9 Why introduce Subject-Based Banding? We recognise different abilities... and help each student to proceed at a pace that he can manage. Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam Former Minister for Education

10 Previous System (before 2008) Students who did not perform well in the Primary 4 examinations would be Streamed into EM3 classes in P5 and P6 Took all subjects at the foundation level Might be offered Mother Tongue Language (MTL) (ML / CL / TL) at the standard level if they were strong in the MTL 10 10

11 Why introduce SBB? Recognise the different abilities of students Provide more flexibility in subject combinations for students with strengths and abilities that vary across subjects Offer stronger subjects at standard level and weaker subjects at foundation level Removal of EM1, EM2 and EM3 streams in Primary 5 and 6 11

12 What does SBB mean for your child? There will be greater flexibility in subject combinations Your child has the choice to take a combination of standard and foundation subjects, depending on his strengths 12

13 Recommendation Criteria Passes all 4 subjects and performs very well in Mother Tongue Language (85%) EL, Maths and Science (80% and above) Offer 4 Standard subjects + Higher Mother Tongue Language 2018: Higher Chinese Language Students in the top 30% of the PSLE cohort who take Higher Chinese Language will be given bonus points for admission to SAP schools 13 Distinction 3, Merit 2 and Pass 1

16 How does SBB Work? School recommends subject combination, based on P4 End of Year Exam results. Parents indicate preferred combination. [At P4] [At P5] Student takes subject combination determined by the school with inputs from the parents. 16

[End of P5] Student who takes 1 or more foundation subject(s) and does very well in them School may allow him to upgrade 1 or 2 subjects to standard level if school believes he can cope; or continue the same subject combination in P6 Student who takes standard subjects and has difficulty coping School may allow him to take 1 or more subjects at foundation level in P6 All other students School will allow them to continue the same subject combination in P6 20

22 Subject-based Banding and Secondary School admission Progression to secondary level depends on PSLE Score. The scoring system is not new Different expectations of standard and foundation subjects will be taken into account when the PSLE score is calculated Offering weaker subjects at foundation level is not a disadvantage. Your child will be able to focus on building up strong fundamentals in the weaker subjects (E.g. weak in MTL) 22 22

23 How will PSLE scores be calculated? The PSLE scoring system remains unchanged The raw mark for each subject is converted to a transformed score (T-score) The T-score reflects the students standing relative to other students on a common scale The Aggregate Score is the sum of the T- score in all subjects Each subject carries equal weighting 23

24 Aggregate Score = Sum of T-Scores of 4 subjects T-Score Mark obtained in PSLE T-Score = Relative position of a student s performance compared to all other students in that subject 24

25 The following formula is applied: Where T = (X - Y) Z X = student s mark for the subject Y = Average mark scored by all students Z = Spread of marks around the average mark (standard deviation) 25
