2 About the SARC Every school in California is required by state law to publish a School Accountability Report Card (SARC), by February 1 of each year. The SARC contains information about the condition and performance of each California public school. Under the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) all local educational agencies (LEAs) are required to prepare a Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP), which describes how they intend to meet annual school-specific goals for all pupils, with specific activities to address state and local priorities. Additionally, data reported in an LCAP is to be consistent with data reported in the SARC. Across the bay from San Francisco and just south of the city of Oakland, Castro Valley is a growing and a richly diverse community with neighborly appeal. Independent Elementary School was built in All of the playing fields at Independent Elementary have been renovated and the playground and equipment in the kindergarten area have been updated. A new retaining wall has created a natural amphitheater in which performances and school assemblies are enjoyed. Mechanical ventilation has been added to seven classrooms. The custodial/grounds staff of two maintains clean and safe facilities. District maintenance staff ensures that the repairs necessary to keep the school in good repair and working order are completed in a timely manner. A work order process is used to ensure efficient service and that emergency repairs are given the highest priority. Engagement State Priority: Parental Involvement The SARC provides the following information relevant to the Parental Involvement State Priority (Priority 3): Efforts the school district makes to seek parent input in making decisions for the school district and each schoolsite. Opportunities for Parental Involvement Parents and the community are very supportive of the educational programs at Independent Elementary. The Parent Teachers Association plays an active role in the community and the school through fund-raising, classroom docents, and special activities. Specific opportunities for parental involvement include: School Site Council Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Classroom Volunteer FAME Docent Music for Minor Docent Field trip volunteer Parking lot supervision PEP Playground supervision State Priority: School Climate The SARC provides the following information relevant to the School Climate State Priority (Priority 6): Pupil suspension rates; Pupil expulsion rates; and Other local measures on the sense of safety. School Safety Plan To ensure students safety, teachers supervise students on campus before and after school and during recess, and noon duty supervisors monitor students during lunchtime. All visitors must sign in at the school s office and receive proper authorization to be at the school. Visitors are asked by the school site staff to display their pass at all times. Independent Elementary School s Safety Plan is revised annually each fall by the Site Safety Committee, which is comprised of the principal, parents, and members of the teaching staff. Key elements to the safety plan include detailed secure campus and evacuation procedures and a schedule for replenishing the school s emergency supplies by the PTA. Emergency drills are held on a regular basis, fire drills are conducted once a month; earthquake and secure campus drills are held each semester; a campus evacuation drill is scheduled each year.
