have been given Confirmed Offer, placed on Waiting or Rejected. Those with a Confirmed Offer or on the Waiting List will be issued with School Preference Form which will consolidate all the offers you have received from the various schools. Once given a Confirmed Offer, you are guaranteed a place provided the school offers a course which you are eligible for.

40 DSA Allocation and Release of results Pupil Placement Section (MOE) will allocate students to the respective Secondary schools, based on the student choices and secondary schools ranking. DSA results were released together with PSLE results Successful DSA candidates: - S1 Option Form for application of Foreign Languages/Elective Programmes/Course Options Unsuccessful DSA candidates who did not need the intake requirement: - S1 Option Form to participate in S1 Posting Exercise Unsuccessful DSA candidates who are not promoted to the Sec Schools: - A letter to inform them on the outcome.

If there are extenuating circumstance, they will allow the child to explain what happened and adjust their response accordingly

52 How does Authoritative Parenting help your child? Authoritative parents act as role models children are able to internalise these behaviour and exhibit them. They exhibit good emotional understanding and control. Consistent rules and discipline also allow children to know what to expect. When children are able to act independently, they learn that they are capable of accomplishing things on their own, helping to foster strong self-esteem and self-confidence.

53 Common Observations of Raising Successful Kids Lythcott-Haims believes kids raised on chores go on to become employees who collaborate well with their coworkers, are more empathetic because they know firsthand what struggling looks like, and are able to take on tasks independently. At the core is a distinction in the way you assume your will affects your ability, and it has a powerful effect on kids. If kids are told that they aced a test because of their innate intelligence, that creates a "fixed" mindset. If they succeeded because of effort, that teaches a "growth" mindset. The finding came out in standardized tests: 57% of the kids who did the worst were expected to attend college by their parents, while 96% of the kids who did the best were expected to go to college.

54 Common Observations of Raising Successful Kids A 2014 study of 243 people born into poverty found that children who received "sensitive caregiving" in their first three years not only did better in academic tests in childhood, but had healthier relationships and greater academic attainment in their 30s. "Mothers' stress, especially when mothers are stressed because of the juggling with work and trying to find time with kids, that may actually be affecting their kids poorly," study coauthor and Bowling Green State University sociologist Kei Nomaguchi told The Post.

55 Common Observations of Raising Successful Kids Not allowing children to make their own decisions, invading their privacy, fostering dependence, and guilting children into doing what they want are all examples of how a parent might apply psychological control. Whereas psychological control is about trying to control a child's emotional state or beliefs, Haden points out that behavioral control is different in that it's about setting limits on behavior that could be harmful. Examples of behavioral control include setting curfews, assigning chores, and expecting homework to be completed.
