1 Newsletter Term 4 - Week 9, December 8th 2017 Curious, Confident, Connected Achieving Excellence From the Principal Team Dear Families, The school year is fast coming to a close. Our students are still actively engaged in their learning and are continuing to learn and thrive at this busy time of the year. Next Tuesday is our Meet the Teacher day when our F - Grade 5 students will meet their 2018 home group teacher, classmates and new learning community. The students will spend two sessions with their new class prior to the end of the year. We ask that you support your child s transition by positively promoting the new and exciting school experiences and opportunities that 2018 will bring. Swimming Program Today sees the culmination of our F-6 Swimming Program. The program has been a huge success with strong student involvement and terrific parent support. We would like to thank Nick for his fabulous organisation of the swimming program as you can imagine, the logistics of moving 21 classes to and from the Hawthorn Aquatic Centre in a timely manner is complex. Outside Provider Programs At Hawthorn West we are pleased to be able to offer our students the opportunity to be involved a range of programs offered by outside providers. This year students have been involved in ABC Music, Chess Club, Junior Engineers, Mandarin Lessons, Smart Art, Tennis and Violin. From the start of 2018 school year, all Outside Provider programs will be conducted either before or after school depending on the spaces required and their availability. Student Learning Justine, Daniel and I are currently reading the end of year reports for our students. We are excited by the academic, social and emotional growth our students have made this year and this is clearly reflected in their reports. We would like to thank our teachers for providing our students with a rich learning program and for preparing them well for the next stage of their learning journey. We would also like to acknowledge staff for the detailed reports they have written which highlight individual successes and identify future learning pathways for each child. This is a great opportunity for you as a family to celebrate your child s learning for 2017 with them. Student reports will be available on Compass on Tuesday 19th December. Multi Genre Celebration This term the focus for our whole school writing program has been our Multi- Genre projects. A Multi- Genre project is a collection of writing pieces, written in different genres and text forms, but all around a single theme or topic. It enables students to demonstrate their knowledge of different text types as they explore a topic that they are passionate about. It s been wonderful to see our students across the school so engaged and thinking creatively about how to write varying genres about the same topic to suit different purposes. Some of the topics being explored across the school include: Super Heroes, Henry, Greek Mythology, Tennis, Education across the World, Harry Potter, Chocolate, American Civil War. We would like to invite parents, guardians and special friends to visit our classrooms next Wednesday 13 th December to enjoy the finished Multi- Genre Projects and celebrate the amazing writing our students have been doing. We will be seeing Wonder (rated PG) at 12:00pm. The students will have an early lunch in the food court. We will be walking from HWPS and head along the river. The cost of the excursion includes the movie ticket & a small popcorn and drink for each student along with a maximum of $15 dollars to buy lunch if they choose. Grade 6 Luna Park excursion: (Compass, closes Monday 18th December) As is tradition at HWPS, Grade 6 students are invited to attend a fun filled day at Luna Park. The Grade 6 students have had some amazing experiences and built strong friendships during their 7 years of Primary School and Luna Park is a chance to celebrate and say goodbye as they transition to Secondary School in This excursion includes 4 hours of ride enjoyment from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Students will need to bring their own lunch for the day. Grade 6 Graduation: (Compass for student tickets, closes Friday 8th December) On Thursday 14 th of December our Grade 6 students are graduating. Graduation is a wonderful time to celebrate the successes and achievements that our children have had at Hawthorn West Primary School. Due to our large number of students graduating this year the night will be held at Melbourne Girls College. Students and guests will be welcomed to the Gillard Centre at M.G.C from 5:30pm onwards, to take photo and mingle amongst friends. At 6:00pm students and teachers will sit down for dinner. At 7:00pm the doors will open to the M.G.C Auditorium and guests will be seated for the Graduation Ceremony. After the ceremony the students will stay and dance the night away at the disco. The night will conclude at approximately 9:45pm (prompt pick up would be appreciated) Guest tickets: (ticket sales close 3:30pm Friday 8th December)

If you would like to donate a gift, you can place it under the Christmas tree near the school office. Please make sure that all presents are left unwrapped. Last Call for Donations This year, The JSC will be asking for donations to give to the Smith Family Christmas Appeal. This appeal helps those less fortunate, so they can All donations will be greatly accepted. Thank you, the JSC.
