2 National Standards Overview for Parents, Families and Whanau As from 2010, schools with children in Years 1-8 have been using National Standards. The standards describe the achievement in reading, writing and mathematics that will enable to meet the requirements of the New Zealand Curriculum. From 2011, schools with Maori-medium settings working towards implementing Te Marautanga o Aotearoa will be required to use Nga Whanaketanga Rumaki Maori. Reporting to you in plain language is an important part of the National Standards. You can expect to receive written reporting twice a year. Included with the report will be your child s student portfolio. The student portfolio contains learning goals, progress charts and formal assessments. Understanding your child s report with the student portfolio: National Standards are benchmarks of student achievement and teachers are required to use a range of assessment data and approaches to make an Overall Teacher Judgment (OTJ) about each student s learning progress and achievement The Tracking Progress charts for reading, writing and mathematics highlight your child s progress and achievement as Above National Standard, Within National Standard, Up to One Year Below National Standard and Two or More Years Below National Standard Reporting Timeline: The Mid-year Report will be presented to you at your student s achievement discussion along with a portfolio of your student s work, at the end of Term 2. Opportunity to provide Feedback: We welcome your feedback using the online feedback form. You can access this form on your child s blog under their portfolio page.

Demonstrates control and independence in selecting writing processes and strategies, and the range of texts they write Confidently and deliberately chooses the most appropriate processes and strategies for writing in different learning areas.
